Slim and Sleek with Max Q DesignEverything’s engineered for the ultimate thin gaming laptop experience, including the laptop, chip, drivers, thermal and electrical components, and more. ROG Zephyrus takes thin-and-light gaming laptops to a whole new level. It has a slim profile just 16.9-17.9 mm thin and weighs only 2.2kg, but that doesn’t stop it from packing the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 graphics. |
Play it CoolROG Zephyrus is armed with an exclusive Active Aerodynamic System (AAS) that breaks all the rules. AAS combines intelligent design with innovative technologies to give gamers what they want: an ultra-slim laptop that runs cooler and quieter without sacrificing performance. When the laptop is opened, a portion of the bottom flexes to create 20% more open space for air circulation. Along with our unique AeroAccelerator technology, this gap improves airflow by 40% and reduces temperatures by 20% compared to conventional cooling. You can game for hours on end with impeccable stability and no throttling. ROG Zephyrus offers the highest level of performance in the smallest chassis. |
Breath DeeplyAAS incorporates a unique AeroAccelerator (AA) technology that increases the speed and efficiency of airflow through the laptop. It starts with the carefully shaped aluminum alloy shroud around the intake, which has curved edges and raised guides that channel more cool air into the fan. The fan blades are made of a special liquid crystal polymer that lets us reduce the thickness by 33% compared to traditional designs. We can add more blades as a result, improving airflow through the fan by 26%. Cool air passes over heatsink fins just 0.1 mm thick - half the thickness of typical fins. The thinner profile reduces air resistance while letting us squeeze in more fins to increase the surface area for better heat dissipation. |
Make Your Keyboard Unique With Aura RGBROG Zephyrus' keyboard is positioned at the front of the chassis to allow better cooling for the internal components and offer a more comfortable, familiar position for gamers accustomed to desktop keyboards. Aura RGB lighting lets you customize colors and dynamic effects for the entire keyboard, and you can adjust the QWER and WASD clusters separately to adapt to MOBA, FPS, and other games. Anti-ghosting tech ensures your commands are interpreted instantly and correctly - even if you hit up to 30 keys simultaneously. The ergonomically designed keys have 1.4mm of travel for greater comfort and accuracy when gaming and typing. With an expected lifetime of 20 million presses, the keys offer exceptional durability and reliability for heavy use. |

Extensive ConnectivityROG Zephyrus is jam-packed with the latest connectivity to give you blazing-fast transfer rates and maximum compatibility. The USB Type-C port delivers up to 40Gbps to Thunderbolt devices - four times the bandwidth of USB 3.1 gen 2 - while four USB 3.1 gen1 ports are ready for all your existing gear. With HDMI 2.0, you can connect to 4K TVs at 60Hz. |
Immersive SoundROG Zephyrus equips Smart Amp technology to optimize audio output. Pros:
- Incredible gaming power; maxing out Destiny 2 on the absolute highest settings and I get 115+ FPS the majority of the time (you'll get normal dips to 80+ FPS at times, though this is normal as even my Titan Xp desktop rig does this depending on if things are loading on screen or there's a specific instance with a ton of activity for a split second, etc). I also managed a surprisingly stable max OC of +200mhz on core and memory using MSI Afterburner on stock voltages...basically making up the ground to being a "true" 1070 as opposed to the slightly lower-clocked Max-Q version that this is supposed to be.
- Extremely lightweight! Even with the power brick, this is an ultra-portable powerhouse and somehow feels even lighter than my work Surface Book.
- Fantastic design; the bottom opening up when the screen is opened to ventilate, the copper accents, etc...it's certainly one of the better looking "gaming" laptops out there. It is a fingerprint magnet though, but I don't think that deserves to knock off a star.
- Great keyboard; tactile enough and super quiet
- Boot up time takes literally 5 seconds...it's actually impressive
- 120hz display w/ G-Sync...need I say more? The 1080p res is perfect for a 15.6" screen as well (i've owned 4k laptops at this size and honestly, give me 1080p @ 120 FPS w/ G-Sync over 4k @ 60hz for a gaming laptop any day).
Cons:
- Can't repaste CPU or GPU without voiding warranty (sticker is there), and combing through forums it seems that using something like Gelid Extreme or Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut makes an 8-10c difference on the max temps of both the CPU and GPU; this is a big deal, as though the laptop is engineered to last, it's always nice to keep temps as low as possible to squeeze out as much longevity as possible.
- Undervolting the CPU with Intel's XTU tool is pretty much a MUST...I managed to undervolt mine by -0.130v and it made a 7-8c difference in max temps. This is important as the CPU and GPU share the heatsink pipes and any amount of temps you can drop helps. After the undervolting I have yet to see either the CPU or GPU come close to 80c during gaming (i've seen reports of 90c without undervolting) and i'm guessing that undervolting combined with new thermal paste would probably result in low-mid 70s TOPS on this during gaming even at warm ambient temps.
- The ROG branding is fine, but for a laptop in this price range, ASUS should really tone it down...the "Republic of Gamers" lettering on the screen bezel is too gaudy, and the red LEDs on the bottom of the machine can't be turned off...I would have paid more money to have these things removed to make the laptop more "acceptable" for professional use (or if you're just trying to be generally considerate in a dark room or something).
Bottom line is....if you're looking for a sleek and portable gaming powerhouse to max out most modern games and a 120hz/G-Sync display is important to you, and price is generally not a concern...you can't go wrong with the GX501!
PS: For those wondering if the 1080 version is worth the price premium...i'd say no, not for 1080p even at 120hz...i'd save the $500 as OC'ing the 1070 Max-Q in this unit is PLENTY of power already...and I say this as a guy who bought a Titan Xp over a 1080 Ti.... :P
graphics:
- gtx1070 is really strong. BDO and Farcry5 ran on max graphics >60fps, 1080 res.
- i plug hdmi to my TV to view 4k res, it runs at 30-40 fps comfortably at max graphics.
- asus auto throttles the GFX if it gets too hot, lack of power, etc. this is kind of irritating, you can turn on fan to full blast - which generally sets GPU performance higher. but surely sound a lot noiser.
gfx fan:
- to start, most AAA games will make the fan whirr fast, high pitch and noticeably loud.
- you can throttle anytime with pre-installed ASUS software (ROG gaming center), but that will reduce your FPS. i let it run and turn up my game louder. my mind will selectively ignore it after a while.
hdd:
- the solid state is very fast, but smaller, my config has 237gb usable space SSD. the 1TB is a hybrid SATA HD (with small SSD component) that supposed to auto prioritize frequently accessed files for faster speed. not noticeable difference for me. has 931GB usable space, reported by windows 'my computer'.
processing power/ RAM:
CPU: i7-8750H intel coffee lake 6 core, 12 threads = incredibly fast. multi-tasking mastery.
also includes intel UHD 630 onboard GPU - this GPU sidekick can run youtube/ pptx, without slowing down your GFX card working hard on your games.
my config is 16gb ram, great for most purposes - i wish i had 32gb for my VM images, which cost quite a bit - maybe i'll upgrade sometime later.
physical design/ dimensions:
really thin when closed. metal finish is great.
when screen is open, bottom lifts up a bit to give a gap for airflow. nice design.
HOWEVER, the laptop must stay open, for better airflow. this is a small problem, as i plug laptop to my big TV, hoping to keep my laptop closed for gaming. partial workaround is to display to TV but not laptop, saving my laptop screen/ better FPS by using only 1 screen, etc.
laptop stays at comfortable temperature throughout the intensive gaming.
this is much better layout than other zephyrus, with large toughpad below keyboard, like all other laptops.
i carry this when i travel (about 3kg+ with 'big brick' charger), now i game on the fly!!
i use wireless mouse/ keyboard, with this laptop plugged to my big screen. so GFX fan noise don't bother me.
keyboard lights are very useful in the dark. and you can turn them off completely if you need to.the 'gamevisual' app that does this is a bit slow/ laggy.
it is nowhere as portable as my MS surface pro (<1kg), but much more portable than most gaming laptops.
ports:
lots of ports on the left/right side of laptop. nothing behind it, to allow incredible design for air flow.
note that power port on the left side. if that matters to where you place your laptop.
power:
its reviewed that battery do not last long - when im not plugged in, i can play farcry for 1-2 hours (tested)
otherwise, for reading, ms office work, it should last 3hrs+ (not tested)
Top reviews from other countries
I bought it for PUBG and its portability. Used to own a 2011 model of Alienware M17xR3, that was really heavy compared to this one.
I think the only concern I have is heating problem. Yes, the stock paste could be bad, I didn't change it though. I undervolted every core to 3.2x max and some other settings. Before undervolting, Medium-low settings on PUBG would brought the CPU temp to up to 80-85Celsius, after undervolting, it became around 75-80C max, which was not bad, considering that I didn't repaste it.
As for the speakers, I think they are not loud enough? I was watching Fed Up on this laptop and the voice was really not big enuf.... at least compared to Alienware. But for gaming I'd never not use a headset.... so this is nothing for me.
I'd recommend this laptop to those who'd want portability and ability to play almost all new major games on the market right now with at least medium settings and high fps.
