Heart Rate Training
Monitor your all day heart rate without needing a chest strap, using Garmin’s Elevate wrist heart rate technology. It helps you gauge your effort for cardio workouts and because it’s tracking your heart rate provides more accurate calories burned information.
Taking the stairs is harder, vívosmart HR will track that extra effort thanks to an integrated barometric altimeter. It will also measure activity intensity through Intensity Minutes, so users can then monitor their progress against weekly goals.
Garmin Connect
vívosmart HR automatically syncs with your smartphone throughout the day to save your stats to our free online community. Simply download Garmin Connect Mobile to your phone or log on to Garmin Connect via your desktop, where you can save, plan and share your activity and beat yesterday in your daily step count. Connect with other users to challenge and compete. For detailed calorie tracking, you can create an account at MyFitnessPal and link it to your Garmin Connect account. This allows you to compare calories consumed to total calories burned, which vívosmart HR records throughout the day.

In the app there's not a section for dance or Performing Arts. I'm not quite sure what would be the equivalent in the preset activities. Maybe outside of cardio not quite sure I haven't played around with the app that long. I've only used it for 2 days.
It was fairly easy to set up as long as you follow the sequence. If you have patience it will work out for you. So no it's not going to sync up with in 45 seconds or less. Straight out the box it's going to come with a dead battery. It's going to take about three to five minutes for the actually charge and the screen come on consistently. It takes about an hour and a half worth of charge to full power. During this time you can download the app from the App Store, and pair your device accordingly. The process takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The reason for that is it's going to make you set up an account and it asked you some decent questions. I'm not quite sure what the desktop setup would be like but according to setting up via phone or mobile device it's going to take you about 10 to 15 minutes.
Also depending on your connectivity if you lose Bluetooth signal, do you may add an extra one two three minutes on to this time. So don't be frustrated getting it out the box. This is a Garmin device. In all of my years of experience, Garmin does take a little longer to set up but it's well worth it.
My band was regular fit, I don't have a lot of extra length hanging around once I fastened it. It's not super tight and it hasn't left a mark on my skin. It's actually really comfortable. I'm not quite sure what the other reviews were saying how it is uncomfortable are leaving marks. But for me it's actually pretty fine. It's no different than wearing a regular watch. There's no extra pressure. I have other bracelets on around it and it doesn't rub. I even had a long sleeve tight shirt on yesterday and there was no additional pressure.
I did buy a protective screen for it but I have not put it on yet I wanted to see how the device held up over 48 hours. That's far as it's held up very well. With the placement on my dominant hand it's not cumbersome.
Even want the vibration notification to move or when you get a message it's not overpowering or disturbing. It's no different than if you had your phone in your pocket on vibrate.
For Sleep purposes you do have to go in and program the hours and what you think you're going to sleep so it can monitor your sleep activity. However if you do sleep longer than that it will just calculate whatever it is into a resting position. So it doesn't automatically know if you're asleep or if you're just sitting down.
I will monitor my use with the watch. I will update this accordingly if things change. But I do highly recommend this for people who want to have a general idea of what their Fitness is. It actually makes me feel a lot better about myself when I am at rest/ non overall physical activity, which helps de-stress my mindset. It did pick up by steps accurately when I was walking around from place to place. Buy it doesn't count when i go up ans down stairs as it should. I live upstairs so i go up and down stairs often.
When I do a strenuous activity I will check the monitoring then to see how accurate it is but if you're looking to just get an overall perspective, don't want something that's super Gotti or noticeable on your wrist, an easy-to-follow information I would suggest this watch.
From time to time you can always hit the sync button if you haven't open the app for a while. But it does auto sync on its own every so often.
I have showered and washed my hands fequently since the purchase it is waterproof. In the shower i noticed The running water caused if to cycle through The fitness options, but it was no biggie. The display isn't always on all the time but whenever there's a change of life or I tap it it comes on. Which is good for battery for Life preservation.
If you are able to I would probably get an additional band. As the regular size is for small-to-medium wrist. I have a fairly medium size wrist. I can see myself getting a larger band in the future if it poses a problem but it's okay.
I like that it breaks calories burned down into inactive and active calories. Your inactive calories burned are just what your body uses daily to survive. These will be the same every day, as long as you remain the same weight. They're going to gradually drop if you lose.
You can set your own step goals, but I find theVivosmart does a great job of judging what you're doing now and encouraging you to slowly increase.
I did a lot of research before choosing the Vivosmar HR. I not only read tons of personal reviews, but also went to numerous sites where devices had been compared and studied for accuracy. This device was consistently listed as one of the most accurate for heart rate and steps/distance. My own testing on distance, using GPS on my phone, shows that it is accurate to within a tenth of a mile over several miles of hiking or walking. This is after inputting my own stride length into the phone app. I took multiple measurements and averaged them.
It's not the prettiest, but it's not as obnoxious as I feared either. I have a fairly small wrist at 6.5" and the fit is fine. It took some getting used to, but I was never able to get comfortable wearing a watch way back before cell phones either. I initially swapped wrists a couple of times a day, but am now comfortable enough to leave it on one most of the time.
Some tips, hints and thoughts:
Watch YouTube reviews to get a good idea of all the things you can do and how to use the device and app. Play with both the device and the phone app. It took me a week or so before I discovered everything they both could do. There's more information there then you may originally realize!
Even if you only plan to use the phone app (like me) you need to sync it initially with your computer and make sure the correct time zone is chosen there. Even though my time zone defaulted correctly I still had to log in and connect the device to the computer once. If you don't, despite the time on Vivosmart and your phone matching, the time on your activities may well be wrong. This initially resulted in my evening walks being recorded as occurring the next day.
Wear it just above your wrist bone with a snug fit. I tighten it one hole before an activity/exercises to get the most accurate heart rate recording when it really matters. Regular heart rate tracking is every few minutes, I believe. During activities it changes to continuous.
Your choices for activities are run, cardio and other. Run works just fine for walks and hikes. If you do your walking on a treadmill make sure you are swinging your arms, not holding on, or steps and distance may be inaccurate. An elliptical would be better set as cardio. I use the cardio setting for yoga, active stretching routines, minor exercises and hula hooping. (If you're wanting a fun, low impact exercise, do some research and give it a try! It really works muscles as well.)
Probably the least accurate measurement is flights of stairs climbed and descended. I say this from my experience as well as that of others. I live in a one story house and don't have regular access to stairs. However, after certain hikes or walks it may show a few flights up or down. Usually up. This is because it can't differentiate between steep hills and stairs. This is no problem for me and I enjoy seeing a few flights listed as I know I've pushed hard up some brutal hills. I can't personally say how accurate it is on actual flights of stairs, but have read it's better at recording climbed stairs than it is at descents.
This is a general purpose device. It's perfect for me, but if you're a serious biker, weight lifter, etc. you might be better served with something more exercise specific. Without GPS, it's not going to be able to track distance accurately on a bike, just calories based on heart rate.
It does occasionally lose it's sync with my phone. The easiest way to fix this is to just turn Bluetooth off and then back on on my phone. That fixes it every time for me.
The sleep tracking is pretty good, but has limitations. If you nap in the middle of the day, it's not going to know that's sleep, just inactivity. You can manually fix this however. As long as your sleep is reasonably near the time frame you have set, it does a pretty good job. The only issue I've had is it occasionally had me falling asleep early if I'm a blob in front of the tv, with no activity at all, before bed.
Overall, the Vivosmart HR, is a great device! I've tried to point out where it may fall short, as nothing is going to be perfect. However, it does everything I'm looking for and does so more accurately than many others. If you're looking for a general purpose activity tracker and some extra motivation I really don't think it can't be beat.
ETA: I keep seeing it mentioned that the backlight is too dim in the dark and can't be changed. I don't know if it's a recent update, but it can easily be changed. Press the button on the device and then scroll to the cog wheel for settings. One of your options will be Display Preferences and the first of those is Backlight Brightness. The default is quite low and you can easily increase a great deal if desired.
