The Apple Smart Battery Case is expensive, but it is the best battery case for the iPhone XS / XS Max.The Apple Smart Battery Case has a two-celled battery system that offers roughly an additional 2700 Mah battery capacity. In real-world terms, it has effectively doubled the battery capacity of my iPhone in day to day use. I live in a city where I take public transportation to commute to work and back, and I have enjoyed not having to worry about running out of battery on my phone during my commute. The case will arrive dead because of federal regulations, so you will have to spend some time charging it before you use it.I didn't realize that the inside has a nice little felt lining, that will help prevent the case from scratching the glass iPhone. The case itself is unibody, so you have to bend back the top of the case to slide your phone into the dock. I like that system more than having two separate pieces that you have to slide on, however, I am a little nervous about its long term durability. The case itself is made out of a silicone-like material. It feels soft and it is really grippy. The black case, however, does pick up grease from your palm and fingertips and can look a little gross. I have seen that the white case gets really dirty, so you kind of have to pick your poison. I think the black one is probably better for most people. The buttons on the case are not my favorite. They are not as tactile as I would prefer. The back of the case has the Apple logo on the back, which I like. It is subtle, but signals that it is an Apple product. The actual case itself has a noticeable "rump" on the back. It isn't too big in my opinion, but it isn't little either. The rump size is just fine. The weight is just fine too. If I had the iPhone XS Max, I don't think I would get this case because it would probably make the phone heavier than I would prefer, but on the iPhone XS, I think the weight is still pretty manageable. You will notice the extra weight in your pocket though.Something I didn't know is that there is not a button to turn the battery case off or on. The way the case works is it keeps charging your phone until the case dies, then you can just use your phone. It's odd but in line with Apple's kind of minimal aesthetic. Part of the "smart" features of the case is that if you have the battery widget on your phone enabled, you can see how much battery on your phone case is left. Another smart feature is that if you charge the phone and case together, the lock screen will briefly show you the percentage of battery left on each device. There is a little light on the inside of the case that is orange when it is charging and green when it is full. The case itself is meant specifically from the iPhone XS, however, I tried it on an iPhone X and it worked fine. The only negative is that the speaker holes on the iPhone X are different from the ones on the iPhone XS, so if you use this case on an iPhone X, some of your speaker grill holes will be blocked.By far my least favorite thing about the Apple Smart Case is that it has a bit of a lip on the bottom of the case. This doesn't sound like it should be a big deal, but it gets in the way of some of the swipe up features on the phone. It can be kind of annoying. The case is capable of fast charging, but you have to buy the special lighting charging cable that is USB C to lightning. The case is capable of being charged wirelessly, however, I don't think it can actually wirelessly charge another item. That is kind of a bummer since Apple Airpods 2 case is capable of being charged wirelessly.I would recommend this case for anyone who isn't scared off by the high price tag and wants a battery case for their iPhone XS. The case is expensive, but because it is made by Apple, you get some cool extra features built in and don't have to worry about any sketchy battery situation.
I got this case because I wanted a battery case for my phone. I use my phone more since working from home and was running the battery down pretty far each day. I do use a wireless charger that does charge somewhat fast but due to needing to step away, etc. I still ran the phone down.
After receiving this case I was a little surprised by the heft. It was a little heavier than I expected. The one issue I found is I had to plug it in to a charge cable to get it charged initially. Once I did that, even running the case down, I have not had to do that unless I use it with CarPlay in my car. My only gripe with this initial setup is for the price it should have come with a cable. That's being a little cheap Apple.
I have had this now for a few months and I really do like the case. I got used to the heft and have found I most like it. I haven't liked to use my iPhone naked since the iphone 4 as the newer ones feel really light and slippery so they are always slipping in my head. This case resoled. that. Being a little wider this case resolved that and the silicon that Apple uses is nice and smooth. It will pick up grease from surfaces, etc. over time. A quick wipe with some dish soap and water on a cloth, followed by a wipe to clean that off makes it like new again. The battery life is great and I never have to worry about my phone. I have only had one issue with my phone getting real low but that was from trip out of town for 3 days and I forgot my cord. I still had 10% when I got back and I used my phone the whole time.
The gripes about the phone always charging are true but I don't mind it. It shows what it's charge is and if it's charging or not. The one thing is you have to be a little more careful putting it on a wireless charger. If you don't it either will not charge or it seems to not be able to charger properly and will charge extremely slowly. Just take a second to make sure it's somewhat centered and you'll be fine. The inside is soft so it doesn't scratch your phone and it's definitely a durable case. I have dropped and banged my phone a few times and not even a mark. Of course it's not waterproof but hopefully in the future Apple works on that for future iPhones.

I have bought several (4-5) off-brand charging cases for my iPhone over the past 2-3 years that have run about $30-$50 each. I loved the extra battery life, but the off-brands had issues that would result in them not lasting long. The biggest problem for me was the “this accessory is not supported” message that I would often get when plugging the phone with case into the charging cable, headphones, CarPlay in my car. So I would have to fiddle with the port plugging it in and out to try and get it to work. If that didn’t resolve the issue I would just have to take the phone out of the case. The charging port in every case I tried just wasn’t very durable and frequently taking the phone in and out of the case would wear it out or break it. This time I decided to spend more and get the charging case made by Apple. I’m so glad I did and wish I would have bit the bullet sooner. I don’t feel the Apple smart case is any heavier or bulkier than any other charging case I’ve tried. I love that I can see battery percentage of both the phone and the case on the Lock Screen. The ability to charge with a corded lightning charger or wirelessly is awesome. And the best thing? It works with all my gadgets that plug-in to the lightning port without that pesky “this accessory is not supported message.” It works with corded ear buds (with lightning adapter), CarPlay, my charging cable, etc. This means there’s no reason for me to take the case on and off! And even if I do have to take the case off for some reason, the charging case port is much sturdier than that of the off-brands.
