A peaceful Sunday morning in Rutland is shattered when a dead body is discovered on the rocks at Normanton Church.

The victim has been laid out in a crucifixion pose, facing the altar. DI Caroline Hills is certain there’s a religious connection — one which threatens the tranquility of life in the area.

Interesting characters, likeable or not. Are we supposed to love every character? The story would then be far from realistic or likeable. We see Caroline as a flawed human who carries on in spite if her foibles. As we all do. The investigation carries us down the prerequisite dead ends and helps the reader feel the disappointment and frustration the investigators feel. There is suspense outside of the case, as well, that added depth to the storyline. I would absolutely recommend....and now I'm on to the next in the series!

Read so many of your books, I thought I'd give this series a try. I liked it, (of course). The ending was the best best part. Very sad background story line. I liked Dex, but I thought Caroline was quite self centered.
Would recommend to anyone who just wants to relax in their comfy chair for the weekend and read.

DI Caroline Hills is new to the small county police and she is finding it hard to settle. She is used to London and how things worked at the Met. A body has been found and the team has taken on the case. But will Caroline be able to find the killer before she loses her chance? Who wanted the victim dead? Will they be able to find out the truth?
A good read. Caroline is a strong independent woman but she does need to try and fit in as I think that she will be a great DI that will only lead her team to great things. Great characters. Got to love Dex he certainly is the calm member of the team that Caroline trusts.

I am looking forward to reading more books by Adam Croft. Each new author brings a really different way of explaining and getting to know the characters. I tend to stay with authors I know. I guess it's so i know I will like the books. No surprise! This was a really likable story. Kept me interested. Pick it up and give yourself a fun new author too, or an author you already like.

Book 1. It was not a bad book, it did seem to take a while to get moving. I’m not certain if I just was expecting more fireworks at the start or I haven’t read a book by this author before. It started improving on keeping my attention as it moved farther into the story. I’ll try the next book in the series now that I have become a bit more familiar with the style of writing. Plus, I need to see what happens to the woman detective in the future

I usually make the culprit from the start and although it wouldn't be obvious to most readers this time was no different.
One or two of the characters in this book were good. I can just never see why the police in these books cannot seem to see the obvious and remember the little things in interviews. I also cannot see why a person would not confide personal problems to their spouse. My husband died young. He's been gone twenty five years and I still miss being able to run into his arms with my problems.

The story was intriguing with a tough murder mystery to solve but the lead character also has cancer and has not told her family about it.

This book was very fast paced. It was well written and a story that could possibly be true. I really enjoyed this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Series of Stories, Particularly for those who know Rutland

As a child in the 1960s, I lived in Edith Weston and played in the fields and along the banks of the River Gwash which are now underneath Rutland Water.

It was an idyllic and tranquil place, although nearby RAF North Luffenham was a Thor nuclear missile base during the Cuban Missile Crisis and would have been at ‘ground zero’ in any conflict!

It is interesting to read a story which is set in an area I once knew. I think it is well written and holds your attention well. I will probably buy others in the series.

Here Adam Croft brings new life to the well used storyline of a police officer with personal issues that are affecting their home and working life. We have a fictional police unit in a real location and the book involves an interesting and intriguing list of characters.
Well worth a read.
