This light works as described. It turns off when the lights are on, and turns on when it is dark, unplugged or the power is out. There is also and off switch.It only takes up one outlet.It is bright enough to light up my entire kitchen, and dimly light the hall and my living room. I can walk down the hall, make a sandwich, find the tv remote and go back to bed with just this light. It is probably too bright for bedroom use *at first*.*Year and a half later update*I bought a second one of these to put in another room. I didn't realize how much dimmer this has become. The new one is so much brighter. I have since moved the old one to a bedroom because it just isn't bright enough.The sensor on this did not turn off when my CFL light was on. However when I got LED bulbs that were 5000k "daylight", the sensor was able to detect it and turn off the lightI am including a picture of my old backup light, and new one for brightness comparison.Using my Kill A Watt meter this uses .3 watts when fully charged and .4 when it needs to charge the battery. Both my new one and old light use the same amount of power. Turning on or off of the flashlight part doesn't seem to effect the power draw.

I should have reviewed this item sooner as I like it so much. We have had several power outages since I purchased this item and this light has been a great asset. It is plugged into a wall outlet in my kitchen area. I'm usually in my den when we loose power and this light is bright enough for me to get to it without running into furniture. I then take it off the wall plug, fold back the prongs so its easier to hold and use it as a flashlight to move around the house. It fits easily in your hand is most comfortable. The light 3 leds on the flashlight portion give off a lot of light and has lasted about 4 hours of use when fully charged. Of course, anytime you need a flashlight, it is ready to be used. That makes it so convenient and it has great light. Just remember to put it back on the wall when you are finished, so it is ready for its most important use..... emegencies. It also works as a nightlight. When plugged into a power outlet, it has a nightlight option. This is 1 led. There is an auto/off switch, so you can decide if you want the night light on. It works like a charm.

You can't beat it; $10 for a safety device that can help you during power outages or earthquakes. I plug one into an upstairs hallway electrical outlet outside our bedroom. We had a power outage the other evening, and the light was shining, lighting up the hallway, automatically! If we had a power outage in an earthquake at night, it could save your life. Even for non-emergency situations, it's easy to find plugged into the wall. It's LED, so the light is bright and the rechargeable battery should last a long time. And it's nice looking and really unobtrusive. I noticed that they were using them at work, plugging them into some of our labs that have no windows. Put one in any room where you spend a lot of time!

But seriously, kids love this light - it is much brighter than the Maxxima MLN-50 Light but does tend to get a but more light up in your face. It's in the design of the angle of the light. Kids don't seem to mind this at all though.

We recently traveled with this and all three kids were comfortable with just this light and stayed in the second bedroom, leaving quiet nights of sleep for parents. Five stars for this alone. Also, this was great for travel due to the light weight (much lighter than other emergency, plug-in we have) and the plug rotates into the base. Plus you can get even more light with the three-LED switch. Notably, you can illumate both the single and three LEDs at the same time.

There is just something exgtremely comforting in having abundant light the moment things go down - withotu havingn to remember where the light is or go treking in the dark to find it. It's just immediately there.

Un-advertised benefit? These "flashlights" immediately turn back off and you know IMMEDIATELY when power is restored. No more having to check for it b/c this many items once powered off need to be manually turned back on even if there is power again.

Can't recommend this more highly - for immediate safety, and immediate awareness of when the power goes out and even when it comes back on.

However, the smaller night light is also bright and is distracting if you try to use it in your bedroom, so I leave it off. This might not be a problem if you use it in a hall or some other room. I had one of these by the front door and decided to get one for the hallway, too. There are apparently one too many options for me (night light, auto, flashlight, on/off) and I had decided that this one was defective, so e-mailed Amazon and they promptly sent me a replacement. Upshot is that they all work great and I didn't want to send the one I thought was defective back because it isn't defective, but I couldn't figure out how to let them know that, so they finally charged me again for it, which is the right outcome. I paid for three, I received three, and they all work great!
We use two of them for nightlights in the kitchen and guest area hallway, and they come on automatically when it's dark enough. The other one is plugged in by the front door so I can grab it and use it as a flashlight while taking my dog out at night.
We lose power a lot as it's windy here, so it's great to have three flashlights that are always charged and ready to go, as well as having a little lighting come on automatically when the power goes off.
