5.0 out of 5 starsBest performance motherboard for a White-Themed Build
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2016
This motherboard is absolutely amazing. So many fan headers! This has always been my biggest issue with other motherboards, often times topping out at 4 or less fan headers. This thing has fan-headers for days! It even has a Dedicated Water Pump header, as well as 2 dedicated CPU fan headers. On top of 2 chassis fan headers and what they refer to as an "Assistant" fan header (probably for more fan direction). and these are just the ones at the top of the motherboard by the socket. I haven't even found the rest of them yet :P. The best, though, is that EVERY single fan header is a 4-pin PWM capable pinout. Means TOTAL control if you get the right fans.

Socket space was a bit concerning, there are some VRM's rather close to the socket that almost interfered with mounting the cooler I chose, but they were just barely short enough to make it work. So keep that in mind if you wanna use a beefy air cooler or a special water block that extends farther out than normal.

Installation was easy, if you've ever installed a motherboard before. straightforward, no special screws needed or whatever. The cover over the rear io-panel has cutouts that make any screw perfectly functional for the purpose of fastening the mobo to the case.

My one and only qualm about this mobo (and this will likely only affect a minute portion of the users) is that it only has 2 traditional Video Output ports, even though the graphics chipset can support up to 4 (I believe, 3 at the least). I know in the near future, and even now, the USB type C can be used as a third monitor output if need be, but I find that somewhat inconvenient, as I was hopin gat least for a third port, be it a second HDMI or even a VGA output would have been fine.

The XMP option on this motherboard worked seamlessly with the crucial RAM I bought, and even with a non-k i5-6500 processor, I was able to squeeze a small 15% (self-advertised, says so on the splash screen when I boot it up) overclock, so that's a neat little feature. Had no problem installing and booting to the M.2 using an NVMe Samsung SM951, and God damn is this thing fast. It boots up in under 7 seconds from off, Including the amount of time it takes me to activate numlock and type in my pin. Absolutly fantastic.

I'm very excited for the future of this build, as I'll be doing some expanding once the GTX 1080 has a White Aftermarket shroud option.

Very satisfied with this build, and this motherboard made it all possible.

1.0 out of 5 starsCool Motherboard with only a few issues...
Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2016
Good board and from what I understand, built for reliability. The white color is also cool compared to every other board which is always black. I love the fact there are a LOT of fan ports on the motherboard but I think I would have preferred more USB 3.0 (1x) and 2.0 (4x) ports on the rear. There is a USB TUF port and 2x 3.1 (C and A) but don't put anything into those ports except a TUF device or storage (respectively). I've had no issue except an odd double-boot that I'm trying to figure out. It POSTS, pauses, reboots, then seems to POST all over again.

UPDATE 27/8/16: Stuck on post. The motherboard was working fine but then things got strange with occasional lock ups and odd crashes. I originally attributed the issues to Windows 10 until on startup, the POST took forever (3-5 minutes) to boot. Now, I'm stuck with looking at the "American Megatrends" logo on the screen, and that's it. It won't allow me to access the BIOS so I'm stuck with a dead motherboard. The support ASUS provides is via email and they are SLOW to respond. First email had me reset the bios which didn't do anything. Then I unplugged all the components and tried to reboot first with nothing, then one component at a time. As always, I'm stuck looking at this logo.

This is the main board in my new rig, with Intel 6700K and Samsung 950 parts. It all works great, but the technology has changed so much over the last 18 months that I spent quite a while puzzling over everything. Here are some hints:

1. Read the very detailed instruction book before you begin. The second part of the instruction book covers the BIOS, which I found mostly self-explanatory. The first part of the instructions were indispensable. The instruction book for your case will probably be helpful too.

2. Look over all the parts that come in the box, and understand what they all do before assembling things.

3. Be aware that you'll need to install the standoffs in your case, and assemble whatever cooling solution you're using BEFORE mounting the motherboard in the case. I didn't do this, and I had to remove and reinstall (twice, sigh). Silly me.

4. There are lots of connector pins on the board for various things. They are labeled, but hard to read without a bright flashlight. The instruction book has a very good picture map of them all.

5. The package comes with *everything* that I needed, including the M.2 host adapter board, thermistors to monitor interior case temperatures. This package is loaded!

6. The two assist fans are hard to figure out. One goes on the top of the motherboard, in almost the exact center. You remove a metal cover that ends up being a keychain. That's what the little keychain cable was for! Told you it comes with everything. The other assist fan goes in the back, near the rear panel USB connectors. It's not hard at all to install, but neither is it obvious. I puzzled over this for a while before I figured out how to screw the fan to the plastic slider piece. Be sure to observe the airflow direction of the assist fans as you install them.

7. It comes with very competent on-board video, but of course you might want your own GTX 980 card instead!

8. With Windows installed on the M.2 drive, the thing boots up in like 4 seconds. Web pages appear instantly. This 6th generation technology is a huge step up from what we put up with only a year ago!

9. There are lots of options for overclocking, changing voltages, etc. BEWARE: If you don't know what you're doing here, you can do permanent damage. Best to work with someone who has done this before.

Hope you have fun building!

5.0 out of 5 stars Asus Z170S Super Camo Motherboard

Asus Z170S White Camouflage wow just wow... Installed this board under water (H105) in my Lian Li 2006 case I am so stoked on how quiet it is. I started out frustrated by dropping the motherboard on my white shag carpet it took me hours to find it ;) no seriously that white camo is the sickest thing Ive ever seen. It was plug and play all the way I used a G4400 processor so i can upgrade later, 8 gigs of 33 dollar crucial DDR4 memory and the M.2 NVME 950 pro stick of gum ssd hardrive. Installed windows 7 and my games in a few hours. I was using an Asus 990fx Pro r2.0 motherboard before this with an 8350 cpu o/c 4.8 ghz and 16gigs DDR3 . I gotta say my new setup does just as good if not faster 3.3ghz and 8gigs ram. This motherboard is way overkill for me right now by having alot of extras that I wont use for a while like Thunderbolt, Sli video cards, usb 3.1, and on board diagnostics. I planned on this build to be up gradable for the next few years so I can add items as i go.

I received the delivery and the shipping box was completely crushed (I haven't seen a box that badly damaged since prom night) , I opened the shipping box to find this hybrid carbon fiber / cardboard motherboard box unscathed. The motherboard box is incredible it's not made of paper it's like plastic wood Kevlar carbon fiber or something it's soooo strong and well built. The motherboard has 4 stickers to remove, 3 are clear on the heat sinks and one is put over the Lan port. The stickers on the 2 camo heat sinks are tough to see but pick at the corners you'll get em. The bios is awsome you can adjust everything except for the clock.. the clock....? 10/10 for 164 bux i would buy again

Update 6/13/2018
This board is still amazing. I bought a new Lian-Li case for it, Upgraded the CPU to an I7-6700k over clocked to 4.8gig,
Installed 16gigs of Hyper-x Savage 2666 memory overclocked to 2940, and put in a modest MSI GTX 1060 6gig......
I cant tell you how smooth and flawless this journey has been thus far... Luv ASUS

First one i bought died two weeks after i bought it when the system just didn't boot up one day.
Amazon sent a replacement and now that one has died 9 months later. It tried to do the initial start up by spinning up the fans. DId this 4 or 5 times before i had to unplug the system for fear of it breaking. after waiting a few minutes to try and turn it back on, nothing.
I am so glad i get to pay shipping to get this out to asus again, because i feel like i didn't pay enough for the first time for a TUFF motherboard. I don't know if i have crap luck or if quality control is taking a dive. Hopefully the third one last at least 5 years as advertised.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good so far, but on 2nd board.
Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2016

Pros: I took a chance and ordered this Mobo for a new build, knowing that some of hardware wasn't on the approved vendor list.
I put it inside a Fractal Design R5-Blk with an i7 6700k, Gskill 3200 F4-3200C16D-16GTZ, MSI 970 ME...and even got bold enough to try an NH-D15 air cooler. To my surprise, it all fit and fired right up. I updated the bios first, then rebooted and went to work changing the bios settings accordingly. Enabled XMP and the memory came in at the correct speed (3200) and then enabled to m.2 sata module for my m.2 850 evo and got into installing windows 10.

The bios interface is easy to understand so that you can find/change things as needed. Happy to get this board and the definitely looks cool to boot!

Cons: I have always used a board with "clip-in" Dimm modules on the top and bottom. This board has a "fixed" lower that makes getting sticks in and out a little difficult and creates pressure that I don't really like on the sticks.

3 days after the build started, my system went down. I couldn't get one of the memory sticks to post anymore and thought that was the problem. RMA'd and new memory bought and I still couldn't get any posts with Dimm B1 or B2 used, (Only A1, A2 worked with 2 sticks in single channel mode) so I called Asus up. They advised something went wrong in the B modules and to RMA the board back. I tested both initial ram sticks and 1 was bad, so it seems the module took the ram stick with it. Asus rep also started to give me the run around for not having "approved" memory. Note that the system worked perfectly up until it broke. (Was not overclocked)

Other Thoughts: I was happy to see that everything worked fine initially and that the NH-D15 cooler it fit! Maybe I just got a bad board, but the new one from Amazon got here quickly as always! The extra chassis/assist fan connects helped a lot to add low dB fans around to keep everything nice and cool when gaming!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, superb cooling board with best components as expected...every time. TUF is now what it always has been.
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2016

Everything you REALLY need on a board. Only supports down to lowest of 2133mhz RAM or above, but it's O.C.ing is very easy, board software is renowned for a reason and it has 2 (TWO!) USB 3.0 headers on board, like most if not all the Sabertooth's have. 3 PCIEx16 slots, not 4 so design your build knowing that. TUF boards have always been my personal favorites because they're easy to work on, have what I can't live without and I have never, ever had a bad one...I build computers to sell custom, and I've spent over 2 decades seeing lots of things fail. I still have my 1st Sabertooth TUF build up and running constantly to this day... 8 or 9 years now. I expect nothing less from this board..heavy, stays very cool with an OC'd i7 6700K (board runs 30 to 36 cel. under load) with 2x GTX 980 Ti in SLI pushing it to work harder than normal. I've had recent problems with 2 high end Asus boards (1 Deluxe RMA'd and 1 Maximus VIII DOA (code "00")), surprisingly, so "I'm dancing with the one who brung me". Oh, and it looks really cool, too :-)

3.0 out of 5 stars Motherboard was OverVolting my CPU
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2016
Style: SABERTOOTH Z170 SVerified Purchase
Motherboard voltages weren't accurate and it was overvolting my CPU. The voltages were also all over the place, even with Speed Step and Turbo disabled. This board basically ruined my CPU, luckily Amazon and Intel took care of me, I got a replacement motherboard and a new CPU is on the way from Intel. Be careful with this board, it was giving my i-7 6700K at stock no xmp 1.345-1.400volts. Yea.. After a month of this my CPU started to show degrade and was throttling for no reason, ran some test and failed. After I installed XTU and using a Multimeter Tool, I was able to confirm the readings the BIOS was giving me were false. I have since ordered a Asus Roc Maximus VIII Hero and I hope Asus doesn't let me down this time around. I thought about switching board makers but really Asus makes the best boards and meets all my needs, they deserve another chance. It's unfortunate and these things happen though, I understand that. I just wish it didn't damage my CPU but like I said, Intel took care of it so "no harm, no foul". I am lucky I caught this early on is all I know, counting my blessings here. For a minute neither company was wanting to take any responsibility, which was scary considering how much I invested here but it all worked out. Hopefully I can put this all behind me once I get my new motherboard and cpu installed next week. If you have a Sabertooth Z170 S, might be worth while to check those voltages with Intels XTU and if you can get a hold of a Mutimeter watch a youtube video on how to test your volts, its actually not hard to do, that would be a good idea not just for this board but all boards in the future. I was really surprised XTU was more accurate than CPU-Z for voltage checking, who'd thought an Intel program would read Intel chips better? lol The one thing from this ordeal is I learned quite a bit which will help me in the future as far as troubleshooting PC issues.

Negatives aside, there were some positives to this board. While I did have a bad experience, this doesn't mean you will too. So don't panic or assume this board is bad. Asus is number 1 for motherboards, they didn't get there by making boards like the one I received, as much as they inconvenienced me now, I still stand behind them loyally. It is why I bought another board from them. This board, the Sabertooth Z170 S has a lot of great features, 6 system fans, 2 cpu fans, 1 water pump fan, q led zone that lights up to inform you of errors and the overall construction of the board seemed very high quality. UFEI is easy to navigate and has both an easy mode and advanced mode, great for both entry level and experts. It was packaged nicely and came with some cool stuff like stickers/decals. The board color was beautiful, the artic camo really worked well with my build and having LED's reflected nicely on it. The board was on the flimsy side though which made me nervous, it flexes alittle bit when placing in RAM modules, or your GPU. This is common though with lots of motherboards though, just expected a TUF board to be thicker. Another thing I disliked is how the GPU on slot 1 sat closely to the CPU and it also sat over the Q-Led Zone, which made them not so helpful if you have a GPU. The Audio was crisp HD and all the chokes/capacitors on the board appeared to be good quality, the soldering itself on the board again, was good quality. There are a lot of positives to be said here but something was wrong. I never could figure out why the board was sending out various high watts but there are so many little pins/senors that if one is slightly damaged could offset the whole system. Like I said, these things happen. I was pretty upset last week but have since calmed down and come to my senses. I built this PC for myself and I had another PC for backup, so it was detrimental. It could of been worse. I still love Asus and hope this next motherboard lives up to the reputation we all know and expect. Thank you for reading and big thank you to Amazon for being the best company in the business and handling me with care.

I absolutely love this motherboard. I am so glad I did the research and chose this one. I had zero issues with installation, BIOS flash, settings in BIOS, and AI Suite is a great controller. I also love the fact that I don't need a PWM hub to control the fans. This mobo had plenty for me.

The only issues I did have were very minuscule.
1. The TUF badge was missing a screw. No big deal, I used the fan anyways.
2. The fan to relace the TUF badge only had 3 screws also! It is built this way because the spot for the 4th one hold the cables. I removed the cables from this slot to hide the wires underneath them. Still, kind of a pain and they should have just put a 4th screw spot there.

I liked the fact that this came with plenty of dust covers. I even had enough to cover the front panel of my case, both USB's, audio and mic slots.
It also came with plenty of extra stuff, like an M.2 raid adapter, if you wanted to use one.

The assist fans are hardly noticeable, unless you have the panel off and all other fans off. I never do either of those. I cannot hear them at all, but in case you were wondering, there is a slight wine. No big deal though, I promise you will not hear them.

I cannot stress enough that if this is your first build, READ THE MANUAL! DO YOUR RESEARCH. and don't believe 99% of the negative reviews here. They are full of it!

Overall, I would highly recommend this motherboard.

UPDATE 7-11-16
Easy to OC. OC'd to 4.5 and stable with XMP. Absolutely no hassle at all. Temps are fine, I never hear the fans on the mobo, and I never see any problems in CPUID or anything else when monitoring under stress tests and benchmarks. Current voltage set to 1.285 and I have had zero issues with the motherboard.

UPDATE 8-15-16
The only thing that truly does bother me is the missing screw for the TUF badge. I wanted to remove the PCIE fan (assistant fan 2) and replace with the TUF badge but I just could not stand the look of one screw missing. Also, The motherboard keeps my NZXT Hue+ Light on all the time, and flashes my PC's power light when in sleep mode. It's a bit annoying, but as with anything else, I found a work around for it ;)

UPDATE 11-25-16
Still no issues. I did remove the 40mm PCIE fan. It's pretty pointless. Because of the Corsair Link cable, I don't notice the missing screw for the badge. Plenty of long screws for the fan (extra, in fact) but missing one for that damn bage....
Also, My old pic did have a Phanteks Evolv ATX, but I hated it. Dust Dust Dust and horrible airflow. Not bad in terms of temps, but horrible recirculation and too many open vents all around the case, even the dust filter for the front is open where the handle to pull it off is. Horrible design. If you are looking for a great case, go with Fractal Design Define S.

Beowulf
4.0 out of 5 stars What you should expect from Asus

First off, I really like Asus Motherboards. If I'm getting a motherboard, it will most likely be one from Asus. They have quality customer service reps even if it takes a few minutes to talk to one of them. And their build quality is some of the best and the TUF Series are definitely no exception. Let's get into it.

What makes a TUF board so TUF? Their Thermal Armor and metal backplate. I really like these, because I feel very confident when holding the board that I won't damage it in any way. While I always handle my components with care, this is just a more solid affirmation that I'm less likely to ruin something. The backplate also poses no problems installing in standard cases, making it safer and functional. Along with the armor and backplate, these mobos are put through the wringer when it comes to testing, refer to Asus' information for more details on that. TUF Rating gets 5 stars as well as compatibility.

Now one of the issues is the heat of the motherboard, with all that armor, it heats up a bit more. To compensate, Asus includes 2 mini fans that spin at 1000 rpm. Supposedly you can control their spin, but many report that you can't. I opted to not install them simply because I didn't want to fool with it. I feel that I shouldn't have felt that installing two fans would be a hassle. And if you can't control them, 1000rpm is too much and it's loud. So 3 stars on thermals

Available pinouts weren't hard to get to compared to other Asus boards like the Maximus VIII Hero, and there were plenty of them. M8H only had one USB pinout which was frustrating because I need 2. So this motherboard was much better in regards to plug connectors.

Aesthetically I liked it, but your mileage may vary.

Included bloatware- ..I mean software was good, I liked what it had to offer, but I like what the RoG boards offer more. So 4 stars.

Overall great board would buy again.
