How did you come up with the idea for this product?

When Ronald Ro had his first child, he, like many other parents, found out that his baby was suffering from eczema. After many frustrating months of research and trying a seemingly endless number of strategies, he realized that his baby girl’s suffering was closely linked to the quality of the air around her. What he also realized was that there weren’t any products available that could help him understand what was in her air and how he could make her more comfortable. Using his engineering background Ron decided to build a device that could track chemicals and toxins in the air. He connected with his close friend Kevin Cho and they built the first Awair… for his daughter.

Product Description

Do you know what's in the air you're breathing? Truth is, indoor air can be more polluted than outside, affecting allergies, asthma, eczema, sleep, and much more. Awair Glow tracks toxins and chemicals in your air and gives you personalized tips to help you stay safe and healthy. Glow plugs directly into the wall and can also turn on your “non-smart” devices the moment your air quality drops (or at certain times throughout the day). Glow covers up to 1,000 sq ft and works with iPhone iOS (8 or later) and Android (Jelly Bean 4.3 or later).

Doesn't actually work.
1 Star
Doesn't actually work.
Great concept, but it doesn't actually work. It operates per manual for some weeks, then it starts a mode where the temperature goes to 32ºF and the humidity to 0%, and when you turn the plug outlet on, the plug outlet shuts back off in only a second, so even if you manually instruct the Awair outlet to turn on the device that's attached, the Awair will shut off its outlet again, requiring you to access the Awair Glow device where you have it plugged in and unplug it, wait, and plug it back in. Since it automatically turns on the Glow status light, you also have to wait for the Glow to restart fully, so that you can select the status light to be off again. This is probably some type of hardware error. I wonder if their software could reboot to clear it; if so, then it's more likely some type of software error. However, there is no reboot function in the Awair app on iPad, so as far as I can tell, it is a hardware error. Either way, their software team hasn't responded with any bug fixes to me reporting this issue to them.Their support staff started a ticket into the matter, and it seemed like they were going to research it with me, but their ticket provider never let me log in to read the ticket (their ticket web site is faulty; I tried 6 browsers on 3 computers to log in, and none worked). I received an email telling me there was a status update on the ticket, but could not see the status update. I emailed them back asking them to tell me what was in the response, and their support staff seemed uninterested in letting me read the response to the ticket, referring me to go to the inoperative ticket web site, so even if part of their staff seemed like it might be interested in solving the problem (which I don't actually know since I never read the response), not all of them wanted to solve it.Awair requires you to have a login to a server where they store your personal data, rather than having local management (entirely in your own home). There is no local management option; it requires public Internet access. I don't want a device that sends any information outside of my home at all; everything should be managed locally.Even when the Awair Glow is working, they don't allow you to set a specific level for triggering the plug outlet; you can only select general levels, and their preselected levels are unworkable. I found my headaches do go away around 775ppm CO2, but their setting levels are only 1000ppm, 1500ppm, 2000ppm, etc.; there is no way to set 775ppm, 600ppm, 500ppm, or any other specific number. Also, the ppb chemicals in my room never seems to go below 600ppb, yet their setup only allows the trigger levels of 345ppb, then 849ppb; there's no way to set it to a specific number either. I'd rather set it to 150ppb above my average level so that it can respond to high chemical counts but doesn't have a useless setting that just keeps it on infinitely or never.According to other reviews, those numbers seem uncalibrated, so the poor preselected levels they offer are even less sensible. I can attest that the chemicals numbers are suspiciously inaccurate according to its own records (when I first plug in the Glow device, the numbers are unusually low, then they stay high after a while no matter what). So, if they ever fix the hardware error, I don't recommend their product because their software problems are too extreme. Their product design and production went through a lot of the steps necessary to do it right, but didn't actually do it right at any of those steps, so the product isn't OK.Just to make sure I didn't have a lemon, I returned my first Awair Glow, but the second one failed in the same way as well; I attached a screenshot of its status when it is failed.Note that I did not have the configuration usability problems that many other users have, because I was born in the Internet age and know how to use a computer. Sorry to those who refuse to learn computer stuff, and yes I acknowledge that most computer stuff user interfaces suck even though they design them to be easy for a 1 year old baby to use (i.e., not useful for adults), but that wasn't my problem with this product.
