Good camera... once it is set up.

Good camera... once it is set up.
I have this camera placed inside a building in another state. Easy to install.Video and pictures are sharp (day and night). FOV is nice. Motion detection triggers nicely with low false alarm rate (so far). Detection range is as advertised. Pan and tilt control works, although it is a bit jumpy and I suspect that will be the first feature to experience a failure. One camera pan motor/gearing is already sticky and troublesome, but it's in a position where I don't need to pan, anyway.Two-way audio feature works nicely, although it has a tendency to develop an audio feedback loop if you actually try to converse with someone through the camera. The audio alarm is loud enough to warn away an intruder, but not loud enough to be heard from outside. The instructions are fairly clear and the registration process is clever, but the process did not go as easily as the instructions make it sound. It took me several hours to get these cameras (and a REOLINK Argus PT) properly configured and working on the local WiFi network. But once I did, camera control and settings, live-stream, and playback over the local network all worked from both the REOLINK phone app and laptop software. And I immediately began receiving e-mails with snapshots when a camera was triggered.I have not yet correctly configured the cameras and/or my router to permit live-stream or playback/download over the internet. Saving that for another day. But REOLINK technical support has been responsive and polite with every call and e-mail, so far.

A quick background on me. I am an IT professional of almost 20 years with expertise in networking, hardware and support. I provide managed IT services to my customers and have for over 10 years in my own business. There is a current trend for automation and security systems and I have recently done a ton of research on these items. With extensive research on security cameras. There are many many different manufacturers and systems out there so choose wisely.
Reolink - I applied to be a dealer with Reolink as I found their pricing very very competitive and their products looked well built and feature rich, comparable to higher priced manufacturers. I was contacted practically immediately by them and spoke with them over the phone. And was set up. But I digress a bit...even though I am a dealer at this time, I was not when I ordered this camera. On to the review.
As expected, this came within 2 days. All items were in the box as stated.and expected, not going to get into the contents but item was well packaged and shipped fast.
Instructions were clear and setup was simple and to the point. You will need to have a barcode scanner on you phone in order to establish a wifi connection but I didn't find that a big deal. If you follow the instructions as written you should have no problems.
First I tested PTZ functions on network, meaning I was on my local network at my house. All functions worked awesome. Pan, tilt and zoom were all excellent. I absolutely love the 2 way audio and video is fantastic. The range is very good too. I can say I set the unit approximately 75 feet from my router and the connection was still great. I really have nothing negative to say about this.
Externally, meaning I was at WalMart and decided to test the functionality of the camera. It literally worked as it did if I was standing inside my house. No issues, no problems connecting. This was not even on wifi, it was on my cell phones data. Very impressed.
So far I have not had to charge/change the batteries and I have had it running for about 2 weeks straight now.
If there was anything I could say about it is it would be nice if it had wifi 5G connectivity but this is definitely not a deal breaker.

I bought this to place and keep an eye on the inside of our chicken coop, and it worked fine for a few weeks. I want to make clear that this was mounted in a clean, dry spot, away from where the chickens could get at it, so it didn't take any particular abuse. After it stopped working, I changed the batteries and did a factory reset, only to discover that the camera wouldn't connect to the Reolink app or my home wifi network. Tech support by Reolink was limited to email (their HQ is in Hong Kong), but they were responsive and, after several back-and-forth troubleshooting messages (in one of which they asked me to record and send a video of my attempts to get the camera online), they agreed that the unit seemed defective and told me to return it to Amazon, which I did. I was really disappointed, as this seemed to be the perfect solution to my situation. However, it seems clear that the product wasn't really ready for prime time--either in terms of build quality or just reliability of the chipset. Maybe I'll try again with the next generation of this or a competitor's product. Buy at your own risk.

In short, be prepared to waste a lot of time getting camera configured on your WiFi, and be prepared to pay a lot more for batteries and a battery charger. Also, you MUST have a smartphone and download their app to do ANYTHING with this camera.

Setup was NOT easy (see below for what finally worked in my case). It was designed to be extremely simple, but the camera had a terrible time recognizing the QR code generated in the app to get it configured on WiFi. I spent several hours on this last step before it finally worked. Pain in the ....so based on setup, I'd give 0 stars.

Once the WiFi worked, it was brilliant. Just as advertised, it records high quality video whenever the motion sensor detects movement. Accessing recorded video is easy on the same network, AND from outside the home. Every recording generates a push message letting me know there's been new activity. So once it's working, I'd rate it 4.5 stars.

Ah, but then the batteries....these are not your typical AA, AAA, or 9v batteries. And the unit CANNOT be powered by any means other than batteries. Shame on me for not reading all the details...I assumed the batteries shipped with the camera were rechargeable; not the case. So yes, you will need to either continue buying new batteries (again, not typical batteries), or you'll need to buy a couple sets of rechargeable batteries along with a charger. I nearly blew up my new charger when I put their batteries into it. Yes, my fault for not reading the material more closely, but shame on them for not shipping with rechargeable batteries. So that's more $. Had they shipped with rechargeable, I might have looked past the horrible setup experience and rated this device 4 stars. But no, the best u can give them is 3 stars.

What Finally Worked:
After spending more than 2 HOURS trying different ideas, the ONLY SOLUTION was:

1) Take a screenshot of the QR code on my phone (after entering WiFi credentials)
2) CLOSE the ReoLink app.
3) View the screen shot on my phone and enlarge it to the largest possible size without going past the edges and make sure phone is on it's brightest display level.
4) Put the camera ONLY 10cm AWAY FROM THE PHONE. Their instructions say 20cm, which NEVER worked.

In short, I needed to DOUBLE the size of the QR code and cut the distance between the camera and the phone by 50%.

Camera worked great for the first few weeks but after having it for 7 months it’s a headache. You have to reinstall it way to often. Now it will not hook up to my Wifi. Everything else works great on my router but this camera. WOULD NOT BUY AGAIN.
