I have a flowering pink dogwood tree in front of the living room window up north, but each year when we got up there it had already blossomed. I wanted to be able to see the tree in bloom, and all the other early season flowers that come up around it. This was one of the main reasons I wanted an exterior camera. (also just to check on the outside of the property in general.)
I did some googling and checked reviews on Amazon and came upon the Reolink Argus Pro. It seemed to be a perfect fit. I ordered it and the solar panel since would be gone for months at a time and not able to charge the battery.
The camera and solar panel arrived and were so easy to set up. I mean *really* easy! I downloaded the app on my iPhone and just followed directions. Within five minutes the camera was functioning. I popped in a 16 GB micro SD card and I had my husband install the camera outside our living room window while I looked on the app to make sure I could see everything I wanted to see. We played around with different settings for a while, deciding to allow push notifications but not emails. The push notifications were enough. If you set the app to send emails of alerts, you get a nice snapshot along with the email.
The solar panel keeps the camera charged between 98 and 100% at all times. That too was very easy to install and mount.
Setting up the Reolink client on my laptop was a little more tricky, because the instructions aren't really as clear as they could be. For the Argus Pro, you have to enter the UID number, not the IP address. Then, you leave "admin" as the username, but you use the password you set up for your camera as password. A little non-intuitive but with help from customer support I got it. Customer support is only online, but they are very patient and responsive. Remember they're in a different time zone so you'll hear back from them the day after you email them. Be patient. They *will* get back to you!
Our son was over and saw us install the camera and promptly went to Amazon and ordered one for his place. He loves it too. We then ordered a second one for our other place. We installed that one yesterday and added it to the app (very easy) and to the Reolink Client on the laptop.
The photo I've attached in the view of both cameras in the Reolink app on the laptop. It's just so cool!
The two year warranty is another good selling point.
This is really a great little camera. The phone and PC apps are really well thought out and the company is very responsive. I highly recommend!
Get the micro SD card. It's only five bucks and change for a Kingston 16 GB card here on Amazon. Get the solar panel if you don't want to charge the battery every now and then. Both are worth the extra money.

These are Peer 2 Peer cameras. That's what makes them so incredibly simple to setup and use. Unfortunately, there is a downside to P2P technology in that there are slight potential for security risks to your home network should a hacker gain access to your camera. The P2P setup punches a hole thru your firewall and opens a port which could potentially be exploited. Having a strong password for your camera goes a long way towards strong security but it isn't 100%.
Two security risks exist. First, the obvious is that if someone hacks in, they can view what your camera sees. Depending on what you're monitoring, that may or may not be the worst thing in the world. Secondly however is the potential for a hacker to gain access to the code in your camera, reprogram it and turn it into a bot on your network to do great harm. That potential certainly exists for all P2P cameras. How vulnerable each system is will be completely unknown to us consumers.
Not trying to scare anyone away from P2P cameras, just be informed and do a little research on how these things work. Many professionals who install cameras for a living absolutely recommend you do not use them due to the security risks and there have been cases of hijacked P2P cameras in sensitive installations. Of course their warnings need to be taken in the context of their business interests.
All in all, picture quality is very good and you can select 1080p, 720p or a lower rez mode called 'fluent' which is still very functional for quick basic viewing and only uses about 200Kb per second of bandwidth which is great for weaker wifi signals, cameras far from the router or if you've been ratcheted down to 3G speeds. 135 degree lens gives you a wide viewing angle. Night vision is good. Camera stays off until you open the app on your smartphone at which point the camera will stay on for live viewing, snapshots or video grabs. When you turn your smartphone screen off, the camera turns off immediately in response. This is cool and excellent predictable behavior.
You can set up motion detection sensitivity, low-mid-high and the amount of recording time once motion is detected. Recordings are stored on the micro sim card and can be pulled up at anytime. With the Windows client open, you can take snapshots or recordings and they are saved directly to your PC's hard drive.
And the best for last.... NO WIRES. Seriously wireless. I have one in a flower bed right now and they are pretty waterproof with the rubber sleeve. Looks like you can easily get a month out of a full battery charge if there is not a lot of motion recording. I'll probably add the solar panel for some applications.
It's not a perfect system, but if you are sick and tired of buying a new piece of technology, jacking around with it for hours or days, googling endlessly to figure out how to get the thing to work, becoming a short term expert on the thing only to forget almost everything you've learned in 6 months when the thing quits working and you need to troubleshoot it, this is the camera for you.
