Amazing sound with great low end
Amazing sound with great low end, especially for the size. The more I use this speaker, the more I love it. I planned on getting EITHER a UE Megaboom OR Charge 2+. The UE gets louder, which is what I needed for outdoor use, but the JBL wins hands down for bass. Its so good, I may just plop down an extra $75 and keep both. JBL is an indoor speaker that can get wet, has great bass, but distorts above 3/4 volume. The UE is an outdoor speaker you can submerge in water that sounds great at high volume without distortion. There's room in my world for both of these, they complement each other so much I think I'll bring both camping. Shhhh, dont tell my wife I didn't return the JBL.The battery life is very impressive. Its very light weight and very portable, which makes for a perfect home/travel speaker. The bass on this little can makes me think I have a subwoofer in my house, its that good. Mounting location makes a huge difference (indoors, face either bass speaker towards a wall *like you would any sub* and it magnifies the bass). It was surprisingly satisfying listening to jazz, acoustic, and pop.I bought this for a road bike, and unfortunately it doesn't cut it. The mids sound muddy when mounted to the frame. The overall volume isn't anywhere near as loud as my $30 Beason (which sounds terrible in comparison when A/B tested in the garage). The JBL is by far a superior speaker, but unfortunately that doesn't matter when cycling. The bass cannot be heard above 10mph and its not loud enough when keeping a stead 20-25 mph pace. This isn't the speaker's fault, this isn't its purpose.I'll be looking elsewhere for a cycling speaker, but if I needed this for household use I'd be one happy camper.

While calling myself an audiophile would be an exaggeration, in my 30 year broadcast career, and personal love of music of all genres, I appreciate good sound reproduction. That of course can be a relative term. When it comes to portable blue tooth speakers, what "good" means depends on varying factors. There is a trade off of the convenience of portability with a small size with a reduced frequency response, especially in the low ranges, the bass. I have enjoyed the very inexpensive and very compact (you can slip it in your pocket) Dknight Magic Box 2. For the bargain basement price of $29 more or less, it provides a startlingly vivid sound in the mid and high range. You have to position it just right in a corner or against a wall (a long known audio trick) to get what I would call a decent if not exceptional bass response. However put it outside and almost all of the lower end disappears. I finally was ready to try a higher end name, and was prepared to pay the extra cabbage. Like you who are reading this, I pored over all the Amazon reviews of various brand names...and narrowed my search to this JBL beauty. I noticed the few negative reviews had nothing to do with the sound quality but with issues of failure or power problems. So if that occurs down the line..I will be prepared to modify this review. Now for the sound: Somehow JBL has created a carry around speaker (will not fit in your pocket but still small and portable) that gives the kind of rich low end thump bass reminiscent of the large console stereo my grandparents had (with two 12 inch woofers). But the quality extends to the mids and high end. Playing some of my favorite Amazon prime tunes that I have listened to hundreds of time, I discovered new more lifelike nuances I hadn't caught previously. It is simply a joy to experience. It approaches the level of a standard dual two speaker stereo system, with a couple of exceptions. Though more than loud enough in virtually any indoor setting, it cannot rival a true large concert like system. Also, though the great sound will fill the room, unless you are a foot away, you will not notice any dramatic stereo separation. But again, that's a trade off for the size. For many years I enjoyed a $500 Bose Wave Radio/CD player. Updated versions of this continue to be popular today. Bose is a great product, but the sound from this small wonder beats the Wave.. The fact you cannot skip forward or go back a track from the speaker is irrelevant to me, I always facilitate that from my smart phone. Have yet to use phone call function...again secondary to me. My wife and I tried the multi blue tooth device function..she was able to "cut in" and play a song. However when I tried to return the favor my phone would not re-pair until she turned her Bluetooth off. Mine is a Droid and hers an I-Phone so maybe that is the issue. Again, not really important to me. The water resistance is a nice feature. I highly recommend this one...really sweet listening experience.

I would describe myself as an older guy who has been into audio most of my life. I'm retired and have a dj hobby-business (Traktor software/hardware, QSC and Yamaha PA spkrs/subs, Mackie mic-mixer, etc.). At home I've got a semi-audiophile-wannabe-on-a-budget setup: B&W 684s (first generation) with matching middle speaker, Mirage sub/surrounds and a mid-range Denon AV receiver that replaced an expensive Marantz that crapped out early. Over the last 50 years or so I've owned a lot of different audio equipment, mostly good and some bad. On the portable, non-bluetooth audio side I have a Bose SoundDock Portable 30-Pin iPod Speaker Dock and Kicker iK501. I have the following bluetooth speakers: JBL Flip 2, Sony HT-CT780 soundbar and the JBL Charge 2+ being reviewed. My musical tastes run mostly from classic to modern pop/rock/singer-songwriter and blues (mostly vocals), edm, some rap, jazz piano and a hodgepodge of other stuff. Sorry if this seems boring or worse, pretentious. I simply want to convey my frame of reference for this review.

I read a ton of reviews on the UE Boom, Boom 2 and MegaBoom; the Bose Soundlink Mini and Mini 2; and the JBls. In the end, the JBL Charge 2+ seemed to fit what I was looking for: a portable, reliable, not overpriced, great-sounding-for-the-money bluetooth speaker. I was persuaded by some of the reviews that pointed out, while perhaps not an acoustically flat/neutral speaker, it has solid bass for it size, good (not overblown) highs and mid-range clarity/presence. All of these things are true. I hate speakers that over- or under-emphasize a particular part of the audio spectrum to the point of being annoying. I was worried that all the comments about the bass might mean it was boomy. Not so. It's got a pleasing balance (but isn't flat/dry sounding) and the emphasized vocal presence sounds just about right to me. Btw, I can't think of too many things that are more subjective and subject to more variables than audio (particularly speaker) reviews.

The bottom line: given my taste in music, my experience with a wide variety of audio equipment, my aging ears, the price of the Charge 2+ compared to its competitors, the fact that it just sounds"right" to me, JBL's long history as a quality speaker manufacturer (particularly vs. a tech company like UE (Logitech)) and the fact I find the Charge 2+ very listenable for extended periods, I felt this deserved a 5 star rating (unfortunately, no one offered me a free product). EDITED 1/25/16: One caveat (shared in so many words by others): This is a $130, 7.25" long bluetooth speaker (not an array of 1000w PA mains/subs that can collapse your chest). It will certainly play loud enough in a medium-sized room to interfere with conversation, but it is not really loud enough to drive a semi-noisy party in a larger room. With those expectations in mind, this is a great little speaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic speaker and loads of bass
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 9, 2018
This is an excellent speaker. I went for this version rather than the newer Charge 3 as I read this one to be better, and the reviews weren’t wrong. Crystal clear sound and enough bass for anyone’s needs. I’ve noticed some speakers aren’t loud enough, especially when using outside however this speaker certainly isn’t the case. Battery is also very good and I only charge it once a week at most. Anyone looking for a decent Bluetooth speaker, definitely pick this one. You won’t be disappointed.
If I had to give it a criticism, it would be the charging arrangement. Many speakers can charge in a dock of some kind however this uses a cable you plug into the back, making it a fiddly ordeal sometimes. This is a very minor thing though.

I really love this speaker. Got it a few weeks ago and used it throughout our vacation at the cottage, around the pool, etc. It's extremely easy to pair with ipad/iphone. The sound quality is great! We tried the JBL Flip before (less expensive) but didn't like the sound quality so we returned it. This one is much better. It's nice that you can connect 3 devices at once. The long battery life is a definite asset. We rarely need to charge it. I would recommend this product to anyone that loves great music on the go! The only thing missing is a carry case but we'll buy that on Amazon soon.
