Makes your dumb meter smart! Impressive product with equally impressive support
Let's get into it...WHY DID I BUY THIS? Leak detection. Ok, and I am a nerd and I’d make a shovel into a connected smart shovel if I could. Second to that, I do appreciate having a better idea of our water usage.HOW DOES THIS MAGIC HAPPEN?When water flows through a household water meter, a magnetic disc spins inside of the meter, which correlates directly to a water flow rate. The Flume sensor measures the magnetic field from the meter and sends the information to an app via a Flume bridge. (I stole this explanation from the web).YOU’RE WONDERING IF YOU CAN INSTALL THIS THING?You can. For some reason, I thought it had to be complicated. I went to their website, watched videos, read. I went outside in 110 degree heat and looked at my water meter. There was already a wire connected to it. I wondered if that was going to be a problem. I chatted with Flume support online and sent them photos of my meter. I asked about the wire. They assured me it’s all good. So, I pulled the trigger and ordered. (Photo of my meter shows that cable wrapping around half of if you want to compare with yours)IT ARRIVES.The packaging is perfection. It’s up there with the Nest thermostat. I mean – you not only get a little tool to take the plate off your water meter, they include a set of latex gloves. QuickStart card. I didn’t think something that I am going to stick into a dirty hole in my yard would come packaged so nicely.IT IS SILLY EASY TO INSTALL THE DEVICE ON YOUR WATER METERSo, you see all those photos of dirty holes, meters, and a box strapped to them? That’s it. Don’t complicate it. You basically use their industrial-size rubber band that is already attached to the water sensor box to strap it to the side of the meter. You don’t even need a lot of strength to stretch it. The box just sort of sets there. You almost feel like you should be doing something more.THE “BEACON” (aka The Bridge)Flume calls the little device that receives signals from the water sensor the “bridge.” I keep calling it a beacon, probably because of its shape and size. It’s like a small soda can (see photos). Technically, it’s a bridge – it bridges the connection from the water sensor to the Flume servers. My beacon (err, bridge) is roughly 40 feet from the water sensor with two walls in between. I think Flume says it can be quite a bit further. I have never had a signal issue.Note: The bridge/beacon has a little wire coming out of it, likely an antenna. I thought something was wrong with it but Flume assured me it’s normal.SETUPI’m not going to go into major details here, but their app walks you through the setup. I did hit a snag, but it had to do with my firewall. All me. Not Flume. It’s a modern setup app like ones from Ring, Rachio, Google, etc. Step by step.THE APPThe app is clean and not too complicated. It works well. It has a few quirks but I am satisfied that it provides what I would expect this device to deliver (except instant feedback – see below). You can set up usage alerts indicating how many gallons over what period of time triggers a notification. You can get a text, a push notification, or both. You can also set up your water budget for the day which is a pretty cool way to see how you did every day.I didn't post any phone app screenshots because I see there are already plenty.!!! HELPFUL TIP !!! After you install this, you must give yourself some time to get a feel for how water is used in your home in order to set up effective alerts and budgets. Maybe you have a sense of how many gallons of water your dishwasher or pool filler uses, but I didn’t. So, I set very conservative usage alerts and kept getting notified about water use. It was annoying. I had to fine-tune my usage alerts to get to where I wanted them. It’s completely customizable.THE WEB INTERFACEAs I post this, I don’t see any pictures of the web interface so I'll post some. The web interface is actually pretty awesome. You can see all your data on a big screen. It does everything the app does and adds additional functionality like being able to view usage between specific dates. To me, that’s key when it comes to comparing to your actual water bill. I’ve included some screenshots of the web interface. They label the web interface as an “alpha” product but it seems to work quite well.MY WEB SCREENSHOTS: The notifications in the lower-right of the screenshot: (1) My daily budget report, (2) the second usage alert was my main irrigation running, (3) the third leak alert was a hose I was running to slow water a plant so I consider that alert PERFECT because it could have been something I didn’t intend to leave on.NOTE: I removed my name and address from the left column under “Welcome.” Yours would appear there.*** WHY NOT 5 STARS?I can’t get there yet. To put my rating in perspective. I give Nest (cameras and speakers), Hue, and SmartThings a 4-star rating. Ecobee and Wyze have tipped into my 5-star space. Ok, SmartThings barely gets that 4.-- IRRIGATION: This is one important thing the Flume can’t do yet. It can’t discern irrigation activity from a leak. I know for a fact that this is something they are working on because I asked. There has already been one update that points to work in that direction. As it stands, when my irrigation runs for 2 hours in the morning, I get Flume usage alerts. Since I am an uber-nerd, my irrigation is handled by a Rachio connected controller. I get the Flume usage alerts and the Rachio irrigation notifications around the same time, so I don’t panic. When they can iron this out, it will make the leak detection functionality of the Flume more powerful and reliable. I am already seeing mention of irrigation in some alerts. I think they will get it worked out.-- NOT EXACTLY REAL-TIME: The product title indicates it tracks water use in “real-time.” Not quite. It did surprise me that there is up to a one-minute delay between water off/on and the water status indicator responding. That doesn’t match my definition of real-time. However, they are upfront about it in the app and it even tells you how to refresh on the fly. Having used the Flume for several weeks now, I don’t think this seriously damages its functionality. It just surprised me. It works well even with the slight delay.*** BOTTOM LINE ***This works. You can install it yourself. Customer support is AMAZING. I am confident this will only get better given how much the support team is interested in helping. As I said, I have already seen one app update too. If you like the idea of water monitoring, go for it.

I was a little concerned when attaching it to the water meter as the brass base is much wider then the grey meter and all of Flume's install pictures show them being the same side, but at an angle straddling the two it still works just fine. Super easy to install and the app is straight forward to use.

One issue is you can't properly add a Canadian address when registering the product though in the end it didn't stop setting it up.

One nice thing the app could use is the ability to quickly select some water usage within the graphs it provides to do a quick tally of your water usage selection, vs adding it up manually.

It sows time of day and amount of water used . This helps you to know when and how much water was used. You can also set up a budget and when you get close to the total amount water used, daily, weekly, monthly, depending on how you set up your budget, flume will notify you. It will also notify you if there is a leak that runs over 2 hours.
