After all this, I was nervous about shelling out $230 for the Deco P9. From my experience with the TL-WPA7510, I saw the powerline connection was excellent, so I took the risk.
PRO
- Setup of the whole system took just a few minutes. It could hardly be easier.
- Right next to one of the Deco P9s not directly connected to the DSL router, my Internet download speed is about 40-50Mbps out of a possible 75Mbps. (I confirmed by comparing download speed a device wired directly to the router. Also, I tested three WiFi devices: a Lenovo Ideapad, an HP laptop, and a Samsung S7. ) While the WiFi is not saturating the Internet connection, it is a big improvement, and it is sufficient for our house. I do not know how other people are getting faster speeds.
- I get a decent signal even outside my house all the way to the sideway. This improves the connection for my outdoor cameras, and I can listen to streaming music while I mow the lawn.
- As I move through the house, my Android Samsung S7 phone switches access points within a few seconds, even though 802.11r roaming is disabled.
- Parental controls allowing setting bedtime hours per person, which is a group of devices, though it does not allow temporary “bonus” exceptions.
- Each Deco P9 has two Ethernet ports.
- It’s easy to set up a guest WiFi network. Guests do not have access to the private network. (I haven’t tried it yet.)
CON
- The price is $230---up from $200 just a few weeks ago. Only Amazon sells the Deco P9.
- Deco P9 does not have a web interface. You must use the mobile app. (Other Deco models have a web interface.)
- Deco P9 has no WPS button
- It's far from obvious on any given moment whether the Deco P9 is using WiFi or powerline for backhaul. The app should show a visual graph of the access points and all connected devices to show how they are connected.
- It is nice the app shows real-time bandwidth usage, but it updates too fast. For example, my Roku alternates rapidly alternates between idle and 20Mbps, and I would rather have a 30-second average. Also, it does not show the overall network usage.
- While the parental controls are appreciated, they are limited. For example, I cannot separate limits on school and education vs. entertainment. I can set devices to individual children, but three of my kids share some devices
- The Deco P9 is apparently not compatible with TP-Link’s older powerline adapter TL-WPA7510.
NOTE
- There are very few settings available for WiFi. It’s just the name and password. You cannot individually name or enable each band (2.4GHz, 5GHz). You cannot choose the channel or channel width. (The channel width is always wide.) This is nice and simple, and so far, it has worked well.
- Some have complained about the privacy policy. After digging into it, it seems reasonable. For example, it collects host names visited only as needed for parental controls and monitoring.
- All three Deco P9 units in the pack are completely interchangeable.
TO BE DETERMINED
- How long until TP-Link calls the Deco P9 end of life and stops issuing updates for firmware and the app?
I have a 2 story that is about 80 feet end to end and I have never been able to get decent wifi throughout the house using wifi repeaters. I end up having to switch to different wifi networks depending on where I am in the house.
The Deco Mesh system is a game changer. One at each end of the house and one in the middle and I can now roam seamlessly through the house and on the front and back porches with 4 to 5 bars of wifi everywhere and without dropping a beat, even on a Zoom call. I also like that they backhaul Ethernet through the house electric wires instead of sucking up half their speed repeating my signal back to the main unit. I have used TPL Powerline blocks for a long time and I am very satisfied with their ethernet over power line performance, which was a big part of my decision to try TPL's mesh wifi system.
Fast Roaming is the thing that does the trick. It lets clients disconnect from one Deco and connect to another without losing packets. Those clients have to understand the 802.11r protocol for this to work. I have HP, Dell, and Lenovo laptops, 3 Vizio smart TVs of various ages, Google Home minis, several generations of iPads, a Microsoft Surface (5th gen) and Samsung phones that all work well with the mesh network. I have one 2018 Samsung UN75NU6950 that refuses to connect. If I turn off fast roaming it connects but it disables seamless roaming for everything else. That's really my only complaint, otherwise it is great coverage and speed seamlessly everywhere in my house.
The app is not great and it is required to set these things up. You have to have a tablet or phone running Android or iOS and you have to install their app. There was no web interface built in to the device like you get with a router until a very recent firmware update, and even with the new interface it is view only for most everything. The app is very "consumery" so if you're a tech nerd like I am you will be frustrated at the lack of options and information it provides. It gets you up and running and lets you enable/disable some functions but it's really basic. I am running it in Access point mode with my own external router, not as a router (which it is capable of doing) so there may be more options in that mode but in AP mode it's very basic.
Overall, a fantastic product. Even with the few negative things I've mentioned I would buy this same Deco P9 again.
Now the not so good. Your main deco only has one available network port. There are two there, but one is for the in from modem. If you are like me and have several devices near there, then you must have a network switch or be able to connect wirelessly for the rest of your devices. Fortunately, I had a switch. Secondly, I hate having another dang App on my phone. How many apps do I need? And really, how often will I be using this app after the set up? What was wrong with the 192.168.x.x log in process? Next, nowhere I found did it say it used my electrical circuit to transmit, and maybe it doesn't. But the second step of the setup on the App clearly says, you can't use a UPS, surge protector, etc. and must connect all Decos to same circuit. Well, I thought, what good is that? One side of my house is on a different circuit than the other, or bedrooms, kitchen, etc. After repacking to consider a return, I decided that I would at least try it first. Well, it did work (so far) on different circuits, so that's very good.
I am skeptical it is truly a wireless mesh system like Meraki and instead using your electrical circuit. Maybe it doesn't, since I didn't research it, but signs points there. Overall, I am pleased so far because I do have fast internet throughout my house now. Knowing what I know now, I might research a more compact electrical circuit type instead of these, but I've got them now.
Top reviews from other countries
Setup was theoretically easy. Initially I had problems maintaining a stable internet connection. Naturally I spent time troubleshooting the more complex possibilities instead of doing the obvious. I unplugged the ISP provided modem and the main Deco unit. I left them unplugged for a couple of minutes. Plugged the ISP modem first and then the Deco. Problem solved! It may not matter but I connected the top jack of the main deco to the modem and the lower one to my network switch with eight ports.
If there is a weakness, it is the app. It is too simplistic and fails to provide advanced options. The average user may find it sufficient and be satisfied but I found it frustrating for troubleshooting purposes. I wish, for instance, it would allow me to know how good the connections are between the various Decos and not just a "healthy" rating. It also lacks WPS to quickly add devices.
That being said we live in an "L" shaped bungalow and the router is at the far end in our living room. It is a challenging topography to ensure a great wi-fi connection throughout our house. Inside the house the weakest spot in the lower level now receives over 70 Mbps, before it receive none ! I will need to add more Deco units (trying the E4) to extend effectively to our garage in order to increase bandwidth to devices that I have outdoors and in the garage.
In the end what I needed was an improved Wi-Fi network in my house as we have over 60 Wi-Fi devices including four smart home hubs and a variety of Amazon Alexa devices, that connect to it, and the Deco Powerline has solved all my issues. So far I am very pleased! Video streaming no longer buffers.
Tip: I used the same SSID (Network name) and password as I had on my old router. I did not need to configure any of my devices though I did have to restart some. Depending on how many devices, I found it took some time for devices to rejoin the network. Remember to disconnect the modem and the main Deco for a couple of minutes if you have Internet issues during setup.
Issues:
- If you have older cameras and devices which have connectivity issues, turn off "fast roaming" in the advanced settings. Fast roaming is taken advantage of by the client and not the router/APs. Older clients have issues with
- Can't turn off the 5 ghz network ( no control)
- Only a single SSID is displayed for both bands.
- Can't identify via the app the load on access points or which devices are connected to them.
- Can't identify the speed on individual access points.
- Sometimes the app shows APs as disconnected when apparently they are not.
- No WPS
Despite the limitations of the application that manages the system, the connectivity has been excellent and stable. I added the Deco E4 successfully to this set.

After their router died, I started investigating mesh systems and came across this mesh/powerline setup. reviews looked good and on paper it seems to accomplish what we needed, that is a reliable wifi signal on the third floor, in the basement and in the detached garage. I believe the powerline functionality is basically a secondary/backup connection process and is not really used, but nonetheless, this looked to do the trick. The main concern was getting wifi to the garage, which is too far from the house to pick up a decent signal on a traditional router.
The setup process was pretty painless, my tech illiterate parents were mostly able to do it themselves, though I had to set up the 2nd and 3rd units. So far a month and a half later, no complaints. We have a strong connection within the garage as well as the basement, and my parents have been able to hook all of their internet-connected toys up to the system. I'm hoping this proves to be a good purchase in the long term, but we'll see.
Cons - very selective to the power source outlets. Takes several attempts to find that perfect placement for each router. A little unstable sometimes, but I still would recommend.
