I bought this system to replace the ADT system I had for years. This system along with four Contact Sensors replaced what I had from ADT. The cost of the Ring system and year of monitoring was less than six months of monitoring from ADT. The system comes packaged nice a secure, which I am thankful for since the deliver person wasn't gentle dropping the box on my porch. I had downloaded the app and registered before the system arrived, so that part was taken care of. The included instructions and phone app walk you through the setup. It was painless and completed in about 10 minutes. I set up everything on my dining room table to go through the registration process. Once done, I installed the components where the old hardware was. Ring includes everything you need to mount (double sided tape and/or screws) all the components. Registering for monitoring was very simple too. One thing I learned that I want to pass on. do not remove the little battery tabs until the app tells you to. If you do, just open the cover, pull the battery and reinstall the tab. Just pulling the battery and reinstalling it doesn't reset the device.
The app could use some tweaks to let you customize your notifications a little more and tweak the contact choices, but overall I'm satisfied.
I was looking at the Nest system, but this is a better value, you get a separate keyboard so you can semi hide the main base station that has the cellular radio and battery backup. You also have the choice of hardwired or wireless 2.4 - 5 ghz network connections.

I've had the ring system for six months now. I paid for the years subscription to their monitoring service. I've had one activation, by me, to test and see what the monitoring center does. I live in a city that does not respond to unverified burglar alarm activations. I was contacted within minutes of my alarm going off, which was about the same amount of time ADT took. Overall, I'm happy with this service, especially at this price point.
The system itself has performed flawlessly. I've had a few internet outages and the system promptly moved to cell coverage. I have the keypad mounted in a utility room we normally enter when entering the house. It has run off of its internal battery and I charged it once since installing it. I have a total of five door senors and the motion, which all have performed as expected. I have added a Ring Pro doorbell and have connected it to activate if the alarm is tripped. Overall, the hardware has held up as expected and I am very pleased.
The software/app has constantly been updated by Ring, adding tweaks to improve the performance of the system. It is so nice to just look at the app and see that everything is okay at home. I will, over time, be replacing my hardwired video surveillance system with Ring cameras.
After having ADT for 17+ years and feeling their customer service and pricing became ridiculous, I am pleased with this Ring system. Even if Ring raises their monitoring fees, which I hope they don't, I can still self monitor and feel secure in leaving my house knowing I will be notified if something happens.

Hands Down, The Best Home Security System Available!
I bought the 8-Piece Kit that included a free 3rd Gen Echo Dot when it was on sale with a Prime Member discount. This "8-Piece Kit" was shipped packaged as a 5-Piece Kit, a separately packaged 2-Pack Door/Window Sensors, and another separately packaged Motion Sensor. I don't particularly care one way or the other...I just thought it was interesting that it shipped that way...perhaps Amazon's way of clearing out the less desirable 5-Piece Kits.The Ring Alarm system is excellent in several ways:#1 All items included in the 5-Piece Kit were already tied to the Base Station, allowing you to simply pull the battery tabs for automatic pairing. Those of us who are experienced Smartthings owners know how difficult the pairing process can sometimes be with new devices.#2 The extra sensors paired with a simple QR scan of the code on the back of the sensor from within the Ring app.#3 The Motion Sensor's corner mounting solution is simply spectacular! You can choose to simply stick the Motion Sensor mount into the corner with the included double sided sticky tape OR you have 4 countersunk holes in the angled sides of the mount to use for corner mounting with drywall screws. The simplistic thoughtful engineering of this mount is wonderful!#4 The Base Station is everything that I had hoped to transform my Smartthings system into...battery backup, cellular backup, etc. I have been using my Smartthings setup for non-monitored home security for nearly 3 years. While it works great in many ways, I have never found an acceptably priced cellular backup for when the power/Internet goes out. Having a 24 hour built-in battery backup and free cellular backup with the Ring Protect Plus plan is an awesome feature!#5 Still Base Station related, but the built in 104dB siren is nice and loud, and doesn't need it's own separate power source, unlike my Smartthings siren...yet another item that I purchased separately for Smartthings, which requires its own batteries.#6 The Keypad is designed and built quite well. The keypad is fully rechargeable with the included USB AC Adapter and Micro USB Cable. The keypad has it's own speaker, though I don't suggest setting its volume to 100% due to a bit of distortion. The buttons and current mode all light up any time you pass by whenever you disable "Power Save Mode" in the Ring app. The mount for the keypad can be used to mount it on the wall or flipped over to use it as a table stand. Again, Ring has actually thought about and taken time to engineer a functional and useful mounting solution for another one of their products.#7 The Ring Alarm is compatible out of the box with the First Alert Z-Wave Smoke/CO Detector that I already owned for my Smartthings system! I simply Excluded my Smoke/CO Detector from Smartthings and paired it to my Ring Alarm. Within 1-2 minutes, I received an email from Ring thanking me for adding Fire and CO detection to my Ring Alarm and informing me that I didn't need to acquire any permits for fire monitoring.#8 Though #1-#7 are all great reasons to pick up the Ring Alarm, the Ring Protect Plus plan coming in at a minuscule $10/month or $100/year easily takes the cake as one of the best features of the Ring Alarm! However, and I want to be crystal clear, without the exceptional level of engineering that has gone into the Ring Alarm, the Ring Protect Plus plan would lack any appeal for me. The fact that you get 24/7 professional monitoring, unlimited Ring Camera cloud backup, and extended warranties on all your Ring products make the $100/year price for Ring Protect Plus an absolute steal!What do I not like about the Ring Alarm system?#1 The only engineering fail that I've found thus far is the double sided sticky tape mounting bracket for the Door/Window Sensors. The bracket needs to be attached to the sensor for proper placement on a door. After ensuring proper placement, I remove the Sensor from the door to really press down on the small mounting bracket to ensure a secure installation. While removing the Sensor from the door it is very easy to bend the "locking tab" used to keep the Sensor from being knocked off of the mount during regular use. It's simply a plastic friction tab going into a hole on the back of the sensor...and it's just too thin. I bent the tab on 2 of 3 Sensor installations, but was able to "repair" it with needle nose pliers. The back side of the Door/Window Sensors, which contains screw holes as an alternative mount, should simply be flat, rather than recessed, allowing the Sensor to attach directly to the door with the included double sided sticky tape.#2 The Ring Alarm includes Zigbee, Z-Wave, WiFi, Ethernet and Bluetooth! However, it is not yet the Smartthings KILLER that they are clearly grooming it to be. Please, oh please, spend the time and effort necessary to make more Z-Wave and Zigbee products compatible with Ring Alarm!!! I would love to see all of my interior light turn on and my exterior lights flash any time the Ring Alarm were to be triggered.#3 There is currently no geofence option to Arm/Disarm Ring based on the presence of, for example, your cellphone. While I enjoy this feature on Smartthings, we frequently get to the door at the house and need to wait for Smartthings to realize we're home or we have to open the Smartthings app to tell it we're home. I would love to at least see Ring offer this as an option...preferably implemented a bit better than Smartthings.Overall, I have one suggestion...BUY THE RING ALARM! If you want an easy to setup DIY wireless alarm system at a dirt cheap equipment and subscription cost, you are simply wasting your time to look elsewhere! I'll also be picking up the Ring Doorbell Camera ASAP to enjoy some basically free cloud backup!This system was bought with my own money. I haven't been paid or coerced to write this review. This is probably the longest Amazon review I've ever written. However, the Ring Alarm just fires me up and I hope this review has fired you up too!God Bless!
