P9 Signature's headband cleverly decouples each earcup. This stops unwanted vibration transmitting between each earcup and the headband. This removal of distortion is one of the reasons P9 Signature is so clear and open sounding.

I think my point is that with the proper able or DAC/amplifier these are incredibly versatile in a package that justifies their high price. Outfitted with the right cable and/or DAC and amplifier these could be your "Holy Grail" of headphones if you want versatility and looking for one headphone to rule them all. Sort of the Swiss Army knife of headphones, but at a price.
One caveat of course is the price. But I have to say these are superior to my B&W PX (still my favorite mobile/noisy environment headphones) or my M&D M60's which are Bluetooth.
So my recommendation is: If you are interested in buying the P9s (and curious as I was since I am always looking to upgrade my sound quality), I suggest you purchase the P7's and compare the sound for yourself. I think most would agree that the P7 sound markedly better in many respects. The only advantage that the P9s have over the P7s is the more accurate and cleaner sounding trebles. It is worth noting that the earpads on the P9s are larger, so many who complained that the P7s were not large enough to be truly around-the-ear headphones, might find this aspect better on the P9. However, it is also worth mentioning that the earpads on the P7s are softer, whereas the pads on the P9s are stiff -- kind of the like sound.
My disclaimer to this review is that I personally prefer a "V" sound, having deep, deep bass and sparkling high treble. I also note that what I believe sounds great, may not sound pleasing to another listener. Just like Advil works on my headaches, but Tylenol does nothing for me. Keep this in mind. We all are different people with different taste and preferences. Thanks!
1) Since it is semi-closed back, the noise isolation is not good. So it is not a commute headphone
2) it is also semi-portable. You can carry it to the office (the semi close will not disturb other people), yet this is not the headphone that you will use as portable one. It is a headphone to use at home or at the office in a calm environment to enjoy your music.
Even though there are many people stating that you don`t need an amp/dac. I am sorry, but you need. The smartphones doesn't have enough audio quality to make this headphone flourish. The Macbook Pro is a very good source, otherwise buy an amp/dac and enjoy this great headphone
Edit 8/2018 - Just got the PX's and wired, the sound is almost as good as the P9's. Don't buy the P9's without listening to the PX's first. My P9's are gathering dust now.

I prefer headphones with cables, over the wireless ones, for their sound quality; however, the cables provided with these headphones are simply way too (unnecessarily) long, and just end up getting in the way.
Finally, I really don't understand why they are so darn expensive. The sound quality and the design aspects, in my opinion, don't justify the price at all. You are just paying for the brand name, I suppose. I most certainly wouldn't recommend these to anybody.
I have been looking around for headphones to replace my aging but wonderful Audio Technica ATX-M50's. I should begin by stating that I'm a professional musician and piano instructor, so I'm quite particular about my audio equipment. I don't consider myself an "audiophile" but I enjoy good music played on a good system. I can usually recognize a crappy compressed audio track against a lossless track quite easily, so I try to listen to uncompressed CD files or HD AUDIO files when possible.
The B&W P9 cans interested me because of their stellar reputation. There are numerous reviews online that positively gush about these phones -- and for the most part I agree with the reviews. Here's my breakdown:
PROS:
1. Stellar build quality, absolutely 1st-class / high-quality feel to this product. Just holding them in your hands is a pleasure, they feel luxurious. B&W used top-notch materials in their construction.
2. Overall design is excellent, they are somewhat heavy, but still comfortable to wear. The leather ear cups are well-made. Again, 100% quality.
3. The over-ear design does a good job of isolating you from ambient noise, they're great for intensive listening in most environments.
4. They don't require much power to operate, as compared to some other high-end headphones. The P9's work great with a phone, computer, or stereo amp. You don't need an outboard headphone amp to power these cans.
5. The soundstage is wonderful. Very distinct rendering of instruments, voice, percussion, etc. I noticed things in familiar tracks to me that I'd never heard before. If you've read that elsewhere about the P9's, well, it's true. They are incredibly good at defining the overall "staging" of a song, making the P9's a pleasure to listen to. Musical instruments are clearly delineated in a space around you, sometimes almost sounding like they're behind you. Very impressive!
CONS:
1. They do require a "break-in" period. Straight out-of-the-box the P9's sound really GOOD but not GREAT. After a week or two of regular listening they seemed to "settle in" and there was a subtle improvement in overall sound quality.
2. The mids and upper-range of the P9's are clear but not overpowering. Vocals can sound a bit muted, but it depends on your source material. Percussion is not as bright as I would expect. Things like cymbals, snare drum, etc. seem to lack the clarity and overtones to recreate their character convincingly. But again -- this depends heavily on the quality of your audio source and headphone amp.
3. There is a bias in the low-to-low mid range, making these a very "warm" sounding set of headphones. Again, some people might love this -- and there were times when the P9's blew my socks off. "Planets" by Emily Haines was absolutely gorgeous. Many tracks by Steely Dan sounded fantastic. Jazz sounded consistently good -- very warm and engaging. But these are not NEUTRAL phones by any means. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. The P9's seem to perform best with acoustic music, or vocal-focused music, jazz, folk, etc. -- but electronica was WAY too much for me. The bass was over-emphasized, making the mid-range part of the song sound muddled. Heavily produced (and compressed) pop was the same. Again, the P9's sound can be biased towards the low-end in a very unnatural way.
4. Price. These are VERY expensive headphones, and they should out-perform their peers by a huge margin. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized there's diminishing returns here. You can buy a really decent pair of headphones (Sony, Audio Technica, B&O, etc.) for under $500. My Audio Technica's cost about $200. So I thought: am I getting FIVE TIMES better sound from the P9's? Qualitatively: NO.
That being said -- I'm keeping these cans. Once I got past the "burn-in" period, they became much more open-sounding and the initial "bass bump" settled down. I found that it also helped to dial in a tiny bit of custom EQ on my audio player. It only took a couple minutes of experimentation but I locked in a custom EQ that really helped deliver the sound I was looking for.
The P9's have now become my #1 headphones. If you can justify the expense, and don't mind a bit of sonic warmth, these are probably one of the best headphones available anywhere. Thanks for reading! :)
Again, I applaud B&W for making a wonderful high-end headphone product.
