A classic controller, modernized for a new Era.

A classic controller, modernized for a new Era.
I'm a big fan of 8Bitdo’s gamepads. They have excellent build quality, combined with terrific control. Being able to use a wireless gamepad that’s a near perfect copy of the SNES pad wirelessly on my SNES and RETRON 5 is great. When they announced the SN30 Pro, my first reaction was it was a crazy idea. I didn’t think they would be able to incorporate full analog controls into an SNES controller shell (with triggers) and make it work.Well, they did.We now have a hybrid SNES/modern style controller that you can use on both classic and current games — and one that works quite well.As you can see from the photo, the controller shell is identical in size to the SNES30 gamepad, which itself was a perfect copy of the SNES. The directional pad, start/select, and A,B,X,Y buttons were just pushed upward to make room for the analog sticks at the bottom, which have the same horizontal layout as a Dual Shock controller. At the top, they were able to add L1,L2, R1,R2 triggers without any alteration to the controller shells thickness. And despite their slim design, they work very well. The lower L2, R2 triggers have a nice curve to them that allows you to rest your fingers comfortably on the controller, giving you a nice grip, despite the slim profile. If you have very large hands and thick fingers, this may not be for you, unless you’ve learned to adjust to the SNES pads smaller size. You’re probably wondering how good the analog sticks are. Third party analog sticks are often known for their poor sensitivity and huge dead zones, meaning you get very imprecise control, particularly with first person shooters. I’m happy to say these are very good. Much better than I thought they would be. Fairly close in quality to a Dual Shock 4, Xbox One and Switch Controller. I played Call of Duty, Wolfenstein 2, The Last of Us Remastered, and several other games with them and had no issue. Even for fine control like sniping, they were good. 8BitDo didn’t cheap out.The controller can be used on modern platforms. There is a firmware update on 8BitDo’s website to use the controller on the Nintendo Switch, and if you get the Mayflash Magic S adapter, you can use them wirelessly on your PS3 and PS4. They also work great on pc. There is just the smallest bit of lag I noticed. Very small, don’t know how many milliseconds, but enough that you wouldn’t want to use it on an online fast twitch game like an FPS or fighting game. Single player is fine though. And of course, all your classic games play just as great as they did with the SNES30 Pro. The sticks are placed well, to avoid getting in the way when they’re not needed. The controller also shuts off after a few minutes when not in use, to conserve battery life. It’s not a cheap controller at around $50.00, but the build quality is up to the level of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo’s.I was pleasantly surprised by this. If you’ve dreamed of a hybrid gamepad that has the best of both worlds, this is the controller you should buy.

Well, they did.

We now have a hybrid SNES/modern style controller that you can use on both classic and current games — and one that works quite well.

Third party analog sticks are often known for their poor sensitivity and huge dead zones, meaning you get very imprecise control, particularly with first person shooters.
