The keyboard and trackpad both work decently well (the trackpad is not the best I've used for a laptop, but it works just fine), with the caveat, the button clicks don't work, but you can get the same effect but tapping with two finger for right click and tapping with one finger as left click. The screen is a solid Full-HD IPS panel, and the lapdock battery does slow charge the phone while in Dex mode.
Also, you might see a notification icon indicating that you should use genuine Samsung Dex product (but you can just x it out), but it doesn't stop the lapdock from fully functioning. Also, Wifi-Direct doesn't work, but you can use Smart View.
1. In order to get Dex to fully launch with sound and not get an error that states their is an error with the display you will need to make sure the lapdock is powered down and connect the phone to the lpadock first. If you do not I havde found that you most likely will get an error about the display and sound on the lapdock will not work. If this happens hold down the power on the lapdock until the unit cycles with the phone plugged in. When you do this it works for me every time.
2. The track pad is usable, not the best but usabel. One thing I have found is that you cannot click and hold. This will make it where you cannot resize or move the windows. The workaround for this is to use touchpad ode on the phone.
Overall this thing works very well and is well built.
the display is amazing and the keyboard is top notch. HDMI out works to duplicate your display as long as you have a micro HDMI adapter. and even all the function keys on the keyboard work. For a device that was not designed for this and the fact that is 5 years old is impressive. This will allow me to not have to take my personal laptop anymore when traveling.
My unit was brand new in the factory box with power supply and all cables needed. Very happy with this though I do believe the Nexdock may be a better option at a cheaper cost when the new model releases in a few months.
There are some quirks, but there are going to be with something this niche. You charge it on one side, connect it to your computer/phone/toaster on the other. You can't charge from device. It does miracast, but at 30fps (cool in a pinch, but you'll never use it). It does displayport over usb type c at a full 60. Panel is not the best for color reproduction, but more than enough for anything that isn't graphic design work. Keyboard feels nice, and is optionally backlit (with a few brightnesses to toggle through). Speakers are less tinny than you'd assume, and completely adequate for enjoying youtube (there's a headphone jack for anything else). Trackpad seems fine to me, but I avoid trackpads when possible (not a trackpad aficionado by any means). If you're here, it means you need a type-c interface to a computer that either doesn't have one, or could use another for some reason. Buy this. Nothing else does what it does. I would love it if laptops that came in two parts became a thing, but I am not going to hold my breath :D.
Aside: for fun I brought it to the office and we plugged it into a bunch of different machines. The only one to give us a little but of trouble was a MacBook, but we figured it out and got it working. It also works great with my Lumia 950XL.
But with all that, the dock is great. I mean, it wasn't really intended for the Note 9 so its not the dock's fault that its not working as intended with a third party phone. I mean beggars can't be choosers at this point and I get to use my phone as a laptop which is a great bonus on my part. And I did get it for $124 so it really is quite a bargain. Hopefully on the next samsung dex iterations, it will have a much better compatibility with this dock. With that said, I'll probably have to stay to using Samsung phones for a long time knowing that I bought this device. I just wish there was a way to have a custom skin for this as well as a way to trigger dex wirelessly.
