    Excellent couch gaming experience!
    4 Stars
    Excellent couch gaming experience!
I waited quite some time before I purchased this, but I finally convinced myself to commit about a month ago, and I am glad I did. I now do all of my PC gaming on my 120" projector screen from my couch. The cable that connects it to your pc feels very thick and sturdy, and plenty long. It connects to your pc via a single usb port, and provides 4 usb connections on the Lapdog itself - 2 internal for keyboard and mouse, and 2 external for accessories. Having these extra usb ports handy is awesome. I usually have these accessory slots occupied by my phone charger and wired connection to an Xbox One controller for games where a controller provides a better experience (e.g. Rocket League). In addition to the usb connection to your PC the cable also plugs into a power brick on the end near your PC, which provides power for the usb hub. The chassis itself is very solid, made mostly of metal (aluminum?). It doesn't feel or look cheap in any way, which is what you would expect for a pricey piece of equipment. There is a detachable foam base that attaches via magnets. I find the connection plenty sturdy enough for normal use. I have never had the Lapdog slide off of the foam base on accident. I like that it is detachable, because the foam piece is contoured to fit your lap comfortably, which means it does not sit flat on a table, so I slide the base off when I store it on the back of my computer desk, and it sits flat, and the base I can just tuck down to the side of my desk. There is an insert in the base for the included driver that is used to remove the screws holding your keyboard in. I would not advise storing the driver here, as it does not fit in very snugly. I just keep mine with my other hardware, it is not like there is a good reason to be swapping the keyboard and mouse out often - that kind of defeats the purpose. The Lapdog provides a very comfortable experience. The foam pad is contoured to fit your lap, and also lifts the unit enough that it feels like a natural height for your hands. I usually game for several hours at a time, and have never experienced any fatigue or had my lap get warm from the unit. There are a few small issues that could be improved upon, but I do not find them major. One issue is that if you like to sit cross legged on the couch, the unit will slope back towards you, and your mouse will not stay still. I noticed my sister had this problem when using it. This could be solved by the inclusion of a second foam bad which is more wedge shaped, in order to support the side closest to you. The other small issue is that on the mouse side, there is a slightly raised lip on both the right side, and the side that faces you. This is to keep the mouse from sliding off, which is nice, but can cause some discomfort if you try to rest your wrist upon it. I usually have a pillow tucked under my arm anyway to provide forearm and elbow support, so I don't have many problems with it, but I could see it causing a small issue for some people. Lastly, typing on the keyboard feels slighly awkward, since it feels like it is fairly far left when sitting on your lap. This is an extremely minor quibble, since most games don't involve a ton of typing, and you can pretty easily adapt to it if necessary. The last issue with the Lapdog is the price. At $120 and no sign of a sale anytime soon, it is a fairly large investment for a peripheral. Combine this with the fact that the keyboards it supports aren't exactly cheap - ($70-$100 range on average?), and it would be a pain to remove the keyboard/mouse frequently, you are investing a good bit of money into fully utilizing this piece of equipment. I'd like to see it come down in price soon so more people can enjoy it.Overall, I am extremely pleased with the Lapdog. Anyone who has ever tried to used a keyboard on their lap and a mouse on the couch next to them knows how that experience is in no way pleasurable, and stuffs sliding around everywhere. Having both keyboard and mouse in a self contained unit that fits comfortably on your lap is a great experience, and definitely worth it. I would recommend to anyone interested in couch gaming.
