Pros:
• Easy to install. Just set it on the floor where a water leak might happen.
• I get a notification on my phone within seconds of a leak being detected.
• I have 18 of these, and they all work flawlessly.
• Insteon claims that the battery should last for about 10 years
• The range is decent. All of mine connected except one. Then it successfully connected later when I added a dual-band Insteon dimmer switch that extended the signal into the basement.
Cons:
• If you plan on installing these where pets might get to them, make sure you attach them to the ground with some double-sided tape. Otherwise your pets will knock them over, and they won't work. It would be great if Insteon would address this limitation.
• These sensors DO NOT work with the Insteon Pro Hub. Make sure you get the non-pro hub if you plan on using these sensors.
Overall I'm really happy with these. Next I plan on installing a valve at the main water inlet which can be controlled by the Insteon Hub. That way the water to the entire house can be shut off whenever a leak is detected.
The text / email notification will provide a timestamp and make it super easy to pull up the video footage on my NVR vs having to search for a particular event.
Super happy with the responsiveness of this device and the ability to design the solution I wanted. I'm trying to talk my wife into a WWII air raid siren for an alarm, but I don't think she's on board with that idea....something about waking up neighbors. :-)
First, although I don't think it'll be a problem, it feels plastic-y (if that makes any sense). Second, I wish it would report its battery level - I'm not quite sure how I'll know if the battery is dead otherwise, since this device installs inside the door jamb.
But the range seems fine, and the open/close mechanism seems sturdy. I love that the sensor is essentially hidden from sight (UNLIKE the INSTEON 2843-222 Wireless Open/Close Sensor ), which makes for a very clean installation.
I have four of these sensors in my house to warn me of water in the basement. One by a window that leaks occasionally during very heavy storms, by a sump pump, my water manifold and my water heater.
About 2 months ago I woke up during a heavy thunderstorm, and checked my phone to see if there were any alarms from the detectors. There was no emails or screen pops, so I figured i was ok. I decided to double-check to be safe, and off course there was about 3 inches of water near the window. I quickly got the wet vac, cleaned up as much as I could, and put a tarp outside. That was strike one, and I was hoping it was a fluke.
Tonight we got hit by another massive thunderstorm, and I came downstairs to be safe. The leak detector by the window was sitting in another 3 inch puddle of water, with zero alerts sent. The green light flashed very so often, just as a slap in the face that it wasn't a dead battery.
At this point these things are less than worthless to me. A decent amount of money spent on the kit, with zero return.
I have tested them, and put them in water....and they do send out alerts...sometimes.
If it isn't reliable, every single time it gets wet, then stop promoting it as a leak detector.
