The tragic spiral of a once-great smart home platform into oblivion...

The tragic spiral of a once-great smart home platform into oblivion...
Until recently, I would have easily given this device a 5-star review. This smart home hub used to be my go-to when asked for advice in home automation providers. Until recently, I had a fair amount of confidence and trust in this brand and platform. Then something happened. After years of wonderful service, this once-stellar product, which initially was branded on the very packaging of their devices as a product that markets itself as subscription-free, dropped a bombshell on each and every customer they serviced.Begin to shell out $5/month for a new mandatory subscription service, or have your purchased device become basically a brick with zero functionality. With the click of an email sent, *en masse*, to their entire user base, wink ultimately held your entire smart home functionality hostage. Pay, and it will continue to work. Opt-out, and your smart home becomes brainless. On top of this, the window of time that they gave as a grace period before crippling non-paying devices, was so incredibly sudden. It was such a callous and unprecedented mandate from a company I’ve been using for years now. I’ve purchased multiple hubs, referred considerable business their way over the many years I’ve been a customer, and that accounted for absolutely zero consideration in their ransom request blanket business model shift. And now the kicker: within the first month or so of being required to pay them for use of the device I already purchased under different terms, after billing tens of thousands of subscribers for the service they used to rely on fee-free, their entire service has shut down in a now unprecedented, multi-day critical service outage which has left every single one of their now forced fee-paying customers without ANY functionality from their hubs. After years of loyal patronage, I will be ditching this device asap and purchasing one of many competitor brands who remain fee-free and customer-focused. At this point, listing this item on any sort of auction site is useless, as the most recent sales i’ve observed of this device being sold is literally less than the cost it would take to ship it. Complete and total devaluation at their own hands.BEWARE investing a cent in this sinking ship.
