Connect the Philips Hue motion sensor to your Philips Hue bridge via the Philips Hue app, and it will automatically turn on your Philips Hue lights when you enter a room. Perfect for your hallway, bathroom, basement or garage. You can choose in the app which scene or light setting should be triggered when motion is detected. The lights will turn off automatically, when motion is no longer detected. |
Day and Night SettingsAutomatically turns on a gentle night light. It's possible to set different light settings for day and night. During the day, the sensor can trigger crisp white light to help you see better. At night, it can turn on a gentle night light when you, your partner or child gets out of bed. Just enough to help you navigate in the dark, without waking up the rest of the family. |

The Hue Motion sensor does exactly what it was marketed to do, and it does its job surprisingly well. The installation was a breeze, setup was easy, and after getting used to its capabilities and limitations for a day or two, it was surprisingly easy to setup the behavior exactly as the way you like it. My lights in each room turn on instantaneously when I walk in, and shut off after a predefined amount of inactivity. It’s highly flexible too, as a piece of strong magnet simply attaches to the back (screw is optional) and sticks to all metal surfaces and some wall corners with metal beams. My favorite location to place the sensor is right over the top screw of my light switch, and it provides the best FOV for the sensor in multiple locations of my home. This kind of setup/function experience cannot be said for a significant portion of the smart home market, even Apple’s own HomeKit is significantly less reliable compared to this product.
If you love it so much why give it 3 stars? Well, as much as I love how the sensors automate my lights in each room, that is literally all it is able to do. With how far smart home technologies have come and the sheer number of tools at the manufactures’ disposal, one does not simply release a premium-priced product without offering a hint of these functionalities. The Hue Sensor is akin to releasing a high-end TV without Netflix integration in the modern age. So if you would like to use your Hue Sensor to trigger notifications to your phone, or complete a series of home automation actions, you’d be better off looking elsewhere.
Am I keeping the Hue Sensors I’ve purchased? Probably, as it helped realized a long time dream of mine while being able to function flawlessly. Am I happy about this purchase? Not really, as the super-limited capabilities at such a steep price point is not at all justified. The advice here is to keep waiting if you are looking for the best bang for your buck.
2 Year Edit: Almost 2 years later, I am revising my review from 3 stars to 5 stars. Most of the above concerns were completely eliminated by the integration of HomeKit, which fixed all of my previous grips!
I set up one of these in the bathroom and one in my home office. In the bathroom, I have the sensor paired with two lights and have set the ambient light sensor and motion detection high. The lights do not come on during the day when not needed but when the ambient light is low, the lights come on full brightness. At night, the lights are set to 5% brightness (nightlight) and turn on to 50% when motion is detected. In the home office, the lights are set to full white during the day and a dim amber at night only when I am present.
My only complaint is the price. $35 seems quite high (even for Hue). I bought two at full price but I keep checking for a sale so I can add a third.

The base mounts on the surface of your choice, and the sensor connects to it magnetically. The base is small, cylindrical, (and magnetic) and has a screw hole in the middle. Screws are inckuded. The base also has a silicon backing on the side that faces away from the sensor, so using it magnetically will not scratch or mar the surface it touches. It can be attached to a metal surface magnetically (I have mine stuck to the metal wall switch plate that manually controls the light that this sensor now controls). The sensor has a concave surface on the side that faces the base, and magnetically attaches to the base. That rounded nub means that the sensor can be can be pivoted and positioned (pointed) exactly where it's needed. The sensor has excellent range. I use this sensor in my garage to turn on/off the overhead light. Using the app, it can be configured to use a different brightness (bright, dim, nightlight, or no action at all) depending on the time of day. The duration the light stays on is programmable, and two features I really like the most are: The controlled light(s) dims to give you a warning that the switch is about to so turn off the light(s), so you can trigger it back with a simple gesture lke waving an arm. It brighten the light and reset the shutoff timer (My previous X10 switch would simply shut off, leaving me "in the dark". The other feature I like the most is it has a light sensor, and will not turn on the light(s) if there is ample ambient light already in the area. I find this extremely useful when I'm carrying anything into or out of the the garage and want to keep my hands available (like taking out the garbage, bringing in something from the car, etc. I'm VERY pleased with this product (as well as everything that Philips makes), and I will likely be buying a couple more of these switches in the near future.

Setup was a breeze; the Hue app found the device within seconds and setup was not as difficult as I anticipated. We only have it active late evening for a couple of hours and this was another selling point for us, I did not want the hallway lights to come on in the middle of the night to wake us all so I set it to "Do Nothing" from after 10 pm until the following evening. Motion Sensitivity can be set to Low, Medium or High (we have ours on Low due to cats) and also has a Daylight Sensitivity setting.
So far, this is one of my favourite Hue products and I am not disappointed!
