First the bad: You have to charge it every day. You obviously know what you're getting into when you are buying a smartwatch, but having one more thing to charge daily is not the best thing. It gets me through the day as long as I don't install apps or updates. And the power saver mode is pretty great -about 1% discharge per hour. Those things, I expected. But the mic, in my experience, is horribly useless because the voice response has way too much delay and 'Ok Google' almost always triggers my phone first.
Disabling that feature -which I read online- worked wonders for me. The battery life is better, there is far less lag and the watch is way more responsive. I have seen this improvement also when I received the H update.
The good, for me firstly, is the design. This watch is gorgeous. I am all for metal straps so maybe this may be a little bit biased but I love how it looks on my wrist. It's not too big or too thick; if the screen is not noticed it has no difference from a regular watch. The buttons are also great and very satisfying to press. The crown is also great but in certain third-party apps, you cannot use it to scroll, which obviously is not the watch's fault. There are a lot of apps on the Play Store, I was especially shocked when I could use the watch as my phone camera's viewfinder/remote shutter and when I used the keyboard to type. I thought it would be too difficult but it's way better than what I expected. Fossil included a lot of watch faces and a lot of them are pretty good. The watch GPS is usually pretty accurate and it can receive notifications from the phone even when Bluetooth is turned off, as long as the watch is connected to a Wi-Fi network. It charges in about 90 minutes which is good enough for me.
All in all, Fossil Explorist Gen 4 is a product that I am so happy with and an accessory that goes with everything. I think this watch and Skagen Falster 2 are the best-looking smartwatches in the market that looks less like a mini computer and more like an actual watch.

The good, it tracks your steps is prompt at delivering notifications, the NFC tap to pay works well, however it's hard to line your wrist up right with certain readers. The actual watch portion seems pretty indestructible, the band however is getting discolored (I got the brown leather band)
The inconvenient, ever since the update pushed around June/July 2020, when you get too far from your phone it disconnects which is to be expected but when it reconnects it pops up on your watch and phone saying it needs to be paired. This was happening a lot more even if you didn't walk away from the phone. This seems to be happening less and less as more updates get pushed through. The other issuebi noticed is battery life, if I charge it around 8hrs it will last a 16+ hr shift for me, however if I forget it on the charger one day the battery will barely make it through an 8 hr shift. I'm assuming if you catch it the second it hits 100% it will last a bit longer.
There really is nothing I would consider a deal breaker with this watch as of yet.
Just a heads up my review is completed based on comparisons I will make to my Fitbit Versa as well as my original Huawei Watch and previous standard Fossil watches I've owned.
Simply put, if you're a big watch fan (not even necessarily smart watch) just get it. The price is reasonable especially considering these are Fossil. if however you're looking for a smartwatch to like do more than just the basic stuff maybe this might not be the one for you
It's a pretty amazing watch with decent performance and pretty alright battery life.
So I'm not particularly amazing at writing reviews so what I'll do is just have a what's good and what's bad section with points.
What's Good
-The watch is absolutely beautiful and matches in with almost anything I wear
-The watch also seems to be pretty durable I mean it's even swim proof. I've literally gone to the beach with this watch on my wrist no issues whatsoever. I've had it for a month and there have been no scratches or dings anywhere and I wear it every single day.
-A lot of people have been complaining about the battery life on this thing but honestly I don't think it's that bad considering it's literally a flagship phone from 6 years ago on your wrist. I literally get anywhere between 15 hours to like a day-and-a-half depending on my usage and depending on whether or not I put in airplane mode. if you're like me and you just want a watch to be a watch sometimes and track your steps and your heart rate, leaving it in airplane mode can really stretch that battery life to like 2 days. However don't get me wrong receiving a lot of notifications every day, constantly changing music, constantly replying to messages on the watch and using the watch a lot ( I have 2 games on mine) really does impact battery life dramatically but I don't think it's that horrible.
-The screen is absolutely beautiful and bright hands down.
-The rotating crowns is just a pleasant thing to use like everyone should have that.
-The stock Fossil watch faces are just amazing and there's so many of them I've yet to download any third-party watch faces because I'm completely satisfied with what already comes with the watch as well as a customisation of all the watch faces
What's Bad
-I think the performances leaves a lot to be desired. If you're using this watch solely as a watch / fitness tracker / notification glancer thing, then performance won't really be an issue however once you get into more demanding tasks (which shouldn't even be that demanding) like for example changing music, scrolling through apps (even worst opening them) scrolling through a lot of notifications (like 15 or more) or checking your calendar events for the day ( I have a pretty big calendar though), scrolling and performance overall does get a bit laggy and buggy.
-Speaking of laggy and buggy I've noticed an issue with my watch not sure if it's with all watches but whenever I'm leaving the battery saving mode the watch literally freezes to the point where I press a button and I won't get a response or change in screen for even two minutes, literally. This also seems to happen whenever I put the watch to charge I'm assuming it's now updating apps in the background so that kind of takes away from like actual performance but this is really annoying sometimes and I really don't think that it's a good representation of the watch. This doesn't happen all the time however it's pretty rare.
- Okay this one really upset me because I'm a humongous Fossil fan and I've always admired their good build quality and products in general but the top button, it has a different feeling and texture from the bottom button for some strange reason. As in when it's pressed there's obviously a different feeling to both buttons. The rotating crown is perfect, it's fine, however the buttons above and below it, they're very different somehow. The top one feels almost as if it's broken (it works fine just feels stiff and broken) while the bottom one feels pretty normal and I've had this issue since day one. I thought that everyday use would kind of make the button feel more normal but one month in, I'm literally pressing it right now and it feels very different from the bottom button.
-Now something that might not necessarily be the watch's fault but it could literally just be the water where I am but I noticed that whenever I wash my hands for example or take a shower the silicone strap would develop a white buildup on it ( I'm thinking calcium or maybe chlorine I don't know) but why it's strange to me is that this has never happened to me with any of my other previous watches. So very strange
Overall I really love my fossil Gen 4 smartwatch I'm really upset that the Gen 5 came out less than a month after I bought it which was completely unexpected. Kind of wishing I could return this one then just get a Gen 5 (wink wink @ Fossil). It's a pretty amazing watch that leaves a bit to be desired and as I said if you're looking for an actual watch this is an amazing product!!!
However, if you're looking for a device to do more than just tell you the time, date, calories, heart rate and occasionally glance at a notification, if you're looking for anything more than that I don't think it's the watch for you. As an actual watch it's amazing the round face is amazing the watch faces are amazing.

Apart from the battery issues everything else seems to be fine but if you compare the features with any other watch in the market this phone doesn't have much features. The only reason you have to buy the watch is for show off since it looks classy.
