Dual Blade Impeller

Minimizing vibration&Noise by Implementing Biomimetics

The housing leg structure of 4 x 2 absorbs the noise and vibration generated by the rotation of the impeller, providing a stable and quiet user environment.

Addressable RGB Sync (3-Pin)

RGB LEDs utilizing the straightness characteristic of LEDs are placed in the housing to realize a distinctive LED pattern.

FDB (Fluid Dynamic Bearing) Fan

FDB, which is higher than sleeve bearing, is a thin oil layer that minimizes friction caused by the rotation of the shaft to minimize noise and heat, providing quietness and 100,000 hours lifespan.

    Pretty Good, But...
Zalman bills this CPU cooler as the "worlds best", but this claim is exceedingly difficult to prove. For my system, I found it needs some help in two significant areas of their instruction sheet. But first, a bit about my application. This is a replacement for a liquid cooler with a pump that failed. The liquid cooler had 3 120mm fans which I had mounted in the front of my case pushing air in, and I had 3 140mm case fans exhausting air, for a total of 6 fans. This was all good, because, while my Ryzen 7 5800X CPU doesn't generate a huge amount of heat, sitting just below the CPU is a Geforce RTX 3080 ti video card which is like a little furnace inside the case. My Phanteks Eclipse P600S is a great case with plenty of room for the Zalman cooler, and many cooling options. So when I installed the Zalman CPU cooler, I went down from essentially 6 case fans to 3 case fans. I reinstalled two 140mm fans as intake fans in the front, and left the third one as exhaust in the rear of the case. The actual installation of the heatsink hardware was relatively easy, just following the instructions step-by-step until I got to the point of applying the supplied thermal compound. The instructions don't tell how much to apply or the preferred pattern, so I consulted some of the fine videos on the internet that exist on this topic. The only tricky part of assembly was starting the last two screws that mount the heatsink to the mounting brackets. For that I used a magnetized Philips screwdriver that was long enough to reach in between the two banks of fins, and that worked great. Here's where the challenges started. The fans that are supplied need to be assembled to a plastic mounting bracket, and then metal clips get assembled to the plastic mounting brackets. The key is to position the fan so that the wires which come off one corner of the fan end up in the right spot for a neat wiring installation, so the mounting bracket must be assembled to the fan accordingly. Then the fan assembly must be clipped to the heatsink fins. Unfortunately neither the fans nor the instructions indicate what direction the fan airflow goes. My case fans have molded arrows on the side showing the airflow direction. The plastic pins that the metal clips rotate on are pretty delicate, so airflow planning needs to be right from the start because unclipping and reclipping the fans entails a bit of risk of breaking the hinge pins. The other issue that I found was the instructions for the LED wiring are lacking. There are two options for connecting these wires to a motherboard, Gigabyte and non-Gigabyte. I have a Gigabyte motherboard, so I used the optional Gigabyte connector. Unfortunately the tag on this connector which has the pin designations didn't agree with the potential pin designations on any of my motherboard sockets. There was a 4 pin "CPU LED" socket on the motherboard, but the Zalman connector was only 3 pins. One of the pins on the motherboard connector was designated "12V", which in retrospect, is likely too high for the fan LED's. I tried it anyway, and probably caused damage to the fan LED's because I could smell something burning before I disconnected it. I'm not that concerned about the lighting anyway, but it would have been nice to have clearer guidance in the instructions. After assembling and checking everything, I started up the PC and ran some games to check what the CPU temp's would hit, and it maxed out at 85.6 degrees C, which is pretty high. I decided to reuse the 3 fans from my broken liquid cooler as front intake fans, and moved the case fans to the top of the case as exhaust fans. Then I reran my stress test with games, and topped out at a much improved 76.6 degrees C. This showed me that even the "worlds best CPU cooler" won't make up for inadequate case airflow. Most people won't be running a video card as thermally challenging as mine, so this Zalman cooler should have no problem controlling temp's in their environment, provided it is installed correctly and the case airflow is sufficient. The latest Intel processors tend to run hotter than the current AMD ones do, so that is something else to consider, since this cooler will mount on either brand CPU. Zalman does need to improve their instructions, especially in the areas of airflow direction and for the wiring for the LED lighting. They do have more information on this cooler on their web site, including an informative review video.
