Product Description

It was 1969, and the lull at a once trendy hotel on the California/Nevada border ended with a rush of clientele including an aging priest (Jeff Bridges), a vacuum salesman (Jon Hamm), a drifter (Dakota Johnson), and a soul singer (Cynthia Erivo). However, agendas and identities aren't all what they seem... and between a hunt for hidden bank loot and cultists arriving at the door, no one should expect a good night's rest. Stylish contemporary noir co-stars Chris Hemsworth, Lewis Pullman, Cailee Spaeny.

Too bad the seller didn't include all of the information from this sticker on the listing. I wouldn't have ordered this in the first place. I enjoyed the movie when it was in the theater.

Rented this movie at home to watch with my son. Loved it; entertaining, funny and full of twist and turns. Would watch again and highly recommend.

Upon seeing this movie, I was reminded of the time I wrote a book report in the 6th grade about Orwell's Animal Farm. After I blandly described the events and cast of characters to my classmates, Mrs. Camp knelt discretely at my desk and asked, "you know that book is about communism, right?”

I did not. Similarly, it is easy to miss the overarching message of Bad Times at the El Royale (and not just for 6th graders).

There are several story lines housed in the vacancies of the El Royal-- a formerly prestigious Lake Tahoe hotel whose claim to fame is that it is split by the border of California and Nevada. The division of the hotel is dramatized by a conspicuous red line demarcating the California and Nevada sides. The hotel itself is a character in the film with history, secrets, and contradictions of its own.

Set circa late 1960's, we are introduced to the characters as glaring stereotypes. I rolled my eyes in skepticism, but the esteemed cast and remarkable scenery kept me from cutting it short, and I was rewarded in spades.

No spoilers-- there are several intriguing sub-plots in which we see vast dissonance in the lives of each character. Each possesses ambiguity and paradox of opposites, emphasized by the rifting values in the middle of the 20th century. One of the storylines involves J Edgar Hoover's powerful hold as the director of the FBI for 48 years-- his public facade was one of moral rectitude, but time has revealed that he used blackmail and fraud to secure his notorious reign. Hoover also had a mysterious private life that contrasted his righteous indignation-- but no matter how corrupt or hypocritical anyone might be, each of us is entitled to peaceful fulfillment of our human needs, even amongst all our contradictions.

But I digress. The guests of the El Royale each takes a room on the Nevada side (incidentally, Nevada has been a crucial swing state in recent elections) and begin to reveal their many secrets. We are kept on the edge of our seats as violence and suspense punctuate the absurd, fascinating mingling of circumstances and relationships between the characters.

In completely believable fashion, each character represents juxtapositions including:
criminal/ pious
charismatic/ fragile
ruthless/ altruistic
feeble/ warrior
arrogant blowhard/ stealthy expert
underdog/ iconoclast
victim/ sociopath

This film was stunning to look at, well executed, and extremely entertaining-- but I think there is a message that Goddard conveys about the present state of politics and relationships in America. And in ourselves. As human beings, each of us possesses the potential for great harm and suffering in equal amounts generosity and joy. Fear, regret, shame, greed, and insecurity can lead to devastating destruction of lives, but honesty, acceptance, communication, and even protest can foster optimism, growth, and peace. Archetypes are easy targets— as Americans, we often see each other as reds vs blues and we dig our heels in against one another because it is easier to see Others as bad guy enemies. But the truth is, each of us is multifaceted, and most of us are just doing the best we can to provide a sustainable standard of living for ourselves and our loved ones.

Bad Times at the El Royale shatters archetypes as Goddard reveals the complexity and simplicity of our layers— strangely, we are all the same in that we are different.

So, yeah. This one’s in my library. Recommended.

I bought this when I was drunk for 5 dollars on Amazon Prime.
This was a really interesting and strange movie. Cool story and well-acted.
Special shout out to Jeff Bridges. Now, Bridges was a really good actor when he was younger- been in all kinds of movies, but boy has he gotten better with age. The scene where he recounts how his Alzheimer's is affecting him is so deep and personal and touching- it was a masterclass of acting. What a gem just to witness that, the movie was worth the 5 just for that scene. An easy buy for any collection.

I saw Bad Times at the El Royale after an hour long power-nap after an 8 hour overnight shift and never did my eyes close longer than absolutely necessary. Clocking in at about 2 hours and 20 minutes, El Royale goes by surprisingly fast and has great pacing. I had only seen the original trailer, so I had only the notion that some stuff goes down at a neon themed hotel and I'm glad I didn't learn anything more before I saw it. Royale has some mysteries that come to unexpected ends and some legitimately shocking twists. The visuals were great and the soundtrack does a great job at juxtaposing opposite emotions in scenes. The entire cast was great, which is surprising because I hate it when John Hamm does accents, but every actor was stellar. The one issue I have it the wildly inconsistent tone. We whip from drama to action to melodrama to thriller to vague comedy and back to drama over and over again. With the constant flashbacks and change of focus, it each new scene did keep me on my toes unsure of what emotion the next scene was going to attack, but I got emotional whiplash from the constant tonal shifts. I was originally attracted to Royale because of its neon color palette and while the entire movie feels pretty "neon" it's a surprisingly dark movie. Bad Times at the El Royale is going to be one of those films that people will discover 3 or 4 years from now and really appreciate, but the severe lack of marketing is really depriving audiences of a great movie. There's some depth if your one of those that likes to pick apart and analyze everything, but its superficial level was more than enough for me. It sill looks beautiful on Blu-Ray, so I'm really hoping it eventually gets the credit it deserves, or at the very least, a little attention. An incredibly enjoyable case of emotional whiplash

By "promised" I mean, of course, by the trailer. The trailer isn't actually deceptive, just misleading.
A bunch of people come together and interact at a hotel built with one side in California and the other in Nevada. The State Line literally runs right down the middle of the lobby, and is clearly visible.
Each has a story, which I am not going to go into. The stories intersect. New players arrive and things take a nasty turn. There is a resolution.
As an experience, it /is/ reminiscent of Tarantino but, for me, that is not necessarily a good thing. Were this a Tarantino, I would say that it is not as bad as some but not nearly as good as others. Watching it is not as tedious as watching /Glengarry Glenn Ross/ with lots of added violence, but not as good as a spaghetti western either.
Still, if it intrigues you, you might enjoy it more than I did. You might even enjoy it a lot, as it is quite well done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente película y muy buenas actuaciones.
