The Hubitat WORKS after a power outage. Power comes on, modem and router come up, and hubitat works. As it should be. I don't have to reset things. If the power comes back on while I am in bed, I can just keep my eyes closed for a few minutes, then mumble "Alexa, turn on bedtime lights" and all the lights set themselves correctly. SOOOOOO much better then getting up at 3 am and rebooting routers and hubs. Ugh. Bye Wink.
And
THE LACK OF A PHONE APP DOES NOT MATTER. Once set up, Alexa or Google Assistant (GA) are your phone apps. Everything on the Hubitat can be synced to GA and/or Alexa. I control my lights remotely using Alexa whenever necessary. No Worries! You don't need an extra phone app. It is just not a concern.
Setup? Not that bad. There is a bit of a learning curve with the browser-based interface. But for most simple smart home setups with some lights, a few plugs, and maybe a lock, it is pretty easy. Just do this:
Don't even worry about "apps" in the interface. Not yet. Just "Add devices" from the "Devices" tab. Follow manufactures instructions to put devices into pairing mode and carry your laptop around the house from device to device. (To reset Osram bulbs: On, count to three, Off, count to three, On, count to three, Off, count to three...Do this FIVE times and then leave on and wait 5 seconds and the light will flash (pairing mode). For Cree, do this, counting time: On, Off, 1, 2, On, Off, 1, 2, On, Off, 1, 2, then On. On the THIRD on, the light will flash (pairing mode)).
Once all of your devices are paired (up to an hour or two, no matter WHAT hub you get), go to the Apps tab and add the Alexa and/or Google Assistant app. You will have to tell the Alexa/GA apps WHAT devices to control (there is a "Select All" option). Then go to your phone, open the correct app (Alexa or GA) and Discover Devices. Then use Alexa or GA on your phone to set up groups (living room lights) and routines (bed time lights). It is not NEARLY as hard as reviews would lead you to believe. It is tedious to switch hubs. No getting around that. But this is a good hub. Works well. Seems bullet proof. Runs locally on your LAN. Does not go through external servers to work (Wink does/did). Note: Using Alexa or GA to control your home DOES require passing through external Internet servers as these devices only work if they pass through their respective servers. But, if the Internet is down but you have power, you can use your laptop to control your smart home. Otherwise...the hub essentially DOES require the Internet because you are using Internet devices to interact with it.
The other app you need to install is the Dashboard app. But you DON'T NEED IT. AT ALL. You can stop your Hubitat setup as soon as your devices are discovered and your smart home apps are activated. The Dashboard gives you a fancy browser-based interface with all of your devices neatly lined up, with icons, so you can click on them to turn them on/off/dim (YOU have to set it up). But you don't really need to do this. Only if you want to poke around with your smart home on your computer. For the average Alexa end-user, just add devices, add Alexa, add All Devices to Alexa, then use Alexa to discover devices. Then Group devices, then set up Routines. Begin telling Alexa to control your home. Done. When you run into a road-block, use YouTube to get help. (Like if a device shows "on" in devices tab, but Alexa has turned it off, you can click "configure" and then "save" and it will likely fix the issue. Got that from YouTube.)
It is pretty easy, but I did spend a about 4-6 hours setting everything up, including learning curve, watching a couple of youtube videos, and resetting all of my bulbs and routines. Not that bad. I am REALLY glad I switched. So much more responsive and everything works after a power outage. Just all around better than the Wink.
The Rule Machine app is useful. It is basically an ITTT interface. I set up my front porch light as follows "turn light on, 30 mins before sunset. Turn light off, 30 mins after sunrise." I had to do it twice to figure out the interface and what to click on. Took a youtube video and about 15 minutes the first time. But now I have an automated front porch light. Pretty cool. But not necessary. You don't need the Rule Machine app. Or the Dashboard app. Just extras if you want to use them.
If you have already set up your whole house using the Wink app, Alexa and you have set up routines, you can do this. If you have no idea what I am talking about....it might be a rough time for you.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND (2019...these things change).
Enter Hubitat. Right away, the feature that caught my interest was the ability to run my hub(s) completely local, with zero dependencies on a cloud platform. This meant that even if my Internet connection went down, my ability to control my hub and its connected devices from my local network wouldn't be impacted (or in SmartThings' case, my Internet connection was fine, it was their fragile cloud service that went offline). I also liked that my personal data never had to leave my network or be stored/processed by another company.
So, I began researching Hubitat and reading the community forums and official documentation. I ended up buying two hubs, because I have dozens of Sylvannia Smart+ Bulbs that try to serve as ZigBee repeaters for other ZigBee devices. They make fine repeaters for other ZigBee bulbs, but poor repeaters for any other ZigBee device. So, it's recommended to isolate them on their own ZigBee network, hence my "Bulb Hub". Everything else was added to my "Master Hub", which is a mixture of ZigBee and Z-Wave devices. I did change the Z-wave channel on the Master Hub and the ZigBee channel on the Bulb hub to two different lesser used channels after surveying what channels my neighbors were using for their wifi networks. This really helped with the responsiveness between the hubs and their connected devices.
There was a slight learning curve involved with setting up automations in the built-in Rules Machine app, but after reading a few tutorials I was able to get the hang of it quickly.
Because I chose to isolate my ZigBee bulbs on their own hub, I had to set up the built-in Hub Link (Master Hub)/Link to Hub (Bulb Hub) apps in order to make the bulb devices available to my Master Hub so I could incorporate them into my Rule Machines automations. This was pretty straightforward.
The biggest issue I ran into was with the Hubitat mobile app for iOS. The app is still in its infancy stages, so it still has a ways to go before it can be considered as a true native experience (rather than a wrapper around Safari WebKit). I could never get the geofence feature to work with 100% reliability on any of my family's iPhone devices for detecting presence. It would work great one day, and not at all the next. After doing some research, I finally abandoned the iOS app for presence in favor of the Life360 built-in app on my Master Hub. My family was already using Life360 on our iPhones, so it was nice to see that Hubitat had a built-in app for it. Life360 has been working perfectly as a presence device, so now my automations that use presence as a trigger and/or condition are working 100% now.
Although the iOS Hubitat app still needs some work, I do like that it allows for push notifications to be sent to our iPhones from our Hubitat hubs. This allows us to receive instant notifications about informative or critical events, such as a detected water leak or whenever a time-triggered automation is activated.
The dashboards are okay. It would be nice if one day the iOS app used features of the Apple frameworks to provide a more native user experience rather than simply wrapping the mobile website. In the meantime, the CSS nature of the dashboard tiles makes it a little cumbersome to rearrange tiles or make a single dashboard that renders well across different screen sizes. Overall, the dashboards work well and are really fast (compared to the latency laden SmartThings mobile iOS UI). I'm sure this will only improve with time. Oh, and for those who want it, your dashboards can optionally be accessed via the Hubitat Cloud. Again, it's completely optional and can be disabled for your dashboards. Those who want to keep everything local can disable the cloud access and set up a VPN connection to their home network instead.
Overall, I've been very pleased with my Hubitat hubs! It's so nice to be able to run everything locally. No need to wait on a cloud service to process a command or run an automation. Everything is processed locally and is very fast. The platform is relatively new and is maturing rapidly. I am excited to see what the future holds for Hubitat and am so glad I discovered it. I no longer have to worry about another SmartThings cloud outage.
Good job Hubitat!

Reviewed in Mexico on December 21, 2020
I had been having latency problems with my SmartThings hub (upwards of 5 seconds to turn on a light in response to a command through Alexa), so I was looking for a solution that was on prem to allow me to get in general better response. This looked to fit the bill, but don't let their description fool you... this product will not improve upon that. IT IS TERRIBLE.
Rather than going all-in in switching everything over (I guess my spidey senses must have been tingling), I connected 5x Z-Wave light switches, added the Amazon Echo Skill (so I could talk to it) and put in two basic time of day and presence based rules into it. A very light test, but a test nonetheless...
First off I had 2 switches fail to link up the first time (one, took 4 tries), not a good start, but I tried to write that off as learning curve/bad signal strength, though I was pretty sure it wasn't.
Once past that hurdle, it was so far so good for a while, things go busy so I didn't go any further with switching over, did a few of the suggested updates and then one day, those 5 switches stopped responding to any voice commands. Tried logging into the device, that wouldn't work either... Dashboard, frozen... It was locked up. That was the first time it happened, and sometimes things do happen so I gave it a hard reboot. Since that time, if I don't reboot it every 3-4 days, it loses ability to control switches, or I will ask Alexa to turn a switch and the light goes on and 10 seconds later she says she the device is not responding.
Once this happened, like the good sweaty nerd I am, I scoured their community forum for this problem and found many, many instances of people having similar problems some dating back into early 2019. All of these have a consistent theme, there has been zero resolve. They have been testing different skills or removing things to see what they can find, but no one in the community has found a solution. More importantly, no one from Hubitat in these forums has chimed in with any type of suggestion.
At this point figuring if the community hasn't solved it yet, I am not going to add much, I sent an email to support asking about the issue. I received the auto response with a "we got your case, here is your case number" type message... and now we wait, and wait, and wait. After 19 DAYS and several follow-ups, including an exasperated "I want an RMA" email, I get a response that it is a known issue, they are working on a release to fix it. Working in the tech industry and looking at the questions they are asking coupled with the lack of timeframe on the fix, they are still very much in the figuring this out phase.
And be very much aware that the RMA policy is 30 days from date of purchase. So with 19 days waiting on support to even answer me... I would have been pretty much out of time regardless.
TLDR; Product full of bugs, Customer service is terrible, don't waste your money.
