Product Description
An Infinite Hub of Productivity Possibilities Designed to handle diverse workflows, the Mercury Elite Pro Dual - USB-C will quickly become the core of your digital desktop. Its dual hardware RAID drive bays use 2.5-inch SSDs and/or 3.5-inch HDDs. With two USB-C ports delivering real world speed up to 1026MB/s, you can rip through system and Time Machine backups, archive projects, and transfers of HD photos and large format video footage. Another two USB Type-A ports let you connect a universe of USB peripherals, plus provide charging power for your phone, camera, and tablet. And with a whisper quiet fan, front panel drive status LEDs, and a USB-C cable, the Mercury Elite Pro Dual - USB-C is the convenient do-it-all solution that puts you in control of your desktop. Adaptable Flexibility From high demand production studios to your office, the Mercury Elite Pro Dual - USB-C seamlessly integrates with any work environment. Install your choice of 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SSDs or HDDs and even combine the speed of a SSD and with the cost-effective storage capacity of an HDD. With built-in hardware RAID, you have four drive set-up choices. Independent (JBOD) keeps the drives as two separate and independent volumes RAID 0 (stripe) for optimal performance and maximum speed use RAID 1 (mirror) for the security and peace of mind of mirrored data Span combines the drive capacities to create one extra-large storage volume Done with the drives but need the hub connectivity? Eject the Mercury Elite Pro Dual - USB-C's drives and any external drives connected to it from your computer in a single click with our free downloadable Dock Ejector app. It ensures all data has been written before any drive is unmounted to protect against data loss. It will even warn you from accidentally ejecting an in-use drive.

First off, the fan on this unit is very quiet. The noise, as some others have mentioned, is down to the hard drives themselves. If you're using SSDs this would be extremely quiet, if using traditional spinning drives it will depend on the drives. With some older Toshiba drives inside the noise is very low; with some recently-purchased WD Black drives (which make a lot more noise when seeking, and give a "thunk" sound every now and again) it's loud enough to be annoying.
I've got a dual-drive Thunderbolt enclosure from OWC as well, and used BlackMagic Speed Test to test write and read speeds for a RAID-0 setup using the traditional hard drives mentioned above. The results are within 3% for both reads and writes. This means the hard drives themselves are the limiting factor, and both USB 3.1 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt are capable of extracting maximum performance from them. As the Thunderbolt version of this enclosure is significantly more expensive, I can't see any reason to purchase it unless you're using SSDs (and even then, as both enclosures rely on SATA interfaces for the drives, you'll want to check the drives' SATA specs to see if Thunderbolt would be faster even with SSDs.)

OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dual (0 TB) 3-Port USB Hub, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (USB-C)
I wanted great storage and SSD speeds.
Using 2 16TB enterprise-level (this is very important) HDDs in a RAID-0 setup. I am getting Read and Write speeds of 500-530MBps.
Eg. I transferred a project folder sized 4.47TB in 2hrs 35mins
which is great. I had ordered and returned a LACIE 2Big raid which claimed a ceiling speed of 440 MBps and i had to return it as it could go beyond 125 MBps.
It's just been a day since It's up and running so far it has exceeded my expectations in terms of performance.
The only thing is hate about it and other RAID enclosures are the 3-4inch cable they provide.
Definitely recommend to any content/film-makers out there who needs a lot of space and speed for their needs.
