The GOOD
-Loud, high quality volume
-Excellent seal around the ears for noise cancellation
-Headset does not feel too tight
-split headband feels more comfortable then most other gaming headsets ive used
-the surround sound emulation is very good
-The best mic on a gaming headset I have ever used, period.
-software is low maintenance and simple to use (to activate mouse feedback, surround off/on, EQ settings)
-volume knob on headset is so convenient
-raise mic to mute yourself
-No noticeable hiss from the usb connection
The BAD
- heat will build up around the ears after awhile. As such with any noise cancelling headset.
- I think the cable to make this universal would have been a better value if it was included
-The microphone is a bit stiff and is definitely NOT "bendy"
In BETWEEN
- while the headset has a nice premium feel it is pretty much 98 percent plastic. This is super common among headsets to keep the price and the weight down, however some other headsets around the same price implement metal or aluminum on the headband. good care is needed for this headset.
Conclusion
- Sennheiser really lives up to its name with this one. I'm really enjoying this headset and it sounds better than my astro a40 sound system in my opinion. If you are on the fence about this one then pick this up, its worth it. this headset has been reviewed on youtube as well if you need the extra push to get past your skeptical side.
Even with the Dolby 7.1 disabled and running in regular stereo mode, the sound separation, clarity and bass response is exceptional. I've often read of the legendary quality from this German company and I can now understand why they are so highly regarded. With 7.1 enabled you will enjoy even crisper sounds and better positioning which in games like Battlefield 1 will actually help your playing as you will be able to detect movement behind you much quicker than before.
I do wish the software had a few more options for the equalizer settings as you just get 4. Off, ESports, Music and Game. Music and Game didn't sound too different from one another but ESports, to me sounded far too muffled.
I love the microphone quality and handy auto mute function when you lift the boom upward. The right earcup mounted volume dial is very handy and easy to use.
The headband is comfortably padded but out of the box the headphones did cause me some jaw pain for the first day because of the tightness. I should mention that I experience this with all new headphones though so its not specific to this unit. To remedy this, I usually place a new set of headphones around a small stack of books or something else wide overnight to help break them in. I did the same this time and by day 2 I was wearing the headphones for hours on end with no discomfort at all.
At 139 bucks, these are not cheap but for me, the price was well worth it as I was in the market for a pair of long lasting, high quality headphones that offered 7.1 capability. This delivered on those needs and much more.
Top reviews from other countries
1. Love the up and down microphone muting/unmuting applications. In Skype/MS Teams/Discord it works perfectly.
2. I find the sound quality excellent for voice, music and games, though do not count myself an audiophile.
3. The noise cancelling was a feature I specifically wanted as I make a lot of training videos and also am quite "breathy" when talking. This feature is outstanding. It significantly reduces my heavy breathing whilst still recording my voice in a clear manner, but where it really stands out is with background noises. I recently purchased a portable air-conditioner for my home/office. It is sat no more than 2ft behind me, yet there is not trace of it when attending conference calls or recording training videos, it does seem almost "magic"
In terms of actual gaming, I play most nights, but am not a "serious" gamer, so cannot truly comment on any specific gaming capabilities, other than the "good sound and comfortable" already mentioned.
The only slight drawback I have found is in the very simplistic software, in particular the Equaliser, you only have 3 hard-set profiles to choose from. I am used to being able to set different music profiles depending on the music type I am listening to, but with this software its not possible, but you can use your own if that bothers you
This is multiplatform but listed mainly for the PC, so this will only be a review for the PC. Mainly, a toaster of a PC. So if you're worried it won't be compatible with your PC, stop worrying because it works great with a toaster. I won't get into detail about the design or material since it's durable for those reasons and durability means sexiness, it's all you really need to know tbh.
● Plugs / Cords
This comes with a double ended usb cord to plug in your PC after attaching to a dongle cord that attaches to your headset. So, don't expect the usual separate 2 mic+audio plugs attached together onto one cord like most gaming headsets have. You could buy that for this headset if you aren't fond of plugging it into a usb 2.0 port slot. You could also purchase a one corded plug for your phone which makes this lovely tbh because it's multi platform if you buy w/e cords you prefer with this headset. Yeah idk if I explained that the way I wanted it to go through since it's 2AM for me right now and i'll probably edit this later. Basically, all plugs work for this headset, but the purchase only comes with a usb cord (rectangle btw), not others you'd have to buy if you'd prefer a different kind of cord.
● Procrastination / Gaming vs Studio Headset
After a prolonged thorough search, it was either a closed in gaming headset with a usb cord or a studio headset with a separate mic bought to attach onto it. In other words, it was either the Sennheiser or an Audio Technica with a ModMic 5.0 attached to it. Those are the best options by far with a budget under $300 for us poor Canadians with overpriced stuff compared to Amazon.Com or the rest of the world.
Obviously if you didn't tell already, I decided to go with a gaming headset (Sennheiser) because (tmi?) this was a gift for my gf to mark our one year being together. And although it's fairly easy of a build, I personally didn't want her to go through the efforts to attach a mic onto a studio headset. I suggest this because a studio headset with a ModMic on it is better than any gaming headset out there. What makes a gaming headset a "gaming" headset is just the flashy designs really, like headsets in general are all categorized the same.
● Why you should buy this?
Alright so, this headset is known for it's comfort and durablity which are two things that should meet a headset the most. The sound you hear is loud and perfect. It's a closed in headset so you won't hear anything around you outside of your headset, and people won't hear what you're listening to either. An open back headset sounds much better though because the sound is more of a realistic feel, since sound isn't travelling directly in your ears like a closed back does, but I hate how people can hear what you're hearing which is a huge con, so having this being closed back is just better IMO... personal preference really. The mic quality is crisp and clear without any background noise. The chance of people hearing a little static or wind or whatever you want to describe as background noise, would be when you talk (but it's rare). On Discord, with voice activation toggled on, it's like you're hearing people with this headset on push to talk instead. That's how great it is! It picks up little to no feedback. You'll possibly improve your gaming performance because of all the sound effects you could hear.
● Audio settings/ Braindead moments
Anyhow, with any gaming headset, you obviously have to go through the headset itself, the headset interface downloaded and installed, your PC's playback/recording settings, and the software settings you're using it on, like possibly Discord... like this is Discord certified.
● More audio things
You may hear yourself through your headset when you first use this. This is because there's an option on the headset interface you could toggle off so you don't hear yourself.
● Free Shipping, but...
Shipping and handling could be quite high ($7 for me). And the tax could be high too. I bought this with one day free shipping and the package arrived quickly from 7PM - 12PM. I was surprised because there was an exaggerated huge winter storm here too. It's Toronto, enough said.
TLDR: will edit this some other time because it's now almost 3AM and i'm writing a review instead of quality sleep right now, yeah.... hope I helped some people
Tfw you just bought this and then the next day, they decrease the price by roughly $10 less, oof
