This Microsoft keyboard works really well. For a thinn keyboard, the keys have a lot of travel, like a regular keyboard, and it feels right. The size seems to be the same as a full size board. The split in the middle does take some getting used to, of course, if you are used to stretching across to reach the T, Y, or U keys, but then again, it's not hard to train out of it. I did learn typing way, way, way back in junior high school, and I have some familiarity with "proper" typing.
What I really like is when paired with the Samsung tablet, I can wake it up with a key press and start typing which is handy. I don't know if all tablets have the functionality. I also haven't paired it with more than one device. The keyboard folds up nice and small and can fit in a small bag or for women, a purse.
The downside, and I knew this when I bought it so I didn't knick a star, is that since it's folding, you need a stable surface to work on. You can't rest it on your lap with out a solid surface. That makes using it at conferences or on planes (only when I get upgraded to 1st!) with split tables impossible.
Android users: One thing I noticed when I use Swiftkey as my soft keyboard I had to disable it when using the Microsft keyboard. There is a wierd interaction where the cursor will jump around the page so you start typing one place and next thing you know, you're typing somewhere else. Very frustrating. It's an issue with Android and/or Swiftkey since it doesn't happen with the stock soft-keyboard.
I use my iPad Air2 mostly for personal use and more rarely for work (note taking during meetings and business conferences). Because I would only rarely use a keyboard, I didn't want a keyboard case that would permanently add bulk to my iPad. This is a great alternative: a keyboard that's small and light enough to toss into a bag and use only when you need it.
Definitely easier to use if you're a good typist. I realized that I had some idiosyncratic typing habits (would use my right index finger to reach the "B" key, but it's on the left side of this split keyboard). So in that sense, if you just want to type, it would be irritating. However, I'm OK with the compromise.
Some pros: dedicated device switching buttons, volume controls and mute, rewind/forward/play/pause buttons, lock button, "search" button, home keys. Battery life seems to be as good as advertised. I've only charged it once since I purchased it a few weeks ago.
Some cons: can't use in your lap - needs to be on a flat surface. Some might find keyboard spacing and the gap in the middle irritating. No dedicated "Fn" keys - there's a combined "Fn / Cmd" button that, presumably, would be used with the number keys. I don't use these anyway, so it's not an issue for me.
So after upgrading to a Samsung Galaxy S7, I no longer have the issue of the keyboard not reconnecting to Android devices. Makes me thing it was something on Samsung's/Android's end regarding connectivity after initial pairing. I know Marshmallow came out recently, but I didn't not try it on my S6 edge with Marshmallow.
***ORIGINAL REVIEW***
I was very excited about this keyboard from the moment I saw the video from Microsoft. I liked the portability of the keyboard without sacrificing physical keys. Overall, the build of the keyboard is great. It's a sleek design and has similar physical keys of the Type Cover that Microsoft has for their Surface lines. It's not full-size keys, but my time with various keyboards and (gasp!) netbooks allows me to touch type fairly easily. The split to accommodate the foldability doesn't affect me as it's right at the point where my two hands would split anyway; all the keys are on the correct hand side. It pairs very easily with my Lenovo Yoga 2 8-inch tablet with Windows 10, which is what I mainly bought this for. It pairs well with my Samsung S6 edge...initially.
The biggest issue of this keyboard is that it won't remember that I paired it with my S6 edge. Reading various reviews and comments here, it appears that this is a real issue with reconnecting with Android devices. I just tried calling Microsoft, but they are referring me to Samsung for now. I'll try to send an email to Samsung to see if there's anything they can do software wise on the bluetooth side. If anybody out there has successfully paired and reconnected with their Android device, let me know.
Top reviews from other countries
It also connects to two devices, for either Windows, Android, or Apple devices. It has working keyboard shortcuts for both Windows and Apple (haven't tested Android).
There was a slight adjustment period as there is an empty space at the fold dividing the keyboard in half, but I'm able to type just as fast as I could on my other keyboards within a couple hours of using it.
The only downside is that there isn't a light to tell you the battery level and when it's fully charged when plugged in. When I first received it, I had to charge it for a couple hours to have it charged completely, but the battery is supposed to last for 6 months before needing a re-charge.
PROS:
- Extremely thin when folded. Looks like a very think book. Looks great open or closed on your desk.
- Lays flat when open! Many centre-hinged foldable keyboards do not lay perfectly flat. And that drives me crazy.
- Turns on/off simply by opening and closing the keyboard. This is great. No fiddling with power switches!
- Pairs with two devices. This is innovative and so useful! I pair it with my iPad and iPhone. Pressing a key switches between the two instantly. Genius.
- Not bad key feel. For such a thin keyboard, the key travel is as good (if not better) than that of my Dell XPS 15 (which uses the new low-travel keys, like the new Macbook, that I dislike).
CONS:
- Keys are a bit tight, but not too bad. I keep hitting Caps Lock by accident. The weird key placement caused by the center spit didn't affect me. But you do get used to it after only a couple of hours.
- The covers (when folded) always looks dirty, as it picks up gunk from the surface of your desk. But it's easy to wipe off.
- It's a bit pricey--I would've really hesitated paying the $99 regular price. At $75, it's an easier buy for sure.
This keyboard is also supposed to be spill resistant, but I didn't test that. Overall, this keyboard exudes a feel of quality that you do not get with cheaper China keyboards for Aliexpress or elsewhere.
