Make sure you don't need the third screw holes on the side because this one doesn't have them
I had a funny problem figuring out how to use this drive: I've upgraded hard drives (or installed additional drives in tower computer) many times, but given the chance to try this behemoth I am (still) torn between trying to upgrade an old (2011) iMac or an equally old Lenovo tower - in either case when I do this I like to clone the existing drive so I ordered Macally Aluminum External Hard Drive Enclosure for USB 3.0 to 3.5" SATA / SSD Mac/PC up to 8TB HDD (M-S350U3) to house this disc to set up the target for the clone. I like Macally enclosures and have used many in the past - unfortunately this particular enclosure and this particular drive are not a fit, for the simple reason that the Macally expects to use the two "close" screw holes of the three on the side of the drive, but this particular hard drive only has two screw holes on each side, one on either end. Not surprisingly, the Seagate drive is compliant with the ISO standard (I checked) that says the third screw hole (which the Macally enclosure expects to be there) is optional. I can imagine Seagate engineers debating this and deciding that for whatever reason they didn't want to put the optional third holes on this drive, but guess what this particular nerd found this design choice annoying. After a so-far unsuccessful attempt to obtain another enclosure directly from China (not through Amazon) I decided to get one of these: iDsonix U3102 USB 3.0/2.0 SATA 1 Bay Hard Drive Docking Station with 3.3 Feet USB 3.0 Cable for HDD/SSD - Black just so I can try the drive without tearing apart my iMac. It works really well, and I have formatted the drive with my (2015) Macbook Air - zowie, I now have a 10 Terabyte external USB drive. For someone my age (64), a 10-Terabyte hard drive is mind-boggling. I can remember buying a tower PC with an employee discount, spending over $3000 for a Pentium with so much disk space I thought it would last my lifetime. That machine had 104 Megabytes of disk. That must have been about 25 years ago. It's really hard for me to imagine what the average consumer is going to do with a drive this big. I think I will probably start copying home video that I put on DVDs a number of years ago. Even for professional use, I have a hard time imagining who needs a disk this big, but I'm sure that 25 years from now, these thoughts will seem quaint. So the lesson here is: if you really really think you need this much disk space (and that's up to you) then sure, buy this drive. Just be sure that your enclosure doesn't need the third screw hole on the side.

From the moment I plugged it in, this drive has been a dream, 10TB of storage is a lot and I don't plan on needing any more storage for the many years to come. It's also a really fast drive too considering the fact that this is a HDD and not an SSD. I've had no noise issues which I was slightly worried about since the mounting holes on this drive only let me screw in 2 screws into this drive using the mounting system in my rosewill blackhawk ultra case, but it is running very well. It's a pretty penny to pay, but from my experiences with this drive, it's entirely worth it if you have any need for this much storage. Heat has also simply not been an issue with me on this drive too in case anyone was wondering. I will update if anything changes.

This is the second drive I've had same issue. There's a persistent clicking during idle you can hear, and even feel if you put your hand on the case of your pc closest to the driver enclosure/mounting point. Happens every 3-4 seconds, and will not go away. I've tried everything that has been suggested, ran the SeaTools long test which stops the clicking for the 17 hour duration, but it comes back immediately afterwards. I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary, just trying to get this drive to be a decent mass storage for media in my PC. Connected to a power supply with wattage to spare, then a sata cable straight to my motherboard. Hell, I even have a regular 3TB barracuda drive that works perfectly and is silent.

Worst part is when I decided to contact SeaGate customer service, I gave them the serial number of the drive, and received two different emails telling me it "is an internal component of the external hard drive" without explaining what that actually means in context of my issue. The second of the two emails then informed me that because of this fact, they aren't able to act on the warranty. Now let me tell you right now, this drive was sold directly from Amazon, and I'm aware some people do sketchy returns, but this came in sealed OEM packaging, it was unopened, was not formatted, had the right amount of space, and the label was pristine and untouched. So if there's any fault here in terms of it somehow being the wrong item, I'm willing to put that on Seagate. That said, so the five year warranty these drives come with? Try one weekend and Seagate is telling me they're not going to honor it. Faaaaaantastic.

EDIT: I've received further clarification from Seagate that apparently the drive was never meant to be sold and was intended to be used inside a an external enclosure. This of course makes no sense as like I previously stated, the drive was factory sealed. Nevertheless, be forewarned, apparently, by Seagate's own words, you're not supposed to be buying these drives. If you have any issues with them, you better hope that they appear within the Amazon 30 day return window, because chances are Seagate's going to claim these were never meant to be sold and not honor your warranty.

The product arrived fast, without a box, screws or cables but I had all those from my motherboard already, it arrived with no box but was in an anti static bag which was unopened and wrapped in a more than generous amount of bubble wrap and was tightly packed in fact there was so much bubble wrap if there is a shortage in the country anytime soon I could tell you why.

The hard drive installed easily and only needed to be initialised and given a drive letter once installed.

Hard disk meccanico 10TB silenzioso e veloce

1.0 out of 5 stars The noisiest and worst HD you'll ever own!

Update: drive quit after 1 year. Absolute garbage! Avoid at all costs and save up for an SSD with more space.

For storage this drive cant be beat for the price. Speedwise it's ok for gaming although it's not as fast as a hybrid or SSD. But none of that matters because this is the noisiest HD you'll ever own! Its constantly shuddering and spinning in an annoying and incredibly loud way. It sounds like you're 80 year old grandma is trying scratch on a turntable, but nana is terrible at it. From what I've read online there's nothing that can be done about this. If you have your PC under your desk maybe it wont bother you as much, but if it's on your desk it'll drive you nuts. Because of this I can only give this drive 1 star!
