The Good
==============
- It is not as big as I thought. From watching the videos I thought it was going to be slightly larger and was worried it was going to look way oversized but I would say its just about perfect. I would not want it smaller or bigger.
- Battery is 3.5 days for my first use but I was using it a lot. I am expecting I'll get 4-5 days. (I have always-on screen turned off)
- The classic looks better then I though.
- I like the large display.
- charges in a couple hours / wireless charger
- The quality is nice and the screen is good quality.
- Pretty much all the main apps that I want.
- The heart rate monitor is good( but not perfect). I have used other products and this one actually seems to work a tad bit better than a Fitbit charge HR I was using when comparing it to the Elliptical HR monitor. Update 1/5/2017: The heart rate is for sure working better then my Fitbit charge HR. I find it best to rotate it so the face is facing inward (I don't need to take it off, just rotate it) and then slide it up my arm until it on firm and does not shake around. After doing this the HR seems to be within 1-2 bps of my elliptical(that i believe is most accurate.)
The Bad
=================
- For some reason the Sleep says I sleep 2-3 hours a night but I sleep 3 times that.
- Samsung Pay needs a passcode enabled. This almost ruins it because now need to enter a passcode a couple times a day just to use my watch. I don't think I am going to keep the the SamsungPay but I am still playing with it. I think the watch tries to only require a passcode if you take it off but I find I have to log in a couple times a day still...like when I get up in the morning. I don't really want to enter a passcode to unlock my watch for as much as I will use Samsung Pay.
Update 1/5/2017: Today I turned off the passcode on my gear and it automatically removed my Samsung Pay information from my watch so I cannot use it anymore. The Samsung pay was awesome but I would rather not enter a PIN a couple times a day to use my watch. I'm a little bit sad it did not work out for me. I hope Samsung finds a solution. I understand the need for a PIN but that should be up to the customer I think. Maybe they could provide some method to deactivate it if the watch is lost or somehow improve the sensing thing that can tell when I take it off. I can tell there is a sensing method but it does not work 100% of the time - so I need to login a couple times.
- The warranty starts from when it is shipped and not when the person opens it. Basically don't buy it 28 days before you give it to them as this will eat into the warranty period. I was going to return it and exchange it for another new one because it was not opened but got lazy and just opened it anyway. It seems kind of lame to exchange a watch for an extra 28 days of warranty.
- 1/5/2017: A new issue started the other day. Three or four times in the last couple days the Gear disconnects from my Note 5 and I have to go into the Note, open the Gear App and click connect. I'm not sure why it will not automatically connect. I played around with it some and could not find the answer so far.
Other notes
================
- The leather is a little on the stiff side but I'm wondering if I actually might like this after it starts to contour to my hand. (like new shoes)
I listed some negative things above (negative things are easy to find in products) but overall I really like it so far. (after 4 days)
Note: My review is just me trying to help others out. I did not get any kind of endorsements or discounts for my review.
SOME OBSERVATIONS: The rotating bezel is the bomb. This greatly facilitates navigating watch menus, adjusting the volume of the speakerphone, etc. The display is crystal clear and visible even in the brightest sunlight. It doesn't have that annoying dead space at the bottom of the display. I was worried about having to push a button to activate the display, but no worries. Simply moving your wrist upwards to check the time is usually enough to turn the display on. At first I configured it to always have the display on but then discovered I really didn't need to. Next, charging the watch means placing it in a dedicated charging cradle. A magnet holds the watch in place, and charging is "wireless" from the cradle to the watch, although the charger itself is plugged in, of course. This process works well, but that means you can only charge it on the cradle (no directly attaching a cable). You can purchase another cradle to keep somewhere else, which is pretty handy. What about apps? Samsung has an increasing number of apps and watch faces you can download from their app store. There are some interesting ones like a simple navigation app that ties to the phone and even a weather radar. Many are free, but some of the watch faces have a nominal $1 or $2 fee. (The one in the picture is my current favorite) I love to switch these in and out. Fitness applications for the S3 may not be as robust as you would get through a dedicated fitness band but impressive enough for me nevertheless. My heart rate data, step count, and activity levels are logged backed to the Samsung SHealth app on my phone. It even records my sleep patterns and gives me a pretty decent summary of how much restful vs fitful sleep I've received.
COMPARISON WITH GEAR S2 CLASSIC: I've actually used both models, first getting a "certified refurbished" S2 to try out last year. I eventually returned it due to display issues, but really liked it otherwise. On the other hand, the S3 is a good bit bigger on your wrist, but has a much longer battery life. Both the S2 and S3 have an "always on" feature that displays a dimmer, less-colorful display in exchange for shorter battery life. The S3's always-on mode looks much better than the S2's. One big difference between the two is the S3's larger size and greater weight. Some reviewers complained about this. I even went as far as to make a paper-cut out template to gauge the size on my wrist. The end result is I took the plunge for the S3 and am glad I did even though the S2 is a now a good bit cheaper.
