Generational Investment: Solid All-Around Great Mouse
I first decided to buy this back in 2012. At the time, I paid around $50 for it. In the US, that was and still is a lot of money for a mouse. Moreover, living in a country where $50 had double the purchasing power, buying it just seemed ludicrous. But after some research and advice from a tech-savvy acquaintance, I finally decided on going all in.Long story short: this is one of the best investments (not purchases, nor expenses) I have ever made.Short story long: At first, I kept thinking to myself I wasn't thinking clear, having spent over $50 for a laptop mouse. Over time, however, I came to enjoy the feel of it. Eventually, it become one with my palm.✔ Smooth, sleek with a left-side black glossy curve, anthracite gray matte finish on the body and rubberized right and left side grips, this thing looks awesome on any desk. It just oozes professionalism and it means business. It's simply the right size for my needs and I can fit it in my laptop backpack and take it anywhere I go. I've rarely used the laptop's touchpad ever since I've been using the M705. Which is great, because I hate using touchpads anyway.✔ It would have been interesting if the buttons and wheel sounded like James Brown laying down some soul music for your spreadsheet clicking, but acoustically, it pretty much sounds like any mouse.✔ Functionally, it packs a punch. You have your two standard left and right mouse buttons. The wheel acts as a button as well as a scroll wheel and is special for two reasons: not only does it allow side-scrolling (left-right), it also has a button underneath to allow for Quantum Scrolling (I just made that term up), by which you basically take the breaks off and zoom through feeds and timelines like you're a photon traveling through empty space. Using the the Logitech Smooth Scrolling Google Chrome extension is a nice touch to an otherwise choppy scrolling experience (see video). Now, things get even more interesting. On the left side are three customizable buttons. Two of them are obviously placed and can be used for things such as the "Back" and "Forward" buttons on your browser or other functions (see below). The third button is actually the lower part of the rubberized left side and is a very cool addition to a mouse's button arsenal (I use it to switch between windows/applications), all three requiring nothing more than a flick of the thumb. This mouse is very ergonomic and efficient.I must point out that apart from the left and right mouse buttons — which can be swapped for left-handed people, if you prefer it that way — all the other 6 buttons are fully customizable using the Logitech SetPoint software. Yes, you can use them for everything from application switching to document flipping, keystroke assignment and even application-specific settings. I'm looking at you, gamer, but I've also had it work with FL Studio 11 to create electronic music and help in simplifying complex tasks into a few clicks.✔ The battery life? Let me ask you something. Why do you think it's called the "Marathon Mouse"? Have no clue, do you? That's OK, I didn't either. 3 years and only 2 AA batteries later, I found out. Yes, almost 1000 days of power with only 2 AA batteries. You could even take one out, with the obvious halving of battery life, if you want it to be lighter or with a different center of gravity (again, I'm looking at you, gamer) but I prefer the heavier feel. The software even shows you how much juice you've got left. It uses so little energy that I keep almost depleted batteries from larger gadgets (like an electric shaver) and they still last several months in the mouse.✔ It has a neat little space inside the battery compartment for storing its receiver and since we're on the topic, it uses the small kind of receiver that is a Logitech Unifying receiver. This means with one receiver you can connect up to 6 devices with the Logitech Unifying software. I use it with the Logitech Wireless Keyboard K230.✔ It has a 848 nm perfomance laser, in case you're into that kind of stuff. It has an ON-OFF switch on the back, which you can flick with your thumb with only one hand. When you turn it on, a green LED on top tells you it's on. The LED also turns on when the mouse has been in standby for a while and you move it. It also turns red if the battery is nearly depleted, if I remember correctly. This only happened once a long time ago so I'm not sure if my memory is serving me right. There are also some rubber soles to ease gliding.I use mine with a Windows laptop, not sure if and how it and its software works with Apple products.❌ Cons:- after a few years, the side-scrolling markings, free-scrolling wheel button markings and logo will rub off, from palm perspiration and friction, I imagine. After 9 months of continuous, daily use, the free-scrolling wheel button marking is already beginning to fade into oblivion. You will be missed, circle marking of perpetual scrolling.❗ Word of caution: generally speaking, the better you treat your stuff, the more they last. This mouse is no exception. However, it is definitely made to last, unlike most consumer products, which have planned obsolescence built into their life-cycle. From what my tech-savvy acquaintance told me and my experience, Logitech products are more expensive than other brand but they make their products to last, which is a premium I had a hard time justifying but now I understand. My first one lasted for almost 6 years but because I became reckless using it (pushing buttons ever harder) and mishandling it while putting it and taking it out of my backpack, I had to press the left mouse button quite hard to get it to work, eventually trying to fix it myself, breaking it and then regretting my negligence. I have bought the one you are now probably contemplating buying while I visited the US and at $20, it was the best value I could have paid for, considering how much I paid for my first one.The old adage holds true: buy cheap, buy twice. I'm sure if I look after it, it will prove to be a generational investment that my children will be able to use...unless mice become an obsolete technology by that time.
