the inital setup will take a while (and if you have terrabytes of had drive space, it can take days for the system to inspect the drives initially), but after that it's a matter of how do you want it to be set up, and load the approperiate software.
It has massive expansion capability, and it works with Windows or Linux.
Wish I had done it sooner.
Some people do well with the 2 bay unit, but going to 4 bays lets you increase your capacity and support more drives. It is cheaper to populate the unit with 4x6TB for a lower price than 2x12TB. This 4 bay unit that will support various flavors of RAID. I run mine with 4 Western Digital Red Pro 6TB 3.5inch 256mb cache operating at 7200 rpm in a RAID 5 configuration netting me 18TB of storage with 6TB of RAID parity backup for a total of 24TB of raw storage.
There is a choke point on the gigabit Ethernet port with a published 112 MB/s encrypted sequential reading and writing throughput via the device and your network. For most people however, you will never see it if you don't do huge file transfers often much larger than a PC's hard drive size.
Synology has a good suite of apps to tailor your unit to your specific needs. I run an app that lets me run my unit my personal "cloud" and I can access my files remotely, and link them with an app for both the iPhone & Android. it will go to sleep, and spin down the drives when not in use. Reduces the runtime-hours and maximizes the service life.
As an IT professional and large campus network engineer, I find it as an elegant small package. For those who don't want to have to constantly pay an IT professional, the beginning user will find Synology's support page sufficient to run the unit. There is a lot of documentation and "how-to" videos out there so you can confidently operate the unit efficiently without too much trouble.
Conclusion: I would highly recommend this unit and consider this over the other 2 units. It is a solid item, and will reduce your headache and labor costs. Once you get it set up, it can just go with minimal effort.
