Good Hardware, But Some Frustrating Issues
4 Stars
Good Hardware, But Some Frustrating Issues
I bought two of these - one a year or so ago, and one this week. I had no significant problems with the first, but have already had to reset the second a couple times due to issues, and looks like I will have to reset again. Both have been upgraded to the most recent firmware (6.9.4).What I like:1. From a hardware perspective, amazing value. Quad-core Cortex processor (1.4 GHz) with 2 GB RAM on-board. It has dual Gb ethernet ports with link aggregation. For the price, other than Terramaster, no one comes close.2. VERY solid build quality. I have many NASes, from QNAP, Synology, and Asustor. This is the most solid, well-built little brick of them all. Very heavy and substantial feeling, with really nice large rubber-bottomed "feet". And the unit looks great. Door swings open to reveal removable drive caddies.3. Compact design - shorter than most QNAP and Synology 2-bay boxes.4. Tool-less drive installation (3.5" drives) - the inner drive bracket slides out of the drive caddy, and prongs piece the hard drive's screw holes, so no need for a screwdriver to install drives. There are screws included if you choose to use 2.5" drives.5. Quiet fan with three speed settings (Quiet, Balanced, and Cool). I ended up setting to "Balanced" for my Toshiba drives, which run hot, and "quiet" for my Seagate Ironwolf drives, which run much cooler. Either way, fan noise is minimal.6. Simple, decent app which makes remote file access fairly easy, though not the fastest I have seen (Western Digital's remote access is the quickest I have seen). What I don't like:1. The operating system menu/user interface looks pretty at first, but is bizarrely and awkwardly laid out and is missing useful features standard on Asustor, QNAP, and Synology units.2. Have had frequent "Admin page is not accessible" issues with BOTH NAS units, which makes no sense because I can see and access folders and the main summary pages for both. Sometimes a reboot helps and sometimes it doesn't. The newer unit I just bought is giving me fits and the admin page starts to load for three or four minutes, and then I get a message stating it can't be displayed. The admin page is now working for ReadyNAS #1, but not #2. My router shows the IP addresses for both units, and typing that IP address into a browser window access the admin page for one of the NASes, but not the other.3. There is no real "system information" page which shows things like CPU, RAM, CPU & RAM utilization, etc. for this model. They say it has 2GB of RAM which I'll just have to accept because there's no way to display it on the ReadyNAS admin page. All of my other-brand NASes have detailed info in their OSes.4. Apps I installed on my first 212 are not available for the second (Nero MediaHome, ReadyNAS Photos, etc.) are not available in the Apps list for the second unit (when I was able to access the Admin page). Other new apps are, however.5. Resetting this unit is not straightforward like a QNAP or Synology where you hold the reset button down a certain number of seconds until you hear a certain number of beeps.6. 16 hours later, my volume is still "rebuilding" for two 4-TB hard drives and the second NAS is molasses slow and I cannot access the admin page.To reset:You have to turn off the power, hold the reset button in, turn on the power while holding the reset button, release the reset button once the lights flash, and then click the backup button to cycle through various combinations of illumination of your ReadyNAS front panel lights, depending on your desired reset state (the power, disk 1, disk 2, and IUSB lights). Then you depress the reset button (with a paperclip) to select. Then it goes into a disk test that lasts five minutes, and then a "waiting period" that last ten minutes. You can press the backup button again to bypass the waiting period. There's no indication there's a hardware issue and no evidence of any software corruption I can see, so I'll reset the second unit again and leave the virus scanner off, and hopefully things will stay working. In any event, this thing has been far more temperamental and difficult to get set up than ANY QNAP, Asustor, or Synology device I have had. Even Western Digital's user interface is much more useful.EDIT: I did find an app that will display system info after you install it, but it's not natively displayed anywhere in the OS itself.EDIT #2: After a couple of days and a very LONG volume rebuilding process,. NAS #2 seems to be working well and is fluid and quick. Netgear really needs to do something about the rebuilding speed and unit performance during rebuilding - my QNAP NASes perform much better during this process. I have been able to access both NAS's admin pages for the past several days without issue.I also really like the ReadyCloud page. I can access my files from the app, but i like being able to get them via the rReadyCloud web page as well and being to access each individual NAS. Downside is you cannot access the admin page while not on your home LAN (I travel a lot for work). Overall, I am a lot happier with it than I was a week ago so will give back another star and give it four of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star NAS backup with an easy set up + It looks good too!
Reviewed in the United States on June 27, 2016
Top 5 reasons why I gave this product 5 stars:
1. Ease of set up - Literally took 10 minutes to get up and running. I was actually worried about setting this up on my own because its a NAS product, but to my surpise, it took 1 click and I was up and running.
2. Longevity - I've purposely had my ReadyNAS set up for 6 months to make sure my review is thorough and accurate & its still working as new
3. ReadyCloud interface is nice! - I'm non-technical, but its easy to navigate and set up key features such as backup, accounts, sharing
4. Packed with technical features for my husband - The product is perfect for all users. My husband is technical and he's been able to set up advanced features and actually likes making tweaks for performance and storing
5. Looks cool on our desk - I'm not a fan of gadgets or wiring everywhere, but this product actually looks good and almost serves as a desk accessory

Phone/Video Backup: I love the idea of taking pictures on my iPhone and being able to backup right away and save data. For a while I was getting the "storage limit" notification on my iPhone, but now thats gone and I have backups of all my features. I can also easily access my photos and share them with family members and even on my travel blog. 5 stars for this!

App: The app makes it quick and easy for me to look up a document, change settings, perform a backup, or just share my data. I was used to using Dropbox for a while, but this has replaced that use and is great.

Would I recommend this to a friend? Definitely, and in fact, I have already. I've always been worried about losing family milestone photos (including my wedding), but with the disk and cloud backup, I am covered either way! I do plan to upgrade disk storage soon.

Thanks Netgear for having me participate in the review/test program and sending this my way. It's perfect for my needs and I'll continue to add more Netgear products so I can make best use of all the features.
