A. Initial Setup. Very Simple.
Setup was a quick 3 step process. After downloading the app and pairing my ac , I was able to turn on my ac immediately.
B. Alexa Integration. Mega Frustrating.
Never try this. This is perhaps the worst alexa integration I’ve experienced. I’ve already integrated dozens of Philips Hue bulbs and TPlink smart plugs with ease but not Ambi Climate.
Here are my observations :
1. Controlling Ambi via Echo Show is almost impossible. Any voice command did not work. I configured ambi in the “Kitchen”. So whenever I say “ Alexa, ask Ambi to on ac in the kitchen”. Alexa’a replies are ;
“Sorry I didn’t find the c in the kitchen” or
“sorry I didnt find the a in the kitchen” or
“Sorry I didnt find the ac in the kitchen”
2. The key word “ask ambi” is too long. It would be simpler if I could just utter “ Alexa, turn on ac”
C. Verdict. If you don’t plan to use Echo, this should be ok. However if you are like me who wants to centralize all smart home devices via echo, DO NOT BUY THIS.
Purchase sensibo instead
The Ambi Climate makes this so much better. The setup was a little weird and I had to get a service rep involved to get a good remote setting on the app, but it was reasonable to do that and they answered promptly within one business day. Then I had to go through the learning process where I told it when I was too warm or too cool, and now I feel like I barely have to interact with it, which is perfect. I see that it is making good, mild corrections to keep the temperature comfortable. I'm in the early winter now, so I'll update the review for spring and summer when I get the chance, but I'm very pleased so far. This is how my heat pump should work to start with!
-----update late spring 2020-----
I found that I really enjoyed the temperature control mode better when I know that I'm going to be sticking with heating or cooling. It seems a little bit more even. With comfort mode, the temperature would oscillate a little bit go a little bit too warm, and then go a little bit too cool. However, in the spring, comfort mode has worked very well. It will switch between heating and cooling so that I can avoid having to take on that task. My wife is at home all day and she doesn't want to be fiddling with the heat pump, and the comfort mode really keeps her comfortable.
1) In A.I. mode, the user has to select ONE fan speed (Auto, Quiet, Low, Medium, High, etc). If this was truly intelligent, the system would set the speed. This has resulted in higher energy bills.
2) Following #1, the A.I. will set your temperature to the highest setting possible if the room is 'Freezing.' While it somewhat makes sense, the way I would do it manually is setting a temperature such as 68 degrees (instead of 86 degrees). I fear this is also a reason for higher electric bills (and you would think it would put extra stress on the unit).
3) That all said, wouldn't it be great if you could simply schedule 7 days a week? You can but only in Comfort / A.I. mode. Therefore, if that mode is not working for you, it doesn't allow you to set it in Manual mode (where after using our units for a few years, I know best).
I've contacted support about all of the above and there are plans to address #3.
PREVIOUS REVIEW:
I have split AC/heat units in my apartment and just purchased an Ambi Climate 2. Setup was very easy and app seems pretty intuitive.
My biggest pain point with dumb remotes is you have 3 major variables (temperature, mode, fan speed) which contributes to the room temperature- so reaching a balanced/consistent setting is near impossible. Also, factory automatic modes can blow cold air in dead of winter. Then you have programming which is extremely mind-numbing on a 2" display with icons you've never seen before.
After only a few hours of using Ambi's Comfort mode, I'm actually comfortable and don't have to think about what permutation of settings are on. Letting it know when I'm too cold, warm, and just right is dead easy. Programming custom schedules and behaviors is also as simple as it gets. And getting my wife setup on her own account / sharing the same units only took a minute.
I'm still in the early-stages and it's winter here, but hoping it's smart enough to detect when to use the fan if outside air temperature is cool vs AC cooling in the spring/summer- that would be a huge money saver! Also hoping for HomeKit support in the future.
Only complaint so far is it's not the easiest to place given the shape. I don't really want it in plain view so would be nice to have a flat side and adhesive for wall mounts, behind dressers, etc.
