I bought a Echo Spot for the bedroom, so, somewhat to my surprise, the Show is now located in the living room, next to the TV. Why? Because my family really enjoys having it there. They can check on the weather, get caught up on the news, listen to music while watching the lyrics, turn on the a/c units, lights, and turn other things on and off. I have a gen2 Echo in the living room still, but nobody ever uses it anymore. As far as we can discern, the Show sounds just as good. So now I have to find another place for the Echo (probably the kitchen, to rep!ace the Dot in there). I originally used a Fire 8 tablet in show mode in the living room, but the Show has totally replaced it. The Fire Tab is now just a tablet, and the Show has come to stay. That's pretty good for something I bought on a whim, with very low expectations.
Update 5/8/19
Still working great. Gets even better with time, as Alexa learns new skills. I still think a Fire Tablet 8 is a better deal, but the Echo Show works as advertised.
Update 3/11/19
The Show is still working great. I bought it thinking I would use it in the kitchen, but it is now on my grandstand as a high-tech alarm coming clock. It is really nice to be able to listen to my news, my commute, my appointments , and make up my to-do list as I get ready in the morning. I had planned on getting a Spot for that purpose, but the larger screen on the Show makes it easier to watch movies before going to bed.
I resisted getting a show because of the high price and limited ability. But when I heard that the Gen1 Show's software had been updated to the Gen2's standard, and saw the the warehouse price was $99, it seemed like a great time to take the plunge.
The unit I received came in what appeared to be the original packing. It even came with the protective plastic film covers on it. I chose the "acceptable quality" selection, but I have not been able to find any sign of wear or usage whatsoever. It certainly appears to be brand new.
Set up was simple, as usual, but after I got it set up I could not find a browser. I had to go back to settings to find out that it needed an update. Not a big deal, but I don't know if someone unfamiliar with Echo products would have known to do that. After a 15 minute update process the Show functioned perfectly. I was able to get my Hulu account set up on it, and my Pandora, Tune In, and other accounts from my other Echoes transferred seamlessly. Having used the Show Mode on my HD8 tablet quite a bit it didn't take long to figure things out.
A couple of oberservations:
- YouTube does work now, but it is not really integrated into the whole Echo universe. You can't do everything hands free. Having said that, it does work well. I would not have purchased a Show without the ability to use YouTube.
-having a browser is really nice. It functions just like any other browser. I was disappointed, but not surprised, when Crackle and some other steaming video services did not work, but with YouTube, Hulu, and Prime Video I don't think I will ever be without something to watch. The ability to look things up with the browser is great, and I am really glad that they included it.
- I have heard a lot of comments about how the Gen2 show sounds much better than the Gen1. If that's true, then the Gen2 must sound incredible, because the Gen1 sounds really good to me, as good if not better than my Gen2 Echo.
- the 7 inch screen is fine. Of course I watch a lot of movies on my Fire Tab7, so I might not be a good judge. But the Show screen looked fine to me. I watched two movies on it in a row without any issues.
-the calling features are the same as on my tablet in show mode, which means they work well. I have bèen video chatting with my family via FB Messenger, and I am interested in seeing if it works better with the echos. I will update my review after getting more experience with it.
I know that this review is of limited interest, as the gen1 Shows are about gone. But if you have been on the fence about buying a Show, right now they are a great value at $99. So buy one. While you still can!
The Echo Show arrived nicely packaged and my first impression is that it is a clean looking design and a bit smaller than I had pictured in my mind, but that is not necessarily a bad thing, as it looks great on my counter top. It is EXTREMELY easy to set up due to the touch screen. No need to consult the Alexa app. I only needed to know the name of my Wifi, wifi password and Amazon password. This was a truly simple process and the touch screen walks you through it. It needed to update before starting, which I found odd since it was literally released today, but it only took a few minutes and we were up and running. I guess this is just an example of how Amazon is constantly updating and improving these devices.
The home screen displays the time and I set it up to scroll through family pictures which I really enjoy. If you own a Kindle Fire, this has a similar pull down from the top menu to give access to your settings.
I began asking Alexa questions immediately. "Alexa, how old is Tom Brady?" I got a nice picture of the golden boy along with his age which is definitely a plus. The questions are answered aloud as well as with text on the screen. You can set up a Flash Briefing using the Alexa App on your phone to tell you the news whenever you ask. CNN provided a nice video with their news which was really cool, but NPR and Wall Street Journal just had audio. I was a bit disappointed that the majority of the skills I tried did not utilize the screen. I think that just like the original Echo, this will improve with time. These are skills (apps) so it is just a matter of the skill updating to adjust to the new technology. Amazon is also great at listening to feedback and adding more features all the time. Echo Show is able to list movie times and even show movie trailers on the screen. The picture quality is very good. I also ask sports questions and the team logo, scores and information are displayed on the screen along with the answer to my question. I'm a big college sports fan and I love asking when the next game is or the score of the last game. This is a great feature.
Now, what I use my Echo for the most...playing music. I am an Amazon Prime member so have access to the Prime music library. You can also use Pandora, Sirius, Spotify, Iheart radio and TuneIn. "Alexa, play Zach Brown Band." I am amazed at the rich, full sound that fills the large kitchen/family and dining room in our open floor plan house. I am not an expert on speakers but the sound is definitely better than the original Echo which I still very much enjoy. The screen shows the lyrics so feel free to sing along!
One thing that I find myself saying over and over is "Alexa go home." This seems to be the easiest way to close a skill or video and return to your home screen. You can also scroll down from the top of the screen to get your settings bar and touch the home button.
YouTube is the bomb on this device. It is fully functional and will prove to be both entertaining and educational. I love this feature. "Alexa, show me a YouTube video on dog training." Boom! I have many choices available to me on the screen. "Alexa, play number 2." Now, if I could only get Alexa to train my dog to stop putting her front paws up on the kitchen counter...I also tried the Ted Talks app and that provided audio only.
Echo Show reads Audible books very well, the same as the original Echo but with the better speakers. There is not much benefit to having a screen for this, but I listen to Audible a lot while working in the kitchen or making dinner.
I tested the Amazon video capabilities and was very pleased with its ability to provide that content. Since I have it on the kitchen counter, i don't plan to watch movies on the Echo Show, but certainly could if I wanted. I can unplug it and move it anywhere I would like and it quickly connects itself to Wifi once plugged in again.
I looked up a recipe on the AllRecipe skill and was pleased that it showed a picture of the dish and written ingredient list along with directions on the screen. This will be quite helpful. When I played music at the same time I was looking at the recipe, it would go back to the music lyric screen after a few minutes. I would have preferred it to stay on my recipe. I will need to explore this further. It could be user error. The Campbells recipe skill does not currently provide any content on the Echo screen but sends the recipe via email to another device. I would think this can/should be improved.
If you have a timer set, it is displayed on the screen. This also reverts back to the lyric screen if you are playing music, but I don't mind that as you can always ask, "Alexa, how much time is left?" and she will tell you. I just love her! The timer still goes off even with the music on.
I have had this less than 24 hours but am really enjoying it. It is more user friendly than the original Echo because it is continually providing help and information on the touch screen. Even if you are technically challenged, you should be able to use this.
All of the Echo devices are great for running smart home devices, but I don't currently use it for that, so can't really help you there.
You can also make video calls with this, which I have not yet tried. I'm usually walking around and doing other things while talking on the phone so probably won't use this feature much. It would be great if you had children or grandchildren you wanted to see when you were out of town.
In my opinion, the Echo Show is a helpful, innovative and fun gadget to own. It needs to improve a bit to fully utilize the display screen which I believe it will with time. If you currently do not have any Echo devices, then this is the one to get. If you are a bit uncomfortable with technology, then this would be a good device for you because Amazon provides so much support via the touch screen. If you already own the original Echo, you may or may not want to purchase this right now. I have not found it to be worlds better than my original Echo at this point. If you would use the video chat or are wanting a richer sound for music, then I recommend purchasing the Echo Show. I do enjoy now having an Echo in the kitchen/main part of the house and in the bedroom. I am hoping that, like the original Echo, the content will continue to improve with time, but I am very happy with my purchase of the Echo Show. I hope this helped you!
