The sound of silence
This is a great speaker if you like having a silent house. Since I bought it to, you know, listen to things I am very disappointed in this speaker. There is a known bug that their support team admitted to me - it can’t detect audio signals to switch between Bluetooth / Airplay / aux-in. This makes it basically unusable since there is no manual override. It gets stuck on one input source. So when I try to play via any of those channels and the phone behaves as if it is working and... nothing from the speaker. See this behavior with all our phones. Hard power cycle doesn’t fix this. It’s just a pretty piece of interior design at our house. Oppo support refused to accept it as a return. Stay away.

very impressive for a small full range speaker. I would recommend it to others who have 300 to spend.

I have an Oppo blu-ray player which I really like and wanted to like this speaker more than I do. The sound is good but not substantially better than the Anker speaker I was using that was a fifth of the Oppo price. I mainly use this speaker to listen to an Echo dot using bluetooth and purchased it because it also supports Airplay. There is, however, a known bug when switching between bluetooth and Airplay that caused the speaker to think it was playing Airplay but no sound came out. When going back to bluetooth no sound would come out either. It took a power unplug/replug to get it back. I went back and forth with Oppo for a week on this before I was finally able to get Airplay by first using my tablet as a source then going to Airplay. I'm not crazy about the app either.

I would not recommend this product since (according to Oppo) will NOT support Apple's Airplay2. Kind of limits the product's functionality.

I really wanted to like these speakers because I love the sound quality, especially given the $300 price point, and the connectivity options (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB, Bluetooth, audio in).

Unfortunately, the connection just isn't reliable for more than one hour, and I've tried both Bluetooth (so no Internet involved) and Spotify with offline/downloaded songs and a connection over my wireless LAN (
Securifi Almond - (3 Minute Setup) Touchscreen WiFi Wireless Router / Range Extender / Access Point / Wireless Bridge - Works with Amazon Alexa ). I've made sure to update to the latest firmware as of April 2nd, 2017: 27-0120.

I've even upgraded to an ASUS AC1900 dual-band router to make sure I had way more than enough bandwidth, but the connection still dropped. I'll have to return these speakers.

=== DETAILS / ISSUES ===

1. First off, the Bluetooth connection doesn't support aptX. The lag makes them unusable for watching any content (audio and video will be out of sync).

2. Second, the connection will sometimes drop and only one speaker will sound for a few seconds (tested over Bluetooth from my laptop). This completely kills the mood. Worse, as I was writing this review, the Sonicas completely lost signal or volume, out of the blue. Spotify appears to be playing fine, but no sound is coming out. Changing the output to the Phorus speakers confirmed it wasn't a Spotify or Internet connectivity problem. I pressed the volume up button on one Sonica speaker, but still silence. Changed phones, nothing. Re-added the speakers in the app, nothing. I could re-connect to the speakers over Bluetooth, and after that, trying to play again from Spotify worked. But this is definitely NOT something I'm willing to do when I have a party or guests over.

This just happened again while playing from Spotify to the Sonica pair (not over Bluetooth), and coincided with my Internet connection going down for a minute. The speakers recovered on their own eventually, but the failure mode was weird: one speaker went silent, while the other continued to play music (with skips). Note that the song I was playing on Spotify was downloaded locally, and the speakers and my phone are connected over my wireless LAN, which bridges to the hotspot via a Securify Almond 3 router. So the LAN was fine at all times, and there was no reason for playback to be interrupted. And even if Internet connectivity was somehow required but unavailable, that doesn't explain why one speaker was still playing audio.

All in all, I can't trust the speakers to play offline songs for more than one hour without interruptions.

3. Another issue - after you pair them as stereo, they still appear individually in the list of Bluetooth devices. Not a big problem, since after you connect to one of them, music will play out of both. Hope the next firmware update addresses this. They should become one Bluetooth device.

4. There's no balance control in the app (or on the speakers)! If you're not smack in the center between the speakers, you can't adjust the volume of each speaker in the pair, as you can with any ordinary stereo speakers.

5. The app needs some improvements:

* The design is a little weird. For example, buttons are tiny text placed at the top of the screen (e.g. a tiny "+" to add speakers, or "Add" in the opposite corner to confirm adding a speaker). I almost missed them and wondered how in the world you'd add speakers. There are good design principles out there (e.g. Material Design for Android). No need to come up with unique design choices when it comes to button placement.

* The app claims it lets you organize your favorite music, but favoriting the currently playing song in Spotify is impossible (there's a tiny star icon, but it does nothing when you tap it).

Other than that, the speakers have good bass, are loud, and can fill a 500 sq ft room with sound at medium volume. They're carefully designed to be unobtrusive - you can turn off all the LEDs, for example. I really like them but the connectivity issues prevent me from keeping them. Hopefully a firmware update is on the way.

The sound is decent, considering the small size of the unit, but not nearly as good as you’d expect for the price. Airplay doesn’t actually work – and the company knows this, yet continues to advertise Airplay compatibility as a feature. Also, the unit can only be controlled through a smartphone app that is buggy now and is likely to get much worse in the near future. (Oppo is in the process of going out of business, so it’s unlikely the app will be updated to keep up with iOS and Android OS updates.) The bottom line: this product would be great if it worked as advertised, but it doesn’t.
