Install: The install is still super easy. The most important thing is to make sure that the strike and corresponding hole in the jam are properly located. If not, I am pretty sure that the motor will have to work hard to push the bolt and the batteries will not last long. You can check this by engaging the bolt with a screwdriver before installing the rest of the lock.
Programming: Entering the codes is incredibly easy. You can put in 5 codes in a couple minutes or less. It also has little switches to control: whether or not it automatically locks after 30 seconds, whether the status led blinks; audio beeping on or off; and, whether you want to use the random number generator to prevent fingerprint patterns of your passcode. If you have the latter on it just will automatically light up two numbers for you to press before you put in the passcode. Having the ability to control these things and not being stuck with features you don't like is really nice.
Pairing: I had no problem pairing it with the smart things hub and it works perfectly.
Batteries: They were very easy to install and they seem like they would be easy to change when the time comes. The bottom of the keypad also has two hidden terminals for you to power it with a 9v battery in emergency dead battery situations, which is very nice.
Minor criticisms:
-The instructions are adequate but not amazing.
-I had a couple of questions before I purchased. The hold time for support was a little over 10 minutes which seemed a little longer than I would have liked. On the plus side, support reps were helpful, knowledgable and native english speakers so maybe it is worth the wait.
-I really wanted this in polished chrome but they only offer two finish options.
-I feel like the interior component is somewhat bulky for my taste, but it seems like they all are.

Only had it installed for a week now but so far so great! My neighbor has the previous model with a key and I was about to purchase that when I noticed Kwikset released a newer model. The obsidian is simplistic and looks really modern. Wife was unsure at first but after installation and first use she's sold and we will purchase another one for our other door. I'm holding off on the second purchase as I want to use it for a month to test reliability and make sure we're set on this. Touchpad is very responsive and installation was a breeze! I use this indoors so glare and smudges are difficult to see and can't review on that. Wife did look all around from different angles though to check for finger prints but with the random digits at startup there's fingerprints everywhere. Programming is very simple as well, just read the manual and follow through. Kwikset also provides youtube tutorials so they made it as simple as possible. I didn't want a wireless connected model so this works perfect for my needs.
Pros:
- Super simple installation, swap out and install in less than 15 minutes
- Brightly lit-up keys make it easy to see
- Programming is simple, just follow the manual or watch Kwikset's youtube tutorial
- Sleek and modern design, looks great!
Cons:
- None so far!
The problem that i experienced was power related. Initial batteries installed lasted a few weeks before the red warning light would start blinking and lock would no longer lock from the outside when leaving. Low batteries, right? Nope, i tested the batteries, they were fine. Switched to lithium energizers and got a couple months out of it. This went on for about a year... very annoying changing batteries every 6-8 weeks. Then it just died altogether. I can put brand new lithiums in and it immediately reports dead battery. I've tried a reset with new lithium batteries,
no dice. It doesn't matter what type of batteries i use, it now just continuously reports the batteries as dead. I expected more from a sleek looking kwikset product. I've used many of their products on various projects over the years... I'll be trying a different manufacturer in the future.
Like other reviewers, I love the simplicity of this deadbolt, both in functionality and in visual appearance. It is sexy on the door.
One thing to keep in mind is that the screen is not quite as responsive as a smartphone's. the first few times I used the touchpad, I was a bit annoyed with the delay because the screen didn't wake up instantly when I touched it. I realized that you need to leave your hand on the screen rather than just tapping it. This minor delay is a bit annoying but not the end of the world.
I had also thought I read that you can disable the function where you have to key in two random digits before your code, and that you could turn on a feature that will automatically lock the door after a certain amount of time. I would be interested in both of these things but could not find any documentation of those settings in the instructions.
Top reviews from other countries
It did connect fairly easily to home assistant and I am able to lock/unlock the door remotely with ease.
I am unfortunately past the return period here on amazon but it will regardless be coming off the door. We can't risk an unresponsive touchscreen with winter coming nor an unlocked door on the way out because of a 'jam'. Overall, not impressed and do not recommend.
