This game is basically a love letter to the Life is Strange universe; it is clear that it was written by fans of the series. If you have not played the original Life is Strange game, do yourself a favor and pick that one up first. While BtS is totally coherent even if you have not played the original, you will be missing crucial context that is very important in a game focused on story and characters.
All that being said, this is an excellent start and I'm very much looking forward to the remaining episodes. Chloe and Rachel's relationship feels very organic, if a tad fast-paced at times (one could make an argument that when you consider how desperate each of them is for meaningful companionship, the fast pace makes complete sense. This is sometimes hard to understand if you have never been in similar situations as our two main characters, but I'd be willing to bet that anyone who has been in high school has seen these sorts of relationships played out on a regular basis).
As with the previous Life is Strange game, there are dozens of little tidbits in each scene that make the world a joy to explore. The inhabits of Arcadia Bay are interesting to interact with, especially when Chloe's sass is on full display (the "Backtalk" gameplay feature focused on picking the best responses for Chloe to argue with anyone and everyone is a fun feature, and what it lacks in the gravitas of Max's time-bending power, it more than makes up for in fun interactions.)
In short, if you are a fan of the original Life is Strange, you will find plenty to be happy about here. If you are not a fan, you might still be pleasantly surprised, but you will get a lot more out of it if you play the original game first.
Regarding the Deluxe version's particular features:: The extra outfit choices are great, as is the mixtape mode. However, if you plan on purchasing this version for the bonus episode (featuring both Chloe and Max, the main character of the original game) keep in mind that the bonus episode has also not been released as of the time of this writing. So don't expect too much right now, but based on the writing for this episode I believe it will be worth having for the future.
The first game was known for emotional moments, and this first episode, "Awake", follows suit. So far, it is an excellent predecessor to the game everyone loved. For those who haven't played the original "Life is Strange", I highly recommend playing it yourself before watching others' streams and such. The game had a lot of tense decisions which made gamers seriously question the right path, or criticize the game for giving you hard decisions and consequences while unashamedly admitting later that they loved it.
"Before the Storm" is filled with moments both outrageously funny and dismally sad. Its hard to pick the 'right' course, for your playthrough. Decisions are never very black and white. While it does have some 'slow' moments, the next scene may turn around and give you a surprise kick. I've enjoyed it so far.
Regrettably, episode 3 totally derails the relationship angle by taking Rachel Amber out of the story for most of the game and finishing with a closing montage that dosen't answer any of the questions we were expecting to be answered. Come on, if you are going to imply a possible lesbian relationship don't be afraid to go with it. Why did Rachel wind up with Frank and Jefferson? Inquiring minds want to know.
