Adendum: I've now had this case for over a month now and am even happier with it than when I first got it. I must reiterate that the keyboard is VERY comfortable to use for even long periods of time. The hinge, which is magnetic, is unbelievably strong and never feels flimsy. The backlighting just couldn't be any better. My wife even remarked that the additional weight actually makes the whole iPad/case package feel more solid, not more cumbersome. Third party lightning cables have plenty of room to plug into the iPad without removing it from the case. The buttons for power and volume are a bit stiff, but work fine. Zagg seems to have thought of everything with this particular unit. I just couldn't be happier, even though it's quite an expensive investment.
ONE YEAR LATER... Still love the keyboard... it worked perfectly but the hinge loosened up to the point where the iPad flopped around a bit. I put Zagg's Customer Service department to the test. I was out of warranty by about one month. When I called them to discuss the issue, they post-dated my purchase date by six months so that my keyboard was now back in warranty. They sent me a brand new one (no charge) and emailed me a UPS label to send the old keyboard back... again no charge. The new one is absolutely perfect. I'm even happier than I was a year ago.
First impressions: Excellent key layout and spacing, setup took under 5 minutes, battery drain excellent – I see ~15% drain/day on 2hrs of typing + 3hrs of reading.
Thoughts:
• The backlight (white color) is excellent. There are NOT multiple backlights colors. I spoke to Zagg Cust Support, and those keyboards were discontinued approx 6 months ago, due to customer complaints of excessive battery drain. I alerted them to Amazon’s listing (as of today) still showing “multiple switchable colors” for backlights but alas seems Amazon hasn’t update.
• Zagg’s website for this same keyboard doesn’t mention multiple backlights colors, but does show the keyboard with a blue backlights in some (not all) photos. Misleading.
• To be clear: the only backlights color is white. It’s excellent. Bright enough to see in even brighter conditions, but not so harsh to hurt eyes in total darkness.
• Key spacing excellent. Tighter than an 11” MacBook, but completely useable – even enjoyable – for extended periods of time.
• The iPad case has firm buttons – power & volume don’t get pressed accidentally, a worry if you carry the iPad around a lot, as a case would imply. No concerns here.
• The iPad case has a “lip” that seals around the front. Non-intrusive, it actually holds the case tightly and iPad in place on the keyboard, but serves the great purpose of letting me lay the iPad on its face (screen down) on a table and not freak out I’ve scratched the screen – the “lip” creates a gap between the iPad and any surface.
• The iPad case isn’t “waterproof”, but it covers enough of the iPad that any “spill” worries are gone. I used it on a plane w/ drink sitting next to case and for the first time, wasn’t worried that a drink spill would hurt the iPad.
• The iPad DOES’T MOVE as you type. The hinge is that tight. Amazing. The downside is you feel like you’re going to break the hinge when you open the case. I don’t think I could pry it open w/ my fingers alone sans iPad sitting in it, in fact. It’s that good. It also stops at something near 135degrees (90deg is a right angle, 180deg is like an open book laying flat). I think the hinge opening to a certain point (which is farther than I even need) and stopping is good – the cases I’ve had before that could open further meant the screen wobbled a little as you typed. Even a little wobble I find dizzying, this has none.
• All keys function perfectly. Recommend updating to latest version of iOS as remember the keyboard can only function as well as the software will let it.
• Secret tip: Press and hold the “Cmd” key for 2seconds, in any app a grey box appears on screen, for as long as you hold that key, showing al the keyboard shortcuts. I almost never need to touch the screen, even switching between apps. This only works in iOS 9 (for me, I saw it in iOS 9.2, and running 9.3 now)
• On the keyboard shortcuts: 9to5mac wrote an article listing the most common ones. I don’t think I can link to other sites, but I’d say that’s a good list, or just search the web. Or really, buy the keyboard and press Cmd and just watch the magic yourself.
The case is heavy, but because the iPad can be detached and folded shut everything is protected I no longer need a case to keep the screen (protector) from getting scratched or fluff on, and most of the time I use it thus. The keyboard is great to type on and the stand works in all three modes as you would expect. Battery life is great, and after four month I still have not needed to charge it.
There is a non rugged version which I have not tried, but I am supremely happy with this. It doesn't work with tempered glass protectors, unless you are okay with the pressure from the rubber edges causing bubbles (which I was not), but again, the screen is always well protected if you close the case.
All ports are accessible, and buttons responsive. The broad edge for the bezel means the swipe in actions work flawless unlike other heavy duty cases. The price did seem steep, but it's definitely is adding the value to my iPad, especially since I can still use it like an iPad, or as a laptop. The screen/iPad never separates unless you intend it with strong magnets holding things together. Only criticism: no ESC key, which makes using vi on linux consoles a bit more daunting, but with the right ssh client (Prompt for instance) that works okay too. Otherwise the keyboard is fantastic.
Fantastic case, really happy with it.

Things I really like:
1. The Keyboard works well.
2. It did not take me long to become proficient at typing with it. ( a few days)
3. The cases are soundly connected however they are still seperable.
4. When separated the case for the iPad/screen doesn't add a great deal of bulk but still provides a reasonable amount of protection. (I've dropped it a few times with no damage)
5. I use the magnets meant to hold the screen and keyboard together as a way of hanging the iPad around my house hands free. I really like this feature, however, I do this at my own risk as you would if you were to do the same.
6. When I'm out I like to use the keyboard and screen separated from each other purely for comfort.
Things to be aware of but are not detrimental for me.
1. It does occasionally (once or twice a week) have some kind of hiccup were it's still connected and the home button works but the rest of the keys don't respond.
I like this product and I'm really glad I got it. It has really increased the versatility of my iPad and made it my main device for most of my work and leisure.
2. Some may find it bulky, however I take comfort in its bulk.
