But anyway, camera arrived in great condition. Set up using the Android app was a snap. Mounted just to the left side and behind my rear view mirror. ( Don't forget to leave room to slide it to the right so you can detach it from the mount)
Using the App, it will display the video with a map overlay, not sure if there is a PC app that will do the same. I have mine set to save the videos in 5 minute increments at max resolution and frame rate. Colors are a bit over sharpened but clear. Road signs are easily read when viewing the videos on my phone. They do take a bit of time to preview on your phone, but if I really was interested in one, I would just remove the SD card and view it on my PC. It does pick up a fair amount of reflection of my dash board at the bottom of the videos, but it does not appear to interfere with the capture of the road. I have not tried it at night yet, but daytime video is very good. Audio picks up very well including the tic/tock of my turn signals. The GPS function is great and speed it about +- 2 MPH of what my cars speedometer reads.
While you can view/play back videos on the cameras screen, they are kind of hard to see on such a small screen, but doable in a pinch.
So far I am very pleased with the quality of the camera and it's functionality. I have not tried the parking mode, I have it turned off. I have the impact setting on MEDIUM, and smacking the camera with my hand did trigger the auto locking of the videos.
If you pick one up you will not be disappointed.
Anyone found a CPL filter that fits this camera?
I’ve received the replacement unit from Roav. It’s clear their customer service pays attention to feedback here, because I got a ping from them almost right after the review went live.
To cut it short, the replacement now works great. Quality (day/night) is pretty damn good. I do see some ‘flare’ when it’s dark and there are bright lights, but not too bad. Overall resolution and frame rate is crisp. UI is simple and straightforward as well. As mentioned, the form factor has grown on me as well.
I still need to spend time and see how some of the more advanced features (such as the Parking Monitor) work. But for now, between the unit itself and Roav/Anker’s solid support, I’m upping my rating to 4 stars.
********************Old Review*****************
I own a whole host of Anker products, and have had a great experience using them. Bought the Roav S1 dashcam based mostly off this experience. Ended up giving my ~3 year old Aukey dashcam (zero issues) to my dad, was looking at something with solid image quality to replace it with.
1. I wasn’t a big fan of the ‘stick on’ form factor of the S1 and other similar dashcams. But after installing it and seeing how unobtrusive/clean the look is...I’ve changed my kind (still a pain that it can’t be moved around once attached to the windscreen)
2. Followed instructions, inserted included Samsung microSD, plugged camera in, went through the initial setup process (language, date etc.) and it seemed to be going well
3. Camera then mentioned that I could/should download the Roav app on my phone to use/change some features/settings; I skipped since I just wanted to use the basic dashcam functionality using the settings I had already configured initially
4. The camera then rebooted and...well...it’s been rebooting ever since. The Roav logo comes up along with the chime and it stays on that screen for a good 20 secs or so before rebooting and going through the same process again (the little LED on the somewhat flimsy power button keeps blinking green/orange)
5. I then read up forums online and followed suggestions to reformat the microSD on a PC and then trying again. No luck. Same issue
6. I then just let it sit plugged in for an hour or so at my desk and came back...and it seemed to work just fine
7. I then go back to the car, assuming it was a glitch that’s fixed itself somehow but nope...exact same issue again
Roav support has been a mixed bag; I’m assuming the team is based off Asia since I usually just get one email response every 24hrs or so (usually very early in the morning). They asked me to try to get them info from the cam (firmware version etc.), even though I had clearly mentioned that the camera was in a continuous boot loop. I agreed to their initial offer of trying a new firmware file...but today AM received an email stating that they were going to do an exchange instead.
I came pretty close to taking the easy route and just returning the item as defective to Amazon...but I know that ends up dinging vendors like Anker pretty hard. Because of the goodwill Anker has built up with me, I will give the exchanged product another shot before updating this review.
