My sister's boyfriend just bought the new MacBook, which is basically the same specs but costs twice as much. I got to compare the two devices today. I have to admit that I really like the Asus better, especially because of the keyboard. Plus it has way more ports (3 full size USB). He thought mine was really cool, then at the end he goes "wow, it has a touch screen too?". You won't be disappointed with this computer, now that the drivers are all fixed and working great. I think most of the negative reviews on this are because of buggy drivers (which like I said, seem to be working great now, because all my problems have been resolved after the update a week or 2 ago).
Background. My main computer is a 32GB core i7 beast with ssd and what not. So my initial hopes for this laptop with a fanless core m processor were very low.
SURPRISE!!! this thing flies. It's not a gaming machine at all, but for office, web browsing and even programming work, I find myself using this more than my main computer. This 6th gen core m processor is comparable to the 5th gen core i5 in performance; well maybe about 20% less powerful in cpu intensive tasks. But honestly, if you don't care about playing games on this laptop, by all means the core m processor is more than enough. And this is coming from an IT analyst who uses Android studio and runs android emulators constantly on this laptop.
Now that performance is out of the way, let's talk why you would want to buy this particular laptop.
1; It's light and portable. For some reason, my ipad air 2 is seeing less use once this baby arrived. Yes, this laptop is more comfortable to use than an ipad most of the times. It's so light and solidly built that it 'begs' to be on you lap all the time.
2; Battery life. This is my first review ever on amazon, and it's the more than 11 hours of real work done without plugging in this laptop to anything that compelled me to write this review. This again is more time than what I get with the ipad air 2, but in this case, I am able to use office (mostly outlook, word and excel) browse the internet (using chrome the battery hog) and keeping a permanent youtube tab playing music. All at the same time. I had brightness at minimum, which is bright enough for me, but other than that no other power optimizations were made.
3; Build quality. The screen (I have the 1080p one) is awesome. It's true that it has a slight tint if you compare it to another screen (in my case a professional calibrated ips monitor), but if you are only looking at it and nothing else then you don't notice the tint. I don't do photography so I don't care weather the display is too warm or cold, as long as can tell the correct colors. Otherwise, it's one of the best screens I've used in a laptop, period. I've used the macbook air, and this laptop feels more solid that the Air, nuff said. The keyboard has excellent travel on par with the air for me. In short, the thing is metal and doesn't feel like it will break at all. It's solid and instills confidence despite the light weight.
4; Silence. Yes, this is a whole lot of reason on its own. This thing has no moving parts at all. Apart from the sound of your fingers pounding the keyboard you get zero noise, nada, from the laptop. It's metal so it shifts from very cold to the touch when completely off to warm when at full throttle but never uncomfortable or hot. I haven't tried it in the summer heat but I almost always use it on my lap and never got worried about the heat coming from it, because there is none. I also haven't once felt any cpu throttling, so having no fan is not affecting performance at all. What has always amazed me is the silence. Hit the switch button, screen comes on without even a click sound. Magical!!! I wish all other computers were this silent. The world would be a better place.
5; Price. Did you notice that this is cheaper than an ipad with half the storage? You'd ask why I keep on insisting on comparing it with an ipad, a device in a whole different category. Precisely because an ipad is usually a secondary device (or tertiary if you consider the phone) normally used as a companion to a full fledged computer. But this primary computing device is cheaper yet almost as portable as the ipad. Don't even bother to compare it to other laptops because non is going to beat this price. I also realize that because of it's weight and portability, I use it more and more in cases where I'd normally use the ipad. In short, the price point is unbeatable.
No review would be complete without outlining the negatives, and this product is no exception. For me the main negative is the keyboard. Specifically the lack of back-lighting. In the dark with lights off it becomes virtually unusable. Maybe one of those cheap usb led lamps may solve the problem but Asus clearly messed up a near perfect product by not placing a backlit keyboard on it. Even for $50 more I would have paid just to get the backlit keyboard on this fanless system.
Another negative would probably be the trackpad. Don't get me wrong, it's smooth, accurate and very responsive as the apple trackpads. The two issues I have with it however is the mechanical click which is very loud and and a bit hard. If like me, you tap to click then you won't find this mechanical clicking an issue as you will not use it. What always get's me however is the double-tap to drag. It works well, only that you have to do it really really fast for it to work and so far I haven't found a way to increase the double tap to drag period. The normal double tap can be adjusted properly in windows settings but if you want to double-tap and then drag after the second tap then you're out of luck. Only one speed is accepted, and that speed is ultra fast. Bummer!
CONCLUSION: I spent countless hours researching the perfect mobile computer. I looked at the more expensive options (the macbook, macbook air, xps 13 and even core i versions of the zenbook) but this configuration (the 1080p non-touch) turned out to be the best option. Fanless, light, robust build quality and very good performance. I could only be happier if the keyboard were backlit.
The first thing that I did was to update the machine by running Windows Update and Asus Live update. This will update Windows as well as all Asus drivers. I find that having up to date software usually makes things run more smoothly.
What I like:
* Lightweight at around 2.5 pounds. I've had some older laptops that weigh 4 or 5 pounds, and this laptop feels so much better.
* The screen is very sharp. It is like looking at a smartphone screen
* SSD is fast and has lots of space. This laptop comes with 256 GB of storage, which is double what other laptops in this price point have.
* Fanless. This laptop is quiet, and will not pull in any dust.
The flaws:
* The touchscreen doesn't work when waking from sleep. I found a workaround for this, which is to use hibernate instead of sleep. Of course that means the machine no longer instantly wakes up, but the resume is still fast enough for me (around 22 seconds).
* The power button is a key on the keyboard, and is located where the delete key normally is. I don't like this location, as it means I might accidently shut off the machine when I try to delete something. My workaround for this is to disable the power button in the power settings.
Note you can get to the settings for the workarounds above by typing "change lid" on the Windows Start menu, and then clicking on "Change what closing the lid does". Once there, change the settings for "When I press the power button" to "Do nothing". Also change the settings for "When I close the lid" to "Hibernate".
Overall 4.5 Stars.

BUILD QUALITY: 9/10
TL;DR: Premium build quality, interesting "plum" colour, mediocre keyboard and touch pad.
Everything about this laptop screams "premium". It is built of a sturdy aluminum with a very nice spiral finish on the lid and a soft matte finish on the bottom and inside. Something that the product pictures don't show is the slight purplish hue that you can see in certain light. This suprised me when I first unboxed the product, but the colour has definitely grown on me. I would describe it as a "plum" colour. The laptop is also extremely light, while still managing to feel as solid as a rock. Where it falls a little short is the keyboard. I didn't expect a lot from this laptop because of how thin it is, but the keyboard just isn't that great. It has a very short travel distance, so there is no room for a nice "click". Another minor detail to take note of is the power button, which is in the top left of the keyboard. I'd much prefer the power button to be off and away from the keyboard. The track pad is also just okay, with a some skipping and other tracking issues ever once in a while.
SCREEN: 10/10
TL;DR: Clear, sharp, bright, and beautiful. Easy to view outdoors. Not recommended for colour accurate work though.
I love the screen. The 1920x1080 resolution is perfect for a screen this size, and it is plenty bright enough for any situation. The matte screen also helps when outdoors in direct sunlight. It is also very sharp, making text a pleasure to look at, and the colours are vibrant, with good contrast. Although the colours are pleasing to look at, they are not accurate, so I would not recommend this for doing colour-sensitive work.
AUDIO: 7/10
TL;DR: Speakers get loud, but at max volumes they start to get tinny and distorted.
This is where the ZenBook lacks the most in this area, again, due to it's small size. The speakers face downwards, so the sound quality depends a lot on the surface that it is sitting on, but no matter what, you wont be getting great sound out of this laptop. They can get loud enough for most of my needs, but when you push them to the max volumes, they start to sound tinny and cheap. THere is only so much that Asus could do with a laptop this thin, but Apple has been making great speakers on their Macbooks for years.
PERFORMANCE: 9/10
TL;DR: In a package this thin and cheap, it was more than expected. Performs basic tasks without a hitch, and does things like photo-editing decently also. Not for gaming or video production. Battery life is awesome!
For most people, this is everything you need. The thing that blew me away was how fast the storage was. The Zenbook boots up in 15 seconds, and can open large programs like Photoshop faster than I have ever seen. Copying files and installing programs are also incredibly fast. The CPU is only a mobile processor, so it won't run any heavy stuff, and you definitely can't game on it, but I am willing to let that go because of the battery life you get in return. This thing lasts for at least 7 hours on medium-high brightness, doing everyday things like checking emails, streaming 1080p video, and some word processing. It feels like I never have to plug my laptop in! The laptop is also silent, because there are no fans. Don't let that scare you though, because this laptop never feels hot to the touch. It can get warm, but the area where your palms sit doesn't heat up, so I don't find myself with sweaty hands.
Overall, this laptop is for anybody who wants a thin and light laptop with decent performance, great battery life, an awesome screen, and is willing to forget about the little things like mediocre keyboard and trackpad, and the cheap-sounding speakers. And the best part is, you don't have to pay a fortune for it!
the charger is not working, I can only use it, if it is plugged in to the wall this leads me to believe that the product was fully tested before repackaged upon return back to the store. NOT happy that I am now going to have to return it to get a working cable.
